This Is It Dad, Dying Son Told Father

This is it dad, were the last words

kidney patient Sanil Kumar spoke
minutes before he died at the Lautoka
Hospital.
Grieving father, Vinod Kumar told the
reporter that it was heartbreaking and
says the hospitals negligence and the
New Zealand Immigration had a hand
in his death.
He said his son, Sanil, who was
deported from New Zealand last month
while awaiting a kidney transplant
was diagnosed last year and needed
peritoneal dialysis.
Peritoneal dialysis was the treatment
he was getting since he was diagnosed
in New Zealand. Because he was sent
back forcefully, we had no option here
in Fiji but to resort to Haemodialysis
which was not the required treatment
needed for his illness, Kumar said.
If they had not deported him and
allowed him to get the dialysis in NZ
he would have survived.
Since he returned to the country late
last month, he had been receiving
haemodialysis at a surgery in Nadi.
And on Saturday, the doctor said he
had dengue symptoms.
That was according to the doctor so
he was admitted at the Ba Mission
Hospital for three days before we took
him to Lautoka Hospital, Kumar said.
I had told a doctor there that my son
was a kidney patient and his body can
only allow one litre of IV fluid in a drip
bag for 24 hours, however they gave
him three drip bags, two on his right
and one on his left.
After a while Kumar said he saw that

Continued On Page 3
his sons stomach and hands were
swollen and was not breathing well.
So I asked the nurse to take away the
drips.
Then another Chinese doctor came
in the morning asking to take blood
samples for blood test, she again
inserted the needles on his swollen
hand and my son just hugged me and
said this is it dad.
That was it for my son, Kumar said.
He said the doctors at Lautoka Hospital
have asked him to approve a post
mortem examination on his son.
I told them I cant allow that, my son
didnt die from suicide, he had kidney

failure and I had informed them about

it but they didnt listen. The doctor
told me he knew what he was doing,
Kumar lamented.
Ministry of Health spokesperson,
Sunil Chandra said that the Medical
Superintendent in Lautoka was still
drafting a report that they would
release soon.
New Zealand MP stands by call to send
kidney transplant deportee home
Associate
Immigration
Minister
Nikki Kaye says she was advised that
treatment was available in Fiji for a
man deported from New Zealand while
waiting for a kidney transplant.

Family members told Labour MP

Rajen Prasad that Sanil Kumar died
in hospital in Fiji after developing an
infection a week ago.
Ms Kaye said she was saddened to hear
of Mr Kumar's death, and extended her
condolences to family and friends.
Mr Kumar was sent home from New
Zealand on April 24 after his work
visa was not renewed, and Ms Kaye
declined to intervene in the case.
She said she was advised by the
Ministry of Health that appropriate
dialysis treatment was available in Fiji.

This Is It Dad, Dying Son Told

Father
Continued From Page 1
"I am limited in what I can say further
publicly on Mr Kumar's case, as Mr
Kumar declined to give me a privacy
waiver to discuss the specific details of
his case.
"I have previously confirmed that I
wrote to Dr Prasad earlier this year to
confirm some material facts including
information about the availability of
dialysis treatment in Fiji, and the actual
costs to the taxpayer of all treatment
for Mr Kumar."
Ms Kaye said immigration decisions
involving health conditions were
complex and involved consideration of
a range of factors.
"That's why I give careful and thorough
consideration to a range of factors and
often seek additional advice as I did
from health agencies in this instance."
Mr Kumar's family had raised about
$122,000 of the $130,000 needed for
a transplant, and a cousin was being
tested as a possible match, Dr Prasad
said.
Transplant operations cannot be done
in Fiji.
Dr Prasad said Ms Kaye had written to
David Cunliffe to respond to queries
about the case. Her letter said she had
been advised that dialysis was available in
Fiji, and that patients could transfer from
peritoneal dialysis, which Mr Kumar had
been receiving, to haemodialysis, which
was available in Fiji.
The letter also pointed out that Mr
Kumar had an outstanding debt to the
district health board of $36,000.
Mr Prasad said family members had
made arrangements to pay off that debt.
He said the Health Ministry's advice
to Ms Kaye, which was included in
her letter to Mr Cunliffe, was that
Fiji would only fund three months of

dialysis treatment.
Cunliffe says the fact that Sanil was
in the country unlawfully made it a
"difficult case".
He said there was a long-standing
policy under previous government
that people who were in grave danger
of losing their lives as a result of
deportation would not be deported.
He said he extended his "huge
sympathies" to Kumar's family, and
he wanted to acknowledge the work
of his Labour MP Rajen Prasad who
advocated for Kumar and his family
throughout his deportation process.
"I acknowledge too the difficult
position that any minister is in, in
these circumstances, but the fact is
the decision in the end wasn't the right
one."
After that time, patients needed to pay
the $32,000 annual cost, find a donor
and travel to India for a transplant, or
"get their affairs in order to prepare for
their death".
Dr Prasad said New Zealand Immigration
had been "utterly heartless".
"What was the harm here? I just don't
get it. It's just so unnecessary."
Prime Minister John Key said that
he was constrained in comments
because of privacy, but that Ms Kaye
had established that treatment was
available in Fiji.
"I'm sure they would be of the view
that the potential level of health care
was greater for him in New Zealand.
Whether that is right or not is not
something I can confirm."
Attending the funeral gathering were
his families in NZ who were part of the
community that raised funds to allow
Kumar to get kidney transplant in NZ
before he was deported.
Sanil Kumar was cremated at the
Rarawai Cemetery on Wednesday.

Workshop For Filmmakers

A workshop organised by Film Fiji
for budding filmmakers including
high school students began at the Fiji
National University's Raiwai Campus.
The workshop to be held in Suva, Nadi
and in Labasa will be conducted by
New Zealanders Patrick Gillies and
James Wilkinson both of Southern
Institute of Technology who have vast
experience in filmmaking.
They will teach students how to script
and produce short films.
Film Fiji Acting chief executive Florence
Swamy said students would be taught
the basics of filmmaking including
conceptualising, scripting and filmmaking.
Film Fiji is very pleased to be able

to make this high level of training

available to the students participating
in the competition.
It is a unique opportunity for our
young and aspiring filmmakers to
obtain hands-on training from highly
qualified instructors and industry
professionals, Swamy said.
This workshop should allow this years
participating schools to be different
in telling their own stories at the Kula
Film Awards later in the year.
Gilles said they were excited to be able
to help the Fijian students tell their own
stories instead of trying to make short
films based on what they learn from the
American way of filmmaking.

Students Charged For Lying To

Police
Two university students of Labasa
who parted away $1400 cash and over
$6000 worth of jewellery and later
tried to make it look like it was stolen
in a break-in have been charged by
police.
The girl, 19, and her boyfriend, 20, are
charged with giving false information
to police.
Police report say on May 18, the girl's

mother left for Suva leaving her alone

at home.
She then called her boyfriend over and
two other friends, and spent the money
on alcohol and food.
After the partying, they decided to trash
the house to make it look like a breakin and reported the matter to police.
Upon investigation, police found out
that no break-in took place.

Man Accused Of Blackmail

Granted Bail

A 28-year-old businessman of Sabeto in

Nadi who is charged with three counts
of Trafficking Obscene Publications,
Criminal Intimidation and Attempting
to Obtain a Financial Advantage has
been granted bail with a sum of $500
with two sureties.
Kritesh Kumar is alleged to have
obtained nude pictures and videos of a
woman and threatened to post them to
her immediate family members through

a fake Facebook account.

He wanted $4,000 from the woman.
Divisional Police Prosecuting Officer,
Mohammed Yunnus said Kumar has
been issued with strict bail conditions,
that is to report to the Nadi Police
Station every Wednesday and Saturday
from 8am to 6pm and a stop departure
notice has been issued to him too.
He had to surrender his travel
documents in Court.

From A Beggar To A Vendor

Sushila Wati. 67, was the happiest
person when Suva Market Community
Post officers and the Wheelbarrow
Boys Association helped secure her a
place at the Suva market.
Ms Wati has been begging for a living
for over 20 years in Suva since her
husbands death.
I did not have anyones support and
I had four children to look after, Ms
Wati said.
Since then I had spent my life on the
streets everyday from the morning and
only going home when I know I have
earned enough to put food on the table.
She said she had been receiving social
welfare assistance for six years now
but that was not sufficient.

She had been praying for a better life

away from begging on the streets and
living a decent life, she said and finally
her prayers were answered.
The wheelbarrow boys association
bought two crates of pawpaws, one
bag of eggplants and half a bag of okra
for her from a middleman which she
would sell.
Corporal Akimo Gu, of the Market
Community Post, said they were
working with the Department of Social
Welfare to identify people on the streets
and help them find work.
We are thankful for the market master
for giving her a space in the market so
she can sell fruits and vegetables from
and earn a decent income, he said.

Fiji's High Commission in Malaysia

has confirmed that all Fijians in
Thailand are safe despite the military
takeover.
The high commission says it is also
ready to assist any Fijian living in
Thailand should they require help.
Fiji High Commissioner to Malaysia,
Ratu Meli Bainimarama, says there are
six Fijians in Thailand.
He also assures all those whose families
members and relatives are currently in
Bangkok that there was no need to be
alarmed.
"According to our records here in
Malaysia, we have six Fijians in
Thailand and all, with one exception,
are working people," said Ratu Meli.
"The exception is a housewife. She

has been in Thailand for over 10 years,

knows the language and speaks Thai. "
"As far as we are aware all Fijians in
Bangkok are safe," he said from Kuala
Lumpur.
Except one who lives outside Bangkok,
Ratu Meli said the evacuation of the
rest would be handled by the United
Nations as they are employed by, or
spouses of employees of, ESCAP.
"The exception lives and works outside
Bangkok, so he will not be affected by
the disturbances in Bangkok," he said.
"If however, any should require our
assistance, we will liaise with our
Honorary Consul General in Bangkok
to do the needful."
Fiji's Embassy in Malaysia is accredited
to Thailand.

$7.4M In Unidentified Funds:

FNPF

Fiji's National Provident Funds has

$7.4million in unclaimed contribution
because names do not match those in
their records.
Fund's chief executive Aisake Taito
said they have not been able to identify
who the funds belong to because
of mismatches in employee details
provided by employers and member
records.
These funds have been placed in
FNPF's suspense account and will
remain in the account till the fund has
been able to identify the owners.
These funds are currently in
FNPFs suspense account, created
for contributions paid by employers
for their employees, but remain
unidentified for reasons as the name or
FNPF numbers provided do not match

register with FNPF during their period
of employment," Taito said.

Plans To Rebrand Rewa Rice

Whilst every effort is undertaken to

reduce this problem, it can only be
resolved through the collective effort
of all stakeholders i.e. members,
employers and the Fund.
Taito said situations like these can be
avoided if employers ensure that all
new employees are registered with
FNPF a week after the commencement 4
of their employment.
Employers who do not register their
employees are liable to pay a fine of 4
$5000.

The company is also looking at the

be in addition to the one in Dreketi at
present.
Looking at the Ministry of Agriculture
forecast for rice production, it is
expected to be located in Labasa, Mr
Pratap said.
The forecast for Rice production in
coming years is more in Labasa than
in Dreketi. At the same time we will
continue to operate the old mill in

There are also plans to have small

Nasinu Secondary School this year
amounts to $570,000 and this facilitates
the refurbishment of two hostels, the
dining hall and the dispensary. The new
gymnasium is a school-funded project.
The Ministry of Education deputy
secretary (professional) Kelera Taloga
was at the school as chief guest to
officially opening the new hostel and
the new gymnasium.
Mrs Taloga said this upgrade was
a strategy used by the ministry to
ensure education was made accessible,
affordable and equitable for every
Fijian student.
The recent renovated hostel, dining
facilities, dispensary and now the
gymnasium are indicators that the
school is fulfilling its expected role

as the provider of a well-rounded

education, said the deputy secretary.
Let these facilities be places of
enhancing academic excellence and
make it your home a multiracial home

where you cultivate tolerance, where
you promote goodwill and where you
learn to live together as one people.
School head girl Marie Fall applauded
the Government for its timely
assistance to the school.
There are hardly any words to
express how much we appreciate what
you have done for our school this year.
This will empower the students in their
learning here at Nasinu Secondary
School, Ms Fall said.
We are indebted to the Government
for blessing the school with so much.
The refurbished works on the dining
hall and dispensary is ongoing and will

Australian Man Dies While
Snorkeling At Resort
Fishermen have found the body of a
36-year-old Australian man who died
while snorkeling alone off Fiji's coast.
The man's death has been confirmed by
Peter Hopgood, general manager of the
exclusive Outrigger On The Lagoon
resort.
He said the man had been a guest who
had checked into the resort with a
female friend for just one night.
Police, resort staff and local fishermen
launched a search for the man when he
was reported missing before 8:00pm
on Saturday.
"The person in question was snorkeling
late in the evening and did not return
to his accommodation," Mr Hopgood
said.
The search resumed at first light
on Sunday when locals from a
neighbouring village found the man's
body on a coral reef, about one
kilometre south of the resort and just
offshore.
The body has been taken to a morgue at
nearby Sigatoka for an autopsy.
The Department of Foreign Affairs

and Trade (DFAT) and the Australian

embassy have been informed.
"The department is aware of the death
of a 36-year-old Australian man in
Fiji," a DFAT spokesman said.
Mr Hopgood has released a letter to the
other guests at the five-star resort.
"The resort has made the necessary
arrangements with local authorities
and the Australian embassy to return
the body to Australia," it said.
"The resort's family passes on our
deepest condolences to the friends and
family of the deceased.
"We request that guests refrain from
entering the ocean after dark."
It is believed the man was originally
from Perth but was living and working
in Melbourne.
The
Outrigger,
popular
with
Australians, is on the west coast of the
main island of Viti Levu, 80 kilometres
from Nadi.
Ten days ago Sydney father-of-three
Mark Hardaker, 40, was killed in a
collision between two boats while
holidaying with his family in Fiji.

Fiji's National Federation Party

promises to create decent employment
to address the increasing unemployment
rate if elected into government.
Party leader Professor Biman Prasa
said the party has the political will and
idea to create decent employment for
youths, therefore addressing poverty
and inequality among families.
Youth unemployment is the biggest
scourge in our society. We understand
the pain of youths and their parents
when they cannot find employment,"
Prasad said.
He said whilst the party is supportive
of the establishment of a National
Employment Centre and the work
it has done, the NFP will extend the
NEC's role to not only help people find
employment but also provide a modest
means tested unemployment benefit
for six months.
This would help unemployed youth
to look for employment and manage

their affairs while they look for jobs,"

Prasad said.
But quality jobs have to be created
by industry. The NFP will work
with business houses to establish
new internship programs for young
people to acquire skills and work
experience."
The NFP he says will also work with
targeted industries including the
tourism sector to increase technical,
professional and skilled jobs across the
country.
The NFP will work with foreign
investors in targeted growth sectors
to boost employment for our young
especially in the North, in maritime
regions and in depressed areas
especially.
We make a clear commitment to our
young we will create decent work
for you. Our investments in education
and our future will not be allowed to be
criminally wasted any longer.

Government Eyes Quality Diplomats

The Fijian government is molding civil

servants to be quality diplomats in an
effort to place Fiji on a better economic
position internationally.
This has been made possible through
the Public Service Commission
training of would-be diplomats to
engage in global trading by increasing
private sector participation, enhancing
bilateral and multilateral relations,
improve investments, trade facilitation
and negotiations and advocating Fijis
interest in regional and international
arena.
Since its inception in 2011, about 150
officers in the public service have been
trained expanding to civil servants from
around the region and more recently
participants from Fijis private sector.
The seventh diplomat induction
training will be held in June where 50
officers have shown interest.
Ambassador to Japan, Mr Isikeli
Mataitoga who is the principal
presenter of the course, said the course
has grown in reputation and was now
considered one of the premier courses
offered by the PSC each year.
It provides a training platform for

diplomats from the Small Pacific Island

Countries and this year we are offering
places to Pacific Island Development
Forum (PIDF) member states as part
of assistance to them, Ambassador
Mataitoga said.
There is interest from Australia and
New Zealand to learn about the course
and possible training cooperation.
Ambassador Mataitoga added the
course was developed to meet skills
and knowledge gaps found prevalent in
young diplomats arriving at missions
with a good general degree or specialist
degree in various academic disciplines
but little to no skills as diplomat or
having basic knowledge on how foreign
policy of Fiji was determined and how
to develop strategic framework.
Diplomats must effectively influence
the current global and regional issues
to achieve Fijis foreign policy and
advocate Fijis views. We must always
remember that in diplomacy there are
no permanent friends, only permanent
interests.
The training has also accepted
participants from Kiribati, Tuvalu,
FSM, Vanuatu, Nauru and Republic of

Marshall Islands.
PSC Permanent Secretary, Parmesh
Chand said it is important to strengthen
Fijis presence on the international
stage.
The training ensures all officers
recommended for overseas missions
possess core competencies for the job
and allow for a ready pool of officers
available for overseas posting at any
point in time, Chand said.

Less than half of the eligible Fijian on Wednesday, May 14 and ended on
voter population in Papua New
Guinea registered in the recent voter
registration drive in the Pacific Island
country last week.
Out of the 289 eligible voters - of 229
in Port Moresby and 60 in Lae - only
136 people were registered in PNG - of
103 in Port Moresby and 33 in Lae.
Two officials from the Fiji Elections
Office were in PNG to carry out the
five-day-long registration drive in
Port Moresby and Lae which started

Monday, May 19.

The registration teams could not
venture out of these two centres due
to cost implications, but the Fiji High
Commission office in PNG assisted in
efforts by providing transportation to
those who required assistance to the
registration venues as part of efforts to
register as many Fijians as possible.
Fijians living outside of these two centers
were also notified to make way to the
designated centers to be able to register.

President Lauds Fijian Sacrifice

And Duty To Peacekeeping
Missions

Peacekeeping work carried out by

Fijian troops serving in the Sinai region
has been praised by His Excellency the
President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
As the Fijian Head of State rounded
up his tour visiting troops serving in
various peacekeeping missions in the
Middle East, he thanked them for their
service and for upholding Fiji's historic
commitment to peacekeeping missions.
He pointed out that every Fijian was
proud of the sacrifices made by each
peacekeeping troop serving around the
world.
As he as departing, the President
reminded the troops that he brought
with him the well wishes of every
Fijian, including their families. He also

highlighted the importance of their role

in maintaining peace and security in
the region.
Ratu Epeli was accorded a guard of
honor by members of the 2nd Battalion
Fiji Infantry Regiment at the Al Gora
camp airfield as he completed the tour.
More than 330 Fijian troops serve in the
Sinai region under the Multinational
Force of Observers, commonly known
as the MFO. Fiji has been serving in
this region since the 1980s and is the
third largest troop-contributing nation
from the 13 countries that serve under
MFO Sinai mission.
The President will schedule a separate
trip to visit troops serving in other
volatile regions across the world.

FEO Briefs Health Officials

The Fijian Elections Office has briefed
senior managers of the Ministry of
Health as they continue with their voter
education awareness programme.
Director
communications,
Josua
Tuwere, briefed officials on progress
made towards the September elections.
Health officials are certainly an
important part of the eligible voting
population and our ongoing education
programmes at the Fijian Elections
Office will continue to target them and

indeed all groups in Fiji and abroad,

Tuwere said.
We deployed voter registration teams
to the US, New Zealand and Papua New
and also one in Nabouwalu last week.
We expect to increase the number of
civic educators on the ground in Fiji to
help educate our voters in the next few
days," he said.
Tuwere also briefed officials on the
recruitment drive currently underway
for 14,000 polling day workers.

EVR In Middle East

Voter registration began for Fijian

citizens living in the Middle East.
The week-long registration drive
started in Abu Dhabi before it moved
to other centres in the United Arab
Emirates and other parts of the Middle
East.
To facilitate the exercise, the Fijian
Elections Office has deployed two
teams to the Middle East.
In Dubai they will be based at the
Fiji Embassy at the Eitad towers. On
Wednesday and Thursday they will be
based at the Al Murooj Rotana Hotel.
Team One will later move to Al Ain on
Friday and Saturday where they will be
based at the City Seasons Hotel.
On Sunday they will travel to Oman to

continue with the registration work.

Team two will start work tomorrow in
Qatar, Kuwait and Lebanon. They are
scheduled to finish from Lebanon on
June 2.
So far there are 550,262 voters
registered with 113 days left to the
September 17 elections.
In order to register, Fijians must produce
a valid Fijian Passport and at least be
18 years of age. For amendments and
alterations to existing registrations, the
current EVR card must be produced.
Times of registration at the different
centres can be viewed on the FEO
website: http://www.electionsfiji.gov.

Govt Spends Over $1B In Improving

Health Services In Last 7 Years

The government has spent over one billion

dollars in improving health services for
Fijians in the last seven years.
According to Health Ministry statistics
obtained by the reporter, they now have
new equipment like MRI machines,
CT scanners and cardiac labs.
The Pacific Eye Institute was
opened in 2011 while a new suite for
chemotherapy at CWM Hospital was
completed three years ago.
This year sees the renovation of 10
operating theatres at CWM Hospital
while a new Accident and Emergency
Department was completed for
Savusavu Hospital three years ago.
The ministry also confirmed that
in 2010, they outfitted all 19 subdivisional hospitals with ultrasound
equipment and x-ray machines.
Since 2011, six health centres in the
Central Division now have extended
opening hours for Lami, Samabula,
Valelevu, Raiwaqa, Tamavua and
Makoi.
The Health Ministry statistics and data
also show that a number of projects
have been undertaken relating to the
construction of health centres, hospitals
and quarters over the past years.
These include the Labasa Hospital
extension in 2009, the new Nasea
Health Centre in Labasa, and a number
of nursing stations and quarters in
different parts of the country.
It has also been confirmed that cabinet

approved the creation of 56 posts for

doctors in 2011 and the Fiji National
University introduced the degree
course in public health nursing.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Health said
it is also trying to reduce the waiting
time of patients by increasing the
number of doctors and nurses in every
hospital and health center.
Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor
Eloni Tora said the long waiting time
which is a problem faced by all health
services in the world is being addressed
in a number of ways.
He said some of these ways are
increasing the Ministrys establishment
of doctors by around 400 from 2010 to
2016, increasing the Ministrys nursing
establishment by 1,510 new posts
from 2010 to 2018 and increasing
accessibility to services which includes
bringing in new services which were
not previously available in Fiji.
Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama
also revealed last week that major
reforms and basic upgrade to medical
facilities and services will be carried
out in the next few months.
He said this reform is also a result of
his office closely monitoring the public
medical service delivery.
The Prime Minister said public medical
service delivery does not only relate to
the ratio of doctors to patients but the
attitude of medical staff towards their
clients who are both out and inpatients.

Trade Between Fiji And India Set

To Rise

The Attorney-General and Minister

for Industry and Trade, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, congratulated the Bharitya
Janta Party (BJP) on its overwhelming
victory in Indias recent general
election during a meeting in Delhi with
BJP executives and Party Co-convener,
Vijay Jolly.
The Minister emphasized to Mr.
Jolly and his colleagues the need to
further strengthen the two nations
long standing relations. India is a
super power and a fast developing
nation that is under-represented in the
Pacific region in terms of trade and
investment, said the Minister.
The Minister explained that the close
ties between Fiji and India have not
yet translated into real benefits for
either country in terms of trade and
investment, but said that he expected
that to change after the two countries
signed a Double Taxation Avoidance
(DTA) Agreement and launched an
Indo-Fiji Business Association in
January this year.
In the past, there was little motivation
for the business communities in Fiji
and India to get together to explore
new opportunities. Now, the DTA

and Business Association are playing

an important role in furthering
trade, investment and businesses
opportunities; however, there is still
need for political will, said the
Attorney-General.
The Minister said that the Bainimarama
Government has the political will to put
the appropriate measures in place to
encourage both business communities
to take full advantage of the new
incentives and to ensure that they are
mutually beneficial for the ordinary
citizens of both countries.
Mr. Jolly welcomed the Fijian
delegation and conveyed Prime
Minister Narendra Modi's wishes to
work with the Fijian Government to
strengthen existing ties, including the
development of trade and business
between the two nations.
The Minister, on behalf of the Fijian
Prime Minister, reiterated Fiji's
congratulations and well wishes to the
new Indian Prime Minister.
During the meeting, the Minister also
updated the BJP representatives on
the preparations being made for Fijis
forthcoming election, which will be
held in September this year.

"What they are learning are the same
things the Miss World entrants are

learning in the 136 countries they will

be coming from to compete.
"While we are preparing them for the
Miss World Fiji competition, we are
also preparing the one to be crowned
to challenge for the Miss World title,"
Mr Blake said.
The winner will compete at the Miss
World pageant in December.

Fiji One Of The Worst Places To

Work: Index

Fiji has been rated as one of the worst

places to work in based on the latest Global
Rights Index released by the International
Trades Union Conference (ITUC).
On a scale of 1-5 with 1 being best and
5+ being worst., Fiji scored 36+ out of
43, scaled to a rating of five with no
guarantee of rights.
But Minister of Labour Jone Usamate
has rubbished the report as the work of
those who had an "agenda against the
government".
According to the index, countries with
a scale of five may have legislation that
spell our certain rights for workers, but
workers have effectively no access to
these rights, "and therefore exposed to
autocratic regimes and unfair labour
practices."
Other countries scoring a rating of five
include Algeria, Bangladesh, Belarus,
Cambodia, China, Colombia, Cote
d'ivoire, Egypt, Greece, Guatemala,
India, Laos, Malaysia, Nigeria,
Philippines, Qatar, Republic of Korea,
Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, Turkey,
UAE, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The index measures each country
against 97 indicators such as a right to
strike, freedom of association, severity,
and murder or disappearance.
A rating of 5+ indicated places where
workers have "no guarantee of rights

due to breakdown of the rule of law."

Eight countries scored a rating of more
than five including Central African
Republic, Libya, Palestine, Somalia,
South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine.
That rating is absolute rubbish and
reflects the distorted views of those
who have an agenda to pursue," said
Usamate.
The attention that government pays
to the workers of this country is
apparent in the rights provided by the
constitution, our labour laws, our OHS
policies, our provision of workers
compensation, our sectoral minimum
wages, the national minimum wages,
the provision of free mediation
services to resolve conflicts - all this is
an indication of how we look after the
interest of workers, Usamate said.
He stated that government has taken
a special attention to also take care of
non-unionised workers. These are the
most marginalised workers as seen on
the National Minimum Wage.
Government has also paid attention to
the needs of our less well off workers
through a range of social wage
programs such as tuition free primary
and secondary education, the toppers
scheme, the TELS, free bus fares,
development of telecentres, to name
just a few, he said.

Australian Surfer Nikki Van Dijk Bloodied After Epic Wipeout At

Fijis Notorious Cloudbreak

Van Dijk was competing in her

opening-round heat at the Fiji Women's
Pro world tour event when she wiped
out in one and a half meter waves on
the reef break.
The 19-year-old Victorian was raced
back to shore on a jetski with blood
streaming from her mouth.
A tour doctor on Tavarua Island stitched
up her cuts and cleared van Dijk of
any serious injury but she was forced
to withdraw from the competition,
handing fellow Australian Laura
Enever a walkover into the third round.
(Nikki) is in good spirits, even
wanting to surf her round two heat,
but ultimately decided that she is
unable to return to competition in Fiji,
Association of Surfing Professionals
deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer
said.
We wish her a speedy recovery. Van
Dijk's wipeout was a low point on an
otherwise solid opening day for the
Australian brigade in Fiji.
Five-time world champion Stephanie
Gilmore overcame her disappointing
second round exit in Brazil with a
victory in her first round heat.
Gilmore scored 13.33 out of 20 to pip
France's Johanne Defay by a single
point and advance to a third-round
match up with South Africa's Bianca
Buitendag and American Tatiana
Weston-Webb.

AUSTRALIAN surfer Nikki van Dijk has been left bloodied, bruised and
sporting stitches after a brutal wipeout at Fiji's Cloudbreak.
Gilmore said it was going to be a tough time in eight years.
competition with the women's tour It's such a different playing field for

said.
A few of us have been here before on
free surf trips and we've been warming

World No. 2 Sally Fitzgibbons, coming
off her event win in Brazil, was also a
first round winner.
The NSW surfer scored 12.27 to beat
Weston-Webb and France's Pauline
Ado and will now meet Enever and
New Zealand's Paige Hareb in the third

Impressive Sunshine Coast rookie
Dimity Stoyle was also a first-round
victor, forcing fellow Aussie Tyler
Wright into a second-round suddendeath heat.
Stoyle will meet world champion Carissa
Moore and American Alessa Quizon in
the third round while Wright, who won
her second-round match-up, will face
Defay and American Malia Manuel.

Fiji's Frank Bainimarama Appears To Have Widespread Support

Ahead Of Elections

In just under four months, Fijians will

head to the polls in the countrys first
democratic election since the 2006
military coup.
The then military commander,
now interim Prime Minister, Frank
Bainimarama has been in power for
nearly eight years.
His government has ruled by decree;
it scrapped the constitution, replaced
the judiciary and muzzled dissent from
groups like the Methodist Church and
the Great Council of Chiefs.
Despite these actions, there appears
to be widespread support for Rear
Admiral Bainimarama (formerly
Commodore), his policies and Fiji
First, his new political party.
Many are predicting Fiji First will win
the September election and Admiral
Bainimarama will continue on as
Prime Minister.
In the main market in the capital Suva,
many of the stallholders say they will
vote for Fiji First.
They say crime has decreased in recent
years and they feel much safer going
about their business.
"The laws theyre making are tightening
things up," said one stallholder.
"Before, in Fiji anyone can assault you.
Now, if you assault anybody youll be
arrested."
Suvas sprawling squatter settlements
are strongholds of Bainimarama
support.
Despite the poverty, policies like free
education, free public transport for
children and price controls on staple
foods are popular.
"Here we have people like low income
earners and were really seeing the
benefit of what the governments been
doing," said one resident, Peniasi

Ranawai.
Popularity outside Suva
Admiral Bainimarama is also popular
outside the main cities, in villages
where power and water supplies have
been connected for the first time.
His government is investing heavily in
new infrastructure, especially roads,
financed through increased government
debt.
However, there are those who fear the
election will not be free and fair.
"Its not an equal playing field for all
parties," says Reverend Akuila Yabaki
from the Citizens Constitutional
Forum.
"The party that has not been registered
is Bainimaramas party but already
theyre doing money politics."
Reverend Yabaki believes the

Fiji First has been registered as a
political party.
Hes concerned that several decrees
and a timid media have created
an atmosphere favourable to the
government.
Nevertheless, Reverend Yabaki says
the election is an important step on the
road back to democracy.
"Weve had our share of constitutional
breakdowns, say in 1987 when the first
coup took place.
"So we should look back into history
and also look forward with a vision to
make Fiji a better place," he said.
But some deny Admiral Bainimarama
has been campaigning.

fair and denies Admiral Bainimarama
has breached rules governing political
campaigning.
"From what I hear he has not been
campaigning. Hes merely trying to get
the signatures of the people and also
answering questions by the people,"
she said.
If Fiji First does form the next
government, Dr Luveni does not think
it will be difficult for the party to
transition from a military dictatorship
to a parliamentary democracy.
"Although we have so many decrees,
these decrees, before it goes to cabinet,
it goes through a consultation process
- so all the stakeholders would have
been consulted first," she said.
Opponents silent
On the streets of Suva, it is easy to find
people who are prepared to publicly
back Commodore Bainimarama and

his government.
Getting people who are opposed to the
government to speak openly is another
matter and many are afraid of being
threatened by the police or military.
So its difficult to accurately
gauge Commodore Bainimaramas
popularity.
On the surface, it looks like his grip on
political power will continue, but many
Fijians are holding their tongues until
polling day.
Liam Fox recently travelled to Fiji
to gauge the political mood ahead of
the September general election, the
countrys first since a military coup in
2006.
He found that while military strongman
Frank Bainimarama has been heavily
criticised by foreign observers, he
appears to enjoy strong domestic
support.

areas such as Valelevu and Keiyasi
will be renovated through a funding
of $1millon while a further $2m will

and Lautoka Hospitals emergency
department will be upgraded with a
funding of $5.9m.
A further allocation of $1.0 million
has been given for the extension of the
Sigatoka hospital.
Rural health centers are also in line for

Their permanent secretary Savenaca
Kaunisela made this comment during
the launch of the ministry's corporate
uniform in Suva on Monday, stressing
that wearing the new uniform was one
thing but performing to the best of their
ability was another.
"We must continue to work together

said.
"I must say our concerted effort is

FEO To Consider Party Symbol

Request

The Fijian Elections office (FEO) is

considering the request from political
parties to include party symbols on the
ballot papers.
Electoral Commission chairman Chen
Bunn Young confirmed that they have
heard the requests from parties and
they were considering these requests,
though at this stage they cannot
confirm whether or not these symbols
will be included.
Were considering it and were not
sure how its going to fit in but at this

stage its really too early for us to say

definitively that we will exclude it or
include it.
But we have heard them and its
something that were considering both
the Supervisor of Elections and the
Electoral Commission, Young said.
The sample ballot papers do not have
party symbols but numbers alone.
Political parties have been trying to
convince the FEO to include party
symbols as well to avoid confusion of
voters.

I Will Stand - Mahendra

Chaudhry
Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra
Chaudhry is adamant that he will
remain leader of the party and take it
to the September 17 general election.
This is despite his recent conviction
which automatically rules him out of
the contest.
His lawyer, AnandSingh had told
Radio Australia on May 2 that as the
conviction stands, he is not in a position
to fight the elections now.
He wont be able to file his
nominations.
But Mr Chaudhry said: Ill carry on
and I will also be filing my nomination
for election irrespective of what the
decree says.
This decree has been designed to keep
me out everyone knows that and I
will fight this decree.
He said he will not be giving up easily
without a fight.
There was no provision in the 1998
and 1992 Electoral Act there was no

such provision.
Under section 56(2)(g) of the 2013
Constitution Mr Chaudhry does not
qualify to stand.
It states A person may be a candidate
for election to Parliament only if the
person has not, at any time during
the eight years immediately before
being nominated, been convicted of
any offence under any law for which
the maximum penalty is a term of
imprisonment of 12 months or more.
Letter to the Electoral Commission
Some concerns raised by Mr Chaudhry
-Alleged lack of independence of the
Electoral Commission.
-The absence of party symbols on the
ballot paper especially when the
party symbol was a requirement for
political party registration.
-One day election is not seen as
practicable even with the pre-polling
that will be held two weeks before. It
should be spread over three to four days.

Nurses Urge To Increase

Retirement Age

Fiji Nursing Association recommends

increasing it to 65 years to cover
increasing demands
The Fiji Nursing Association has
recommended that the retirement
age be increased from 55 to 65 years
because of the increase in demand for
health care professionals.
This is after the Prime Minister Rear
Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama
had outlined that health services would
need to undergo improvements.
He said this included the attitude of
medical staff, the state of medical
facilities and capital works.
It also includes the level of
compassion, empathy and sensitivity
shown by our medical staff, Mr
Bainimarama said.
Association general secretary Salanieta
Matiavi said nurses retired at 55 with
the majority of them holding senior

clinical, educator and leadership roles.

If we adopt a nurse-friendly
environment to retain their aging
staff, nurses will be able to remain in
the physically demanding profession
longer, Ms Matiavi said.
She said hospitals could not fill all of
their vacancies with new graduates;
they needed experienced nurses to
mentor them.
Ms Matiavi said this would very much
impact the system, if they had a large
number of nurses retiring at the same time.
There are nurses who wish to continue
because of their love for nursing and
some depend on their jobs to support
their families.
She said the biggest challenge now was
making sure the nursing graduates were
competent and could think broadly to
meet the growing health demands of
society.

Pregnant Woman Stoned To

Death By Her Family
A pregnant woman has been stoned to
death by her own family in front of a
Pakistani high court for marrying the
man she loved.
Nearly 20 members of the woman's
family, including her father and
brothers, attacked her and her husband
with batons and bricks in broad
daylight before a crowd of onlookers
in front of the high court of Lahore,
police investigator Rana Mujahid said.
Hundreds of women are murdered
every year in Muslim-majority
Pakistan in so-called "honour killings"
carried out by husbands or relatives as
a punishment for alleged adultery or
other illicit sexual behavior, but public
stoning is extremely rare.
Mujahid said the woman's father has
been arrested for murder and that
police were working to apprehend all
those who participated in the "heinous
crime."
Another police officer, Naseem Butt,
identified the slain woman as Farzana
Parveen, 25, and said she had married
Mohammad Iqbal against her family's
wishes after being engaged to him for
years.
Her father, Mohammad Azeem, had
filed an abduction case against Iqbal,
which the couple was contesting,
her lawyer Mustafa Kharal said. He
confirmed that she was three months'
pregnant.
Arranged marriages are the norm
among
conservative
Pakistanis,
who view marriage for love as a
transgression.
The Human Rights Commission of
Pakistan, a private group, said in a
report last month that some 869 women
were murdered in honor killings in
2013.
But even Pakistanis who have tracked
violence against women expressed
shock at the brutal and public nature of
the slaying.
"I have not heard of any such case in

which a woman was stoned to death,

and the most shameful and worrying
thing is that this woman was killed
in front of a court," said Zia Awan, a
prominent lawyer and human rights
activist.
He said Pakistanis who commit
violence against women are often
acquitted or handed light sentences
because of poor police work and faulty
prosecutions.
"Either the family does not pursue
such cases or police don't properly
investigate. As a result, the courts either
award light sentences to the attackers,
or they are acquitted," he said.
Parveen's relatives had waited outside
the court, which is located on a main
downtown thoroughfare. As the couple
walked up to the main gate, the family
members fired shots in the air and tried
to snatch her from Iqbal, her lawyer
said.
When she resisted, her father, brothers
and other relatives started beating her,
eventually pelting her with bricks from
a nearby construction site, Iqbal said.
Iqbal, 45, said he started seeing
Parveen after the death of his first wife,
with whom he had five children.
"We were in love," he told The
Associated Press. He alleged that
the woman's family wanted to fleece
money from him before marrying her
off.
"I simply took her to court and
registered a marriage," infuriating the
family, he said.
Parveen's father surrendered after
the incident and called the murder an
"honour killing," Butt said.
"I killed my daughter as she had
insulted all of our family by marrying
a man without our consent, and I have
no regret over it," Mujahid, the police
investigator, quoted the father as saying.
Mujahid said the woman's body had
been handed over to her husband for
burial.

After Conviction, Ray Nagin Must

Forfeit $500K

A federal judge says former New

Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin will have

to pay the government more than

$501,000 as a result of his conviction
on bribery and other charges.
U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan
issued the forfeiture order Tuesday.
Nagin was convicted in February on 20
counts including bribery, fraud, money
laundering and conspiracy during his
two terms as mayor. He served from
2002 to 2010.
Prosecutors say Nagin received more
than $501,000 in money, goods and
services from businessmen in exchange
for lucrative city work. Nagin's attorney
says the amount should be less because
Nagin shared liability with others.
Nagin is set to be sentenced June 11,
but he is seeking a delay. The charges
carry maximum sentences ranging
from three to 20 years.

Bus Strike Hits Brazil World Cup

Last month, Salvador saw a strike by

him after receiving an email minutes

They raced to Isla Vista but heard radio
reports on the shootings as they drove,
friend Simon Astaire told US media.
Elliot Rodger, 22, warned of his
intentions in his emailed manifesto and
a YouTube video posted the day before.
Hundreds gathered at a memorial
service in the college town to mourn
the dead.
Three more of the victims were named
on Sunday night - Cheng Yuan Hong,
20, George Chen, 19, and Weihan
Wang, 20, were stabbed in Rodger's
apartment.
They were his first victims before he
killed three more and wounded 13
others in a shooting rampage.
Rodger died after speeding through the
town in his black BMW, exchanging
fire with police, authorities said.
He was found dead in his car from a
gunshot wound to the head, believed
to be self-inflicted, with three legally
purchased semi-automatic weapons.
Moments before he began opening fire,
Rodger emailed his parents, therapist

He described the rejection he felt

Rodger had seen therapists off and

Mr Astaire told Reuters. There was no

Narendra Modi Takes Oath As India's Prime Minister

Narendra Modi has been sworn in
as India's 15th prime minister at an
inauguration ceremony in the capital
New Delhi attended by regional
leaders.
"I, Narendra Damodardas Modi, swear
in the name of God that I will maintain
the integrity of India," Mr Modi said in
Hindi at the ceremony.
"I will work without fear, anger or
hatred and will do justice to all as per
the codes of the constitution."
The 63-year-old came to power in a
landslide election victory, in which
his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) defeated Congress.
The BJP has a parliamentary majority
for the first time in 30 years.
For the first time in India's history, a
clutch of South Asian leaders watched
the inauguration, including the prime
minister of arch-rival Pakistan, Nawaz
Sharif.

Nawaz Sharif & Narinder Modi

'Great opportunity'
India and Pakistan have fought
three wars since they both gained
independence in 1947.
In an interview shortly before the
inauguration, Mr Sharif said Mr
Modi's arrival in power represented
"a great opportunity" for the nucleararmed rivals to forge a new era in their
troubled relationship.
"This is a chance to reach out to
each other. Both governments have
a strong mandate," Mr Sharif told
India's NDTV network, according to
a transcript provided by the Pakistan
High Commission.
"Both countries should rid the region

of instability and security that has

plagued us for decades.
"This could help in turning a new page
in our relations."
Mr Modi and Mr Sharif are expected to
hold bilateral talks on Tuesday.
Modi promises inclusive India
At the inauguration, Mr Modi promised
to forge a "strong and inclusive" India.
"As we devote ourselves to take India's
development journey to newer heights,
we seek your support, blessings and
active participation," he said in a
statement published on the prime
minister's website.
"Together we will script a glorious
future for India," he added.
"Let us together dream of a strong,
developed and inclusive India that
actively engages with the global
community to strengthen the cause of
world peace and development."
Mr Modi has spoken with the leaders of
the US and Russia, and he has become
one of only three people that Japanese
prime minister Shinzo Abe follows on
Twitter.
Invite to White House
US
president
Barack
Obama
congratulated Mr Modi after he was
sworn in as Indian prime minister
on Monday and said he was looking
forward to working with the new
Indian leader.
"As the president and prime minister
agreed in their call after the election,
as the world's two largest democracies,
India and the United States share a deep
bond and commitment to promoting
economic opportunity, freedom, and
security for our people and around the
world," a White House statement said.
The US administration denied Mr Modi
a visa in 2005, but Mr Obama has now
invited him to the White House.
"We look forward to working closely
together with the new government to
continue to strengthen and expand the
US-India strategic partnership for years
to come," the president's statement
said.
Even before his inauguration, Mr Modi

made waves on the global stage, where

once he was treated by many with
suspicion - and by some as a pariah for a rash of Hindu-Muslim violence
12 years ago in Gujarat, the western
state he ruled.
The low-caste son of a tea stallowner, Mr Modi has given India its
first parliamentary majority after 25
years of coalition governments, which
means he has ample room to advance
reforms that started 23 years ago but
have stalled in recent years.
Many supporters see him as India's
answer to the neo-liberal former US
president Ronald Reagan or British
leader Margaret Thatcher.
One foreign editor has ventured Mr
Modi could be so transformative he
turns out to be "India's Deng Xiaoping",
the leader who set China on its path of

spectacular economic growth.

Streamlined cabinet
The new prime minister kicked things
off on Sunday, with an announcement
that he would streamline the cabinet, a
move to a more centralised system of
governing aimed at breaking decisionmaking bottlenecks widely blamed for
dragging down economic growth.
Mr Modi said he would appoint
"super ministers" in charge of several
departments to make ministries
coordinate better.
Arun Jaitley is the frontrunner to be
named finance minister, party sources
said.
One of the top corporate lawyers in
the country and a close Modi aide,
Mr Jaitley served in a previous
BJP administration as commerce
minister.

Spurned, Man Stabs Woman, Turns Knife On Himself

Upset at the news that the woman he
wanted to marry would soon tie the
knot with someone else; a 23-yearold man killed his ladylove and then
stabbed himself with the same knife on
Monday night.
The accused, Aakash Sonawane,
stabbed Pooja Bhalerao (21), who
resided at Amrapali Nagar near
Subhash Tekdi in Ulhasnagar. Pooja
was set to get married on June 1 and
her parents were out shopping.
Around 9 pm, Aakash came to meet
Pooja at her house. Her brother was in

another room at that time. After some

time when Pooja's brother went to
check, he found both Pooja and Aakash
lying dead in a pool of blood. Pooja's
brother then informed the Vithalwadi
police station.
According to the police, Aakash was
in love with Pooja and wanted to
marry her, but she did not reciprocate
his feelings. They suspect that when
Aakash learned that Pooja's parents
had fixed her marriage, he visited her
house and stabbed her to death before
killing himself with the same knife.

The Alberta government announced in mind as well.
that the general minimum wage will be
raised to $10.20 on Sept. 1.
The liquor server minimum wage will
also increase to $9.20 from $9.05 an
hour at that time.
Alberta is the last province to hit the
$10 general minimum wage barrier.
While Alberta has the lowest
percentage of employees earning
minimum wage in the country, these
individuals form an important part of
our workforce," said Kyle Fawcett, the
minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and
Labour, in a release.
"Many work in the service and retail
sectors and are gaining the experience
they need to succeed. These changes
will give them a modest increase while
keeping the viability of their employers

The increase is based on a formula used

since 2011 that links the general wage
to annual increases in Average Weekly
Earnings (AWE) and Consumer Price
Index (CPI) in Alberta.
The province says the AWE rose 3.3
per cent in the last year, while the CPI
rose 1.4 per cent.
"When Albertas high personal
exemption and low tax rates are
factored in, the new general minimum
wage ranks second highest in Canada,
after Ontario," said the province in a
release.

Declining Aids Diagnoses Leads

B.C. Hospital To Repurpose Ward

Last year in British Columbia, 40

people were diagnosed with AIDS.
Twenty years ago, the story was much
different as about one person per day
was dying of the disease in Vancouver
alone.
The fading presence of the illness has
resulted in it no longer striking a chord
with younger generations, said one
support group.
Now the low rates of diagnosed
cases has led to a sort of symbolic
repurposing of Ward 10C at St. Pauls
Hospital, which has been used as a
dedicated AIDS ward since 1997.
The ward will still operate, instead
treating those with HIV the virus
that leads to AIDS hepatitis and
addictions.
The announcement to close the ward
was made by Premier Christy Clark
and others Tuesday.
AIDS Vancouver executive director
Brian Chittock called it a good news
story.
People arent being diagnosed with

AIDS anymore, at least to the extent

they were in the early 90s and late
80s, said Chittock. The number of
HIV patients going into the AIDS ward
has been reduced significantly.
Through medication and treatment,
Chittock said that HIV itself is often
reduced to a chronic disease rather than
the doorway to a terminal illness.
Rates have been reduced so
significantly that AIDS Vancouver is
even considering a name change, said
Chittock.
B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr.
Perry Kendall said HIV prevention
and treatment is working, but there is
always need for advancement.
Kendall said 200 to 300 people a year
are still diagnosed with HIV in B.C.
and the big concern is those who arent
aware they are infected allowing the
illness to gain a foothold, which is why
doctors test for it often.
They seek to test everyone of their
patients between the ages of 18 and
70, Kendall said.

spikes in water consumption and reduce
peak demand on the water system.
If businesses and residents continue
to conserve water, Metro Vancouver
can defer building higher dams, bigger
pump stations and larger water mains.
Morning-only lawn sprinkling will
help minimize additional costs, for
both taxpayers and the environment.

Travel Insurance Doesn't Pay For These Bank Customers

CIBC and RBC customers stung for giving wrong answers about unrelated health issues

Three customers who bought travel

insurance from Canadian banks are
outraged after being left with large
foreign medical bills.
Theyre like a good gambler that
never loses, said Cyrus Derakhshan of
Oakville, Ont. He is fighting RBC over
a $16,500 claim denial for his 70-yearold mother. For them its Heads I
win, tails you lose.
Cyrus Derakhshan is suing RBC after it
denied his mom's travel health insurance
claim, citing 'misrepresentation' of her
medical history.
The banks refused to pay in these cases,
based on how the customers answered
broad-ranging questions about their
health when they bought their policies.
They hold all the cards in their hand.
Its a poker game, and I dont think
we are the winners, said Jean Tetiuk,
of Toronto, whose $12,000 claim was
rejected by CIBC.
In each case, the medical emergencies
abroad had nothing to do with any preexisting conditions they were asked
about.
Paid extra, claim still denied
Another CIBC travel insurance
customer,
Carmen
Peixoto
of
Chilliwack, B.C., fights back tears
when she talks about the $10,000
medical bill she is stuck with.
I worked too hard, all my life. And
this bank is taking advantage of me? I
am really upset. Really, really upset.
The 69-year-old has high blood
pressure. She paid CIBC an extra
$100 premium to make sure her travel
insurance would cover her for that.
When her blood pressure soared, on
her trip last year, she was taken by
ambulance to a Geneva hospital.
CIBC later refused to pay, because
Peixoto filled out a CIBC questionnaire
sent to her after she returned from
her trip answering that she had
not been treated for a heart condition.
Before buying the policy, she had only
answered health questions over the
phone.
Records show she was tested for
heart problems in 2011, after she had

pain in her arm, but doctors found

nothing significant. Because of those
tests, CIBC said Peixoto should have
answered yes to the heart condition
question.
I was never treated for a heart condition.
I never had a heart condition. Ive been
tested and different things but I never
had a problem before. And I still dont
have a heart problem, said Peixoto.
She is also upset because CIBC was
asking her health questions after the
fact, while at the same time adjudicating
her claim.
I was tricked, because they never had
any intention of paying this claim. And
I find that totally incredible.
Tetiuk, another senior, is also furious at
CIBC for refusing to pay her $12,000
US medical bill, after she was treated
for a blood clot in her lung in Cape
Cod, Mass., in 2012.
Unrelated minor health issues cited
Insurance investigators dug into her
medical records and found a routine
colonoscopy had detected a mild
condition called diverticulosis, which
caused no symptoms and needed no
medication.
CIBC said that because of that, she
should have said yes to its question

Vancouver Detached Homes

Becoming More Unaffordable
Single-detached homes in Vancouver
are increasingly unaffordable to most
buyers, confining them to the condo
market, according to a quarterly index
from the Royal Bank.
The bank says strong price increases
in single-family homes led to a
deterioration in affordability in the
first quarter of the year.
A Vancouver bungalow eats up 82.4
per cent of household income to cover
mortgage, property tax, and utility
costs. Thats up 0.9 per cent from the
previous quarter.
Owning a single-family home, a
detached bungalow in this case, is
probably out of reach. Those who can

afford it are probably the higher echelons

of the income distribution in the area,
says RBC economist Robert Hogue.
But a condo is less than half as costly,
at 39.9 per cent of household income.
For
condominiums,
relatively
speaking, lets call it the more
affordable housing type in Vancouver.
And yet, [it is] less affordable than it is
in other centres, says Hogue.
In Toronto, a condo requires 34.2 per
cent of household income.
On the other hand, RBC points out that
after what was close to a year-long
slide, rising prices in the Vancouverarea have helped re-instill market
confidence.

about whether she had a bowel disease.

It also said she should have disclosed
that she has ostopenia, or low bone
density.
Everyone over 60 has this condition,
for sure. And diverticulosis was
determined when I had a colonoscopy
and I was told to eat a high-fibre diet
and come back in another 10 years,
said Tetiuk, who has appealed the
denial, with no success.
If Im not being treated and I am not
taking prescription drugs, in my mind I
dont have a condition that I should be
revealing. I dont even think about it.
Go Public asked CIBC for a response
to these cases, but didnt hear back
before deadline.
Suing the big bank
Derakhshan is taking RBC to court
over the claim denial for his mother,
Roghi Derakhshan. He bought the
policy for her, and when asked over
the phone about his moms medical
history, he said no to a question about
whether she had heart problems.
RBC Insurance gives you the illusion
that they are asking you questions in
layman terms and that these are just
general questions, said Derakhshan.
His mom has atrial fibrillation heart
palpitations with no adverse effects
and, like many older people, takes
baby Aspirin to prevent problems.
Derakhshan said he answered no to the
question, because RBC's questionnaire
said a heart condition "does not include
extra beats or palpitations, for which
you have not taken medication or
received treatment.
RBC later said that because
Derakhshans mom has cardiac
checkups and tried other medication
briefly, that counts as treatment.
Her $16,500 claim for unrelated
treatment of a bacterial lung infection
in Zurich has been denied, citing
misrepresentation of her medical
history.
My mom was already paying close
to $400 for one month of insurance.
She was spending thousands of dollars
to go on this European trip, said

Derakhshan.
Do you think that for another measly
$100 of insurance I would have any
reason to misrepresent or lie on her
behalf?
Derakhshan is suing RBC for $25,000
in small claims court.
My objective is bigger than my moms
case. I want to stand up for people who
have gone through the same thing, and
my final goal is to change policy.
RBC justifies denial
The head of RBCs insurance division,
Martha Turnbull, told Go Public that
even though Derakhshan didnt intend
to answer the question incorrectly, the
claim denial is justified.
It's a very regrettable decision, said
Turnbull who added that RBC denies
two per cent of claims, for all types of
insurance it sells.
Unfortunately, we need to make
consistent decisions for all clients.
Denying a claim is the most difficult
decision we make in the claims
department. We take our responsibility
and accountability to our clients very
seriously."
She also said RBC will fight this case
in court.
We will not be settling it, said
Turnbull. We are making sure that we
treat every client with the same respect
and care and that if the clients answer
the questionnaire correctly they pay
the correct premium, they're not in turn
subsidizing people who don't answer
the questions correctly.
Insurers hold 'legal weapon'
Insurance broker Bruce Cappon is
lobbying for provincial regulators
to force insurance companies to be
more up front about what the medical
questions really mean.
The way the system is rigged right
now is that insurers have a legal
weapon. The misrepresentation clause
is a legal weapon, said Cappon.
I find it very unfair that you are asking
these people to fight back when the
remedies would be very simple, just to
add a few changes to the regulations.
He also thinks it should be illegal
for insurers to refuse to pay for
treatment unrelated to any pre-existing
conditions.
The industry association wouldnt
say what percentage of travel medical
claims are denied for misrepresentation,
but that it is trying to educate consumers
on the pitfalls.
Know your health and consult a
health-care provider if you have any
questions, said a spokesperson for the
Travel Health Insurance Association of
Canada.
Cappon advises people to go as far as
checking their medical records before
buying policies, because that is what
the insurance companies look at.
Theres no onus on the insurance
providers to first provide the consumer
with the information they need to make
an accurate response. And thats whats
got to change.

Smart Steps To Save $$$ On Food

Do you often find yourself wishing
for a way to reduce your expenses?
With this list of suggestions for saving
money at the supermarket, you can
expect to save a significant amount on
your grocery bill and free up some cash
for savings, investment or fun!
Start saving now!
If you plan meals ahead using sale
items, keep track of your inventory, use
shopping lists, shop for bargains, cook
meals ahead, and collect easy frugal
recipes, you can save a substantial
amount of money. You can cut your
grocery bill in half using the following
methods!
Check your household inventory to
see what you already have. Keeping a
list will help you to reduce waste and
eliminate repeated trips to the store.
Create meal plans based on what you
have and loss leader sales. Use the
weekly flyers to see what's on sale,
buy as many extra sale items as your
budget and space allow. This way a
major portion of your weekly food
budget will be purchased at the lowest
possible price.
Always use shopping lists and meal
plans. To create a shopping list, write
down the ingredients that you need to
make the recipes from your meal plan.
Then add any extra items that you need

like toiletries, snacks, or pet items.

Using a well-organized list will save
you both time and money by organizing
your purchases, keeping you to a plan
and stopping repeat trips and impulse
buying.
Buy in bulk when the unit price is less.
This simply means to buy the 64 oz.
size at .07 per ounce instead of the 32
oz. size at 11 cents per ounce.
Use coupons only for purchases that
you would get anyway or want to try.
Use a coupon organizer to help you
easily find and use your coupons. I
carry mine with me to the store to
check if I can get a cheaper price for
the items on my list. Try to only use
coupons at stores that double or triple
them.
Never shop hungry. Stores are most
crowded after work hours and on the
weekends. If you can't shop from about
9 to 5 on weekdays, try shopping after
dinner instead of right after work when
you are tired, hungry, and the stores are
overcrowded.
Use the store savings cards. In addition
to the savings at the register with each
swipe, some will entitle you to special
coupons and offers. (Forget your card?
See if it's listed under your phone
number, or ask the clerk if he or she has
a spare card they can use for you.)

Watch cash register tape for errors

which are quicker to correct while in
line than later. This is easier to do if
you have a helper.
Try store brands and generics.
Premium store brands are often similar
in quality to name brands. Not sure
you can trust them? Many stores have
guarantees in case you try something
and decide it's horrible.
Look at top and bottom shelves for
the best bargains. Attractive displays,
fancy packaging, and convenience
foods almost always cost more. Stores
often put the most expensive and
prettiest packages at eye level.
Use a price booklet to trace your lowest
prices. It will help you to discover sales
patterns and good bargains vs too-high
prices.
Cook from scratch as often as
possible.
Vegetarian food is cheaper. Try to
have at least one vegetarian meal per

week. Stretching meat by cooking

casseroles or stir fry is also helpful.
Iced tea is often cheaper than soda.
And, too, hot tea is cheaper than
coffee. Drinking water with fancy
straws, colored ice cubes or fresh fruit
slices makes it more fun for both you
and your kids.
Freezing meals ahead saves money,
because you use up what was bought,
don't impulse shop and eat out less.
For example, make a double batch
of Sunday's chili to thaw and reheat
after Thursday's soccer game. This is
cheaper and healthier than McDonald's
drive-thru! You can also cook meals
ahead for as much as a month to save
you time and money.
Keep everything in a central
location, including meal plans, coupon
organizer, shopping lists, price book,
and sales flyers. I keep my ongoing
inventory list on a whiteboard, and my
shopping list on the refrigerator.

Here Are Five Tips To Help You

Repair Your Credit
1. Settle disputes with mobile phone
companies and other creditors. Cell
phone disputes are credit killers. Many
people just walk away from disputes.
What they dont realize is that the
creditor will report a delinquency to the
credit bureau 60 days after they think
its overdue. (It doesnt matter what you
think). The next month, theyll report
it 90 days overdue. Every month your
credit score drops. By the time they
report an R9 (9 months overdue), your
credit it hooped. And it doesnt matter
if the amount was only $100, or if you
thought it was illegitimate. Damaged
credit is usually far worse than your
loss of pride in paying something you
think wasnt fair.
2. Get at least one credit card (and use
it) and one other source of monthly
payment that reports to the credit
bureaus. Some people think they
are being wise by not having credit
cards. That might keep them out of
the financial trouble that a lack of
discipline would otherwise get them
into, but it will also ensure that they
have a bad credit rating (or none at all,
which means rock bottom). And you
cannot get a mortgage with only one
source of credit, no matter how good it
is. Even a gas card counts as a second
credit source. An RRSP loan is a great
option, too.
3. Pay your bills on time, every time. If
you cant pay the whole bill, pay at least
the minimum amount. It will avoid a

late report by your creditor to the

credit bureaus. If you can do more than
the minimum, paying the outstanding
balance down to below half of your
credit limit, thats even better.
4. Avoid shopping around for credit.
Going from place to place to try to get
a loan means that each place will be
checking your credit score. And each
of these official inquiries (hard hits)
lowers your score. Ive seen credit
scores that were very bad primarily
because of the number of hard hits on
the file.
5. Check your own score from time
to time and immediately correct any
errors you may find. The system
itself is not error-free, and they will
investigate errors you point out, and
correct them if they find your objection
to be legitimate. You can access your
own score and report (always do both)
for free and without the negative
impact of a hard hit (Its called a soft
hit). The free report and score will take
about three weeks in the mail. For a few
dollars, you can get them downloaded
immediately. (They have to make their
money, too.) Go to www.equifax.ca to
get your score and report.
If youre a frustrated renter who would
like to become a happy homeowner,
have some money available for a
deposit, but a credit score below 640,
then you should consider rent-to-own
as a good option.

Punishment Or Positive
Discipline?

Continued From Last Week

12. Listen to your childs ideas,

respect their feelings and praise
practical solutions. Agree on a
mutually acceptable, feasible solution.
E.g. You dont like brushing your
teeth because you find the toothpaste
tastes horrible, so we agreed that Ill
buy a different make and see if that
helps. You dont like me coming into
your room in the morning because you
are tired & dont feel like talking, so
instead, youre going to set an alarm
clock and Im going to leave you to get
up without nagging you.
13. At times every parent feels
overwhelmed and frustrated and
on the edge of imposing a reactive,
harsh discipline. When you feel like
this, it can be helpful to take time out
yourself (making sure your child is
safe). This is also a great way to model
appropriate behaviour to your child.
E.g. Mummys feeling really stressed! Im
going to sit in the garden for five minutes.
14. Make sure youre not too hard
on yourself. Its easy to be self-critical
and dwell on the situations in which you
werent happy with how you disciplined
your child. Instead, take time at the end
of each day to remind yourself of times
you handled things well and think about
what positive things that says about
your parenting skills.
How to Get Your Child to Listen
Childrens selective hearing is a big
source of frustration for parents! A
child who is defiant, stubbornly refuses
to cooperate and ignores simple
requests can make every day feel like
an uphill struggle.
Top Tips
Before you can expect your child to
listen, you need to ensure you really
listen to your child.
As a parent, the pressure of 101 things
that need to get done can sometimes
make it hard to listen. But when a
child is not feeling listened to, they are
more likely to whine, shout or throw a
tantrum to get your attention.
Careful listening shows that you
respect your childs feelings and gives
her space to explore a problem and,
often, find her own solution. Being
listened to can cause difficult feelings
to evaporate...cue less moaning, less
tantrums, less tears. Most importantly,
if you listen to your child, she is more
likely to listen to you.
How to Listen
Give your full attention. Stop what
you are doing, turn to your child,
make eye contact and listen to
what they are saying.
Acknowledge what your child
is saying with a non-committal,
simple Mmm, I see, Oh,
right.

Often behind what your child is

saying (or even behind how they
are acting, if not yet talking) is a
feeling. Identify the feeling and
give it a name.
That sounds frustrating
Youre disappointed that we have to
leave now
Its crucial to accept feelings and resist
the temptation to make things better by
denying them (hey, theres no reason
to be so upset).
Diffuse difficult situations by
giving your child his wishes in
fantasy. Wave a wand with words!
Youd really like it if you could stay
up later
If only I could make that orange juice
into your favourite apple juice
How to Communicate
To get your child to listen, think carefully
about exactly how you communicate.
Subtle differences in words, tone and
body language may affect whether your
child tunes in or out!
Tone of voice
How you say something is as important,
if not more important, as what you say
Use an up-beat, encouraging,
positive tone as much as possible.
When indicating limits, sound definite
and confident. Any hint of uncertainty
and youre more likely to be ignored,
debated (But please, can't I just...), or
guilt-tripped (Its soo unfair).
To indicate disapproval, use a
firmer, lower, authoritative tone,
but dont shout.
Avoid nagging. Ask once nicely,
once firmly and then take action.
If you typically repeat yourself
several times before your take
action, your child will learn to
ignore your initial requests.
Body language
Communicate from close by. Dont
shout through from the next room.
Always get down to your childs
height and make eye contact. An
adult towering above a child can
be intimidating.
Words
Use clear commands and keep
requests brief and to the point.
Limit yourself to a few important
words (e.g. 8 Oclock. Bedtime).
Avoid accusing (you never
listen!), criticising (youre so
lazy), or threatening (if you
dont hurry up, then Ill leave
without you).
Avoid phrasing which implies that
cooperation is an option!
Shall we...? Could you... gives
your child a get out clause (i.e.
No!)
Instead, make requests clear, short
and specific: Bedtime now

Low-Carb Vegan Diet Reduces

Weight, Heart Disease Risk

In addition to weight loss, a specific

low-carbohydrate diet may also reduce
the risk of heart disease by 10 percent
over 10 years, a research indicates.
Researchers at St. Michael's Hospital
have shown for the first time that the
diet, often called Eco-Atkins, is a lowcarbohydrate vegan diet.
"We designed a diet that combined both
vegan and low-carb elements to get the
weight loss and cholesterol-lowering
benefits of both," said David Jenkins,
director of the clinical nutrition and
risk modification centre at St. Michael's
Hospital here.
The team compared Eco-Atkins to a
high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet.
The
Eco-Atkins
diet
reduced
cholesterol by 10 percent while also

helping participants lose on average

four pounds more than the highcarbohydrate, low-fat diet over six
months.
"We could expect similar results in the
real world because study participants
selected their own diets and were able to
adjust to their needs and preferences,"
Dr Jenkins noted.
Eco-Atkins participants aimed for
a balance of 26 percent of calories
from carbohydrates, 31 percent from
proteins and 43 percent from fat primarily vegetable oils.
Predominant fat sources for the EcoAtkins diet were nuts, vegetable oils,
soy products and avocado, said the
study published in British Medical
Journal Open.

Red Wine Can Fight Cavities Too

For red wine lovers, there is another

bubbly news. According to new
research, red wine, as well as grape
seed extract, could potentially help
prevent cavities - and your visit to the
dentist's chair too!
This discovery could lead to the
development of natural products that
ward off dental diseases with fewer
side-effects.
To prove their point, researchers grew
cultures of bacteria responsible for
dental diseases as a biofilm.
They dipped the biofilms for a couple
of minutes in different liquids -- red
wine, red wine without the alcohol, red
wine spiked with grape seed extract,
and water and 12 percent ethanol -- for
comparison.

"Red wine with or without alcohol

and wine with grape seed extract were
the most effective at getting rid of the
bacteria," said lead author M. Victoria
Moreno-Arribas, an authority on wine
chemistry from Spain.
Cavities, periodontal disease and tooth
loss affect an estimated 60 to 90 percent
of the global population.
The problems start when certain
bacteria in the mouth get together and
form biofilms, which are communities
of bacteria that are difficult to kill.
Previous research has suggested
that polyphenols, grape seed extract
and wine can slow bacterial growth,
said the study that appeared in the
Journal of Agricultural and Food
Chemistry.

Pleasures And Dangers Of Hot Tub Baths

Have you just checked into a hotel,
gone to the health club in dire need
of relaxation? So now you're sitting
in a hot tub and the world looks a lot
better? Unfortunately, you should
know there are pleasures and hazards
to most things in life and hot tubs are
no exception. One of the hazards is
"Hot Tub Lung" (HTB) infection, and
you may want to think again.
Perhaps as you were reaching to turn on
the jets you saw this message out of the
corner of your eye, "Persons suffering
from heart disease, high blood pressure,
diabetes, or other health problems
should not enter the spa without prior
medical consultation and permission
from your doctor". There may also be
warnings not to consume alcohol, use
temperatures over 104 degrees and if
pregnant, to consult a physician.
In today's litigation riddled society this
caution helps to ward off law suits.
After all, when McDonald's can be
successfully sued because you spilled
a cup of hot coffee while driving and
burned yourself, there's small wonder
for such messages. But sad to say there

are potential health problems lurking

in hot tubs.
It's hard to find a better place to grow
bacteria than a hot wet area and one
bacterium, Mycobacterium avium,
has a special liking for this location.
This is particularly true if tubs are not
cleaned as recommended by health
authorities. And chlorine loses some of
its effectiveness at high temperatures.
But how can a germ in the water get
into your lungs? Bubbles form in the
contaminated water from the force of
hot tub jets. These bubbles burst when
they rise to the surface dispersing the
bacteria into the air.
Mycobacterium avium is related to the
class of bacteria that causes tuberculosis,
but luckily it's not contagious. It can,
however, cause fever or chills, a wet
cough, tightness of the chest, fatigue
and shortness of breath.
Diagnosis of HTB is made by chest
X-rays or CT scan of the lungs. Testing
water in the tub will also detect this
bacterium. The usual treatment consists
of corticosteroids and antibiotics to
combat the inflammation and infection.

Women Not Immune From

Snoring-Stroke Connection

It is not only men who are at risk of

stroke linked to obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA). A study has found that the link
between OSA and stroke may be just as
strong among women too.
Snoring is a cardinal feature of the
OSA syndrome.
Previous studies have attributed most
significant risks of stroke and OSA
links to male patients perhaps because
men tend to develop OSA earlier than
women.
Women are just as susceptible as men
when it comes to the vascular effects of
OSA, the findings of the study showed.
"Our results could have a substantial
impact on our thinking of the risks
associated with sleep apnea in women,"

said Suzie Bertisch, research faculty

member at Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center in the US.
From a clinical standpoint, the results
could help clinicians provide more
proactive treatment for reducing
cardiovascular risk in their female
OSA patients, she noted.
For the study, the researchers reexamined the association between
OSA and stroke using data from 5,442
participants.
The researchers not surprisingly found
a significant association between stroke
risk and OSA.
What was surprising was that they also
found that the risk of stroke was equal
among male and female participants.

Fortunately, this is not a common

infection.
What is the risk of heart attack while
using a hot tub? Some authorities are
concerned that hot water could cause
extra stress on the heart by increasing
the heart rate.
Dr. Thomas Allison, a cardiologist at
Mayo Clinic, says that the chance of
this happening is "pretty rare". But he
advises that a stay in the tub should not
last more than 15 minutes.
Other cardiologists suggest that patients
who are taking beta-blockers and ACE
inhibitors which lower blood pressure
should use hot tubs cautiously. They
should be aware of the risk of fainting
after a long hot soak.
Sitting in a hot tub also causes the blood
vessels to dilate as the body adjusts to
increased heat. This would normally
cause a decrease in blood pressure as
widened vessels mean less pressure
is needed to push blood through the
body. But the force of water against
the body prevents this from happening.
Stepping out of the tub removes this
counterforce. In addition, gravity

allows blood to drop towards the feet

and as the brain loses blood fainting
may occur.
Also reported have been deaths due
to heat stroke from prolonged hot tub
soaks. Being immersed for a long time
prevents the body from sweating to
remove excess heat.
It's debatable whether hot tubs could
cause damage to a developing fetus. But
there's been enough concern expressed
that in all probability pregnant women
should forgo this pleasure.
For the majority of people a few
minutes in a hot tub is safe and
beneficial. And for those suffering from
arthritis it helps to ease stiff joints and
tight muscles by increasing blood flow
and loosening connective tissue. But
enjoy without alcohol. Imbibing makes
you more likely to ignore warnings,
become overheated and increases the
risk of slipping.
Obviously huge numbers of hot tubs
are in use and there's no epidemic
of hot tub lung infection. So for the
majority of people these tubs are safe.
But be aware.

Bananas Is More Than Potassium

We know the basics of bananas that bananas are a good source for potassium but do we know some of its unexpected benefits? Here are some bonus facts
about the benefits of bananas that is not known commonly.
1. Potassium: It is good for your

helping to suppress calcium excretion,
bananas reduce the risk of developing
osteoporosis and brittle bones as you
age.
2. Fiber: Bananas are also an excellent
source of fiber. To aid in maintaining
a healthy digestive system, bananas

help food move smoothly through

your digestive tract. This also helps
in bananas relieve the symptoms of
heartburn.
3. Vitaminis and Mineral: With high
levels of Vitamin B6, bananas are
essential to producing healthy blood.
They contain good levels of Vitamin
C, magnesium and manganese which
enhances your immunity.

cancer, bananas also help to protect

against stomach ulcers.

Astrology

34 www.fijitimescanada.com

Aries

You will start doing initial paper work

for some creative and ambitious project
that is very dear to your heart. You will
receive whole-hearted support from
close friend and relatives. You will
find yourself at your best in public
relations and will be able to muster
enough support for your work even
from financial institutions. If working
towards starting a co-operative venture,
it is advisable to have one single
institution, or financier, to back your
project and then distribute some shares
to others rather than having a loose-knit
group. Those seeking elections to board
of directors or to important committees
will emerge successful. Youngsters
will plan a holiday-cum-study tour
to a forested or mountainous region.
It will be a fruitful trip. Some of you
are likely to get emotionally involved
with a colleague of the opposite sex. A
new romance is in the air and assures a
happy and lasting association.

Taurus

You will get involved in some social

or cultural work or community
development schemes. It seems your
close friends or associate will urge you to
participate more in such social activities
that will benefit you in the long run. The
pressure of new work that comes along
suddenly will thwart your plan for taking
a leave or withdrawing from routine
work. The employed may be facing
some problems at home. Perhaps heavy
entertaining has increased expenses and
you are now finding it difficult to cater to
the needs of the family. You will have a
grand get together at home inviting most
of your relatives and close friends. Love
life is fine. There is a word of caution for
those involved in love for long, but not
married. Someone may now try to create
a rift between you and your beloved by
speaking lies and spreading unpleasant
rumours.

Gemini

You will succeed in every endeavour

and achieve excellent results in your
work and career. An improvement
in financial position spurs you on to
take risks in new ventures that prove
immensely profitable. Businesspersons
will sign new deals that will assure
them of long-term benefits. Those
in artistic or creative fields will do
extremely well. Youngsters trying to
achieve a breakthrough in the field
of cinema or television will get an
opportunity to work with a person of
renown. Those desirous of setting up
a small-scale industry will be able to
do so. Benefits accrue to you through
state and governmental agency, hence
if seeking any sanctions or financial
assistance through such organisations
you are certain to get these soon.
Personal affairs run smoothly. You will
enjoy the delights of intimate romance
in the company of your beloved.

Cancer

The current period is extremely beneficial

one and monetary returns from your
investments will be substantial. If you do
not need cash this week you should wait
for a while longer to make further profit
in your investments. Security at work
will give the confidence that you need
to explore new areas and move from one
success to another. However, do not be
in rush to make large commitments in
fresh ventures, for there will be other,
and more beneficial offers coming
your way soon. The employed will be
assigned a special task that gives them
an opportunity to display their talents.
Your tendency to flirt could now land
you in an embarrassing situation. Try
not to push your luck, especially if you
are already in love. You will find your
sweetheart seeking commitment from
you regarding your future plans. You
have to decide now else your relationship
or your association will end.

Leo

A sudden travel plan may take you

towards south or southeast. Some of
you may travel overseas of a special
assignment. Some of you may travel
abroad to scan opportunities for job or
business. It will be a fruitful journey.
Some of you will start a new work or
open a branch office in another city.
Those seeking employment overseas
will get favourable offers this week.
Students will join training classes in a
preparation for a competitive exam. A
study or training programme is on the
curriculum for most of you. Students
preparing for tests for the enrolment to
a foreign university will succeed in their
exams. A younger relative who lives
away from you will visit you for a few
days. Those of you, who have married
recently, will get the good news of a
new arrival. Love life is quite exciting.

Virgo

Married women looking for buying a

new house will receive an enticing offer
that suits their requirement perfectly.
You will have the resources to purchase
this property and will soon move your
residence. Those of you who are keen
to bring about a major change in their
career will be determined to go ahead
with their plans at any cost. This is
particularly for those in age group 45 50. The employed are given additional
responsibilities at work that entails
working until late hours. You may
have to cancel your social engagement
or other extracurricular activities due
to heavy workload. However, your
employer will suitably compensate
you. Love life is returning to normal,
especially for those who have been
having constant tiffs with their mate.

Libra

You need to concentrate on routine work

activities. The present environment at
your work place may not be conducive
and you could feel frustrated at times.

Friday May 30, 2014

Do not harbour thoughts of changing

your job or work for this could result
in a setback. Business people will do
better and will be able to successfully
conclude their current assignment.
Your past arrears will be cleared this
week and you will be able to pay off
a debt or a loan. At home matters are
much better especially since you have
started to spend more time with your
family. Married women desirous of
progeny are likely to conceive this
week. Those already in an advanced
stage of pregnancy are advised to seek
constant medical advice to avoid any
complications at the time of childs
delivery. Seniors may require seeking
medical attention.

Scorpio

This is a fortunate period for taking up

some of the pending and unfinished
work, which has been put off for some
reason. This will help you to take up work
on your new venture on which you have
set your heart and have already sounded
a few friends. The pressure of work at
your work place may be less giving you
an opportunity to get closely acquainted
with a couple of colleagues who are more
experienced and have been sympathetic
and understanding. This may help you
in getting certain ideas to build up your
career not necessarily in the same set up.
Domestic matters will also occupy your
time as a misunderstanding over money
matters will need a lot of convincing to
remove seeds of doubt created by some
outside sources and may require all
your ingenuity. If you are fancy-free a
romantic interlude is indicated.

Sagittarius

It is a favourable week for the

employed in that they will be given
an important task to handle. All
facilities will be made available to
you for this project. Those in the field
of mass communication and media
may become the recipients of award.
Business people will get news of a
large contract from the government or
state agency. Some of you may decide
to set up ancillary units for a large
organisation that will underwrite all
your production. Workingwomen may
decide to go into their own business in
partnership with close friends. Those in
the field of dress designing, jewellery,
advertising or exports will succeed in
setting up a lucrative enterprise. Love
life remains happy with your giving
complete attention to the needs of your
mate or beloved.

Capricorn

This is the time to renew your contacts

or devote attention to public relations. It
is quite likely that some domestic issues
and responsibilities act as a constraint
in your working. Do not waste any

time on such affairs because by doing

this you could be ruining your chances
of success in your work. Working
women, especially those in the field
of advertising, marketing, or public
relations, will get sudden promotion
and additional facilities at work. The
married will hardly get any time for
romance. It could be due to your busy
schedule or your mate could be wary
of a friend of your own sex, who may
be trying to keep you away from your
beloved. Listen to the advice of your
sweetheart who has an uncanny instinct
to recognise unsavoury elements.

Aquarius

In business you will be able to carry

out your activities without any hitch.
Do not waste your time in recoveries
but rather follow up with vigour
your new project that needs all your
attention and efforts. At your work
place carry out your assignment with
all the speed sincerity and attention
as there are some elements that are
waiting for a lapse on your part.
Fortunately your seniors know you
and your work and you will not be
affected at all. If you are given some
extra assignment you should not refuse
it though you may have been burdened
with work. This may affect promises
you made to the family, as you will
not be able to fulfill them. If you have
been planning to buy a house or a shop
you have bright chances of finding and
finalising one now which will almost
be a dream come true. Youngsters will
be successful in competition or contest
bringing a reward, which make them
happy and proud.

Pisces

Your business plans hit a snag stalling

most proceedings. Do not worry for the
delays, as these may eventually prove
to your advantage. In fact, if you can
withdraw some of your money from
incomplete or loss making ventures
you should get the amount and call it
quits. You will be in mood to socialise
and attend several functions and prove
that age is no bar for enjoying life and
getting along with people. Keep away
from some bores or those who are
known to indulge in scandals. At home
while reviewing your finances you may
come across an unpleasant fact about
the amount you have and the sum you
are committed. This may require you
to take up some extra assignment
and sacrifice a part of your luxurious
living. But by any chance do not go
in for speculation or gambling, which
will entail loss. Do not give credence
to some people who have something
to tell you about your mate or beloved
that may be an exaggerated version of
a minor happening.

What Is Sumeet Raghavan, Tanaaz And Bakhtiyar Iranis Badi

Dooooor Se Aaye Hai All About
The well known TV actors are all set to come up with a brand new comedy show on Sab TV

In an attempt to break the clutter and

monotony in the comedy genre on
Indian television, Sab TV and HatsOff Productions are geared to bring
to viewers a truly out of the world
experience, and quite literally so with
Badi Dooooor Se Aaye Hai, said to be
the countrys first alien comedy series.
Starting June 9, the show will feature a
cast of 18, including well known actors
like Sumeet Raghavan, Tanaaz and
Bakhtiyar Irani.
Its plot revolves around an alien family
coming to earth in search of their lost
son. Equipped with superpowers, they
assume human form to blend in with the
community. The series will show the
struggle of the alien family to fit into the
norms of society and culture and their
funny experiences with humans. The

audience needed something out of the

world, something not seen earlier, so
we took the term out of the world
seriously for a comedy show, and came
up with this show, which is Indias first
alien comedy series, J.D. Majethia,
founder, Hats-Off Productions, said at
the shows launch here Tuesday.
The idea is to always come up with
something different, he said, adding that
hes a huge fan of Hollywood filmmakers
like James Cameron and Steven Spielberg,
who made films like Avatar and E.T. the
Extra-Terrestrial. Badi Dooooor will
cover a range of human emotions like
love, laughter and curiosity to keep the
family audience engaged. Some of the
cast members were present for the shows
launch, and they were visibly excited
about the new concept.

'Hyderabad Blues' Was Mistaken Tushar Kapoor On Heavy Petting

A date with actor Tusshar Kapoor and a pet but like a son to him and when
For A Blue Film
his miniature Pomeranian Poshto is on Tusshar comes back from his travels he

After 10 years in Atlanta, USA, 37-yearold Nagesh Kukunoor, returned to

his hometown of Hyderabad, armed
with a Master's degree in chemical
engineering from the Georgia
University of Technology.
He was chasing a long cherished dream
of making a film which will launch
a career in cinema. He had already
written the script while still in the US
and the story liberally borrowed from
the experiences of an NRI friend who
was going through the process of an
arranged marriage, and his own feelings
of alienation as he tried to figure out
which was home--India or America?
Since no one was willing to back a
novice, Nagesh decided to produce and
direct the film himself. He invested his
savings, Rs 1.7 million, in Hyderabad
Blues, shot it over17 days and jumpstarted the indie film movement in India.
"I did not follow a single rule of
commercial cinema. There were no
songs and dances, the film was in three
languages--Hindi, English and Telugu,
and featured the cheapest actor I could
find," laughs Nagesh, who was forced
to play the protagonist, Varun Naidu,
because the actors he auditioned were
either amateurs from drama circles,
or from the fringes of the Telugu film
industry who did not speak a word of
Hindi or English.
He recalls shooting the climax at
a marriage hall swarming with his
own relatives who filled the mandap
leaving just around eight people in the
audience.
"I managed to create the impression of
crowds using creative angles, a trick I

use even today," he admits, recalling

how during the course of the day he
changed the camera set-up over 50
times.
"And since my only assistant director
Elahe Hiptoola was also acting in the
film, I had to keep track of the shots.
And I couldn't over-shoot because
given my shoestring budget I would
then be eating into another shot."
It was enough to give any filmmaker
the blues but for Nagesh the Blues in
the title came from his own sense of
rootlessness.
However, the first reaction from the
censors was, `Title badlo' because they
thought it referred to pornography and
he'd made a blue film.
"When I tried telling them that by
blues I meant sad, they were even
more convinced that I should change
my title because you couldn't project
Hyderabad as a city of depressed
people," he laughs at the memory.
"Shyam Shroff even made me change
my tagline from `Thirst for home' to
"A man caught between two cultures'
to ensure that people here connected
with the rom-com. Fortunately, no one
objected to the rickshaw in the poster
which today has become a relic of the
past but 16 years ago it was a way of
integrating the past with the future."
The film finally opened on July 17,
1998 and went on to become a surprise
hit. Says Nagesh, "And though I had
never thought of it earlier, six years
later I came up with Hyderabad Blues
2 which gave me the bragging right to
say that I had kick started the trend of
sequels using the word 2 in the title."

The Love Punch** (PG)

Middle Age Crazy!

By Robert Waldman

Please do not confuse The Love Punch

for The Love Guru. Unlike the latter this
little charmer from EOne Entertainment
should find an eager to please audience
at The international Village Cinemas.
Relevant in today's world The Love
Punch takes us into a disjointed
family and the omnipresent effects of
downsizing. No one likes to lose their
spouse or their job but poor Richard gets
a double dose of living In the modern
world. Reality sets in and former James
Bond hunk Pierce Brosnan (Evelyn)
whose aging gracefully looks up to
the challenge. Times are tough for this
single dad and corporate executive
still reeling after all these years from
his divorce from Kate. Buoyant and
perky as ever Emma Thompson (Love
Actually) embodies the perfect ex who
just wants to move on with her life.
Despite being on their own you can
sense these two still hold some sort of
feelings for one another, egged on by
their best friends the neighbourly Jerry
and Penelope. Sharp and comical are
the musings of Timothy Spall and Celia

Imrie who are the perfect cheerleaders

for this long lost couple.
When trouble at work comes home
to roost it's up to Richard and Kate to
somehow find a way out of a financial
mess that could put what's left of their
fractured family at risk. What follows
is a whimsical romp that sees this
fantastic foursome become involved in
all sorts of underhanded subterfuge to
right an apparent wrong.
Done in a madcap comedy style The
Love Punch almost seems like a throw
back to those old Doris Day Rock
Hudson flicks. Merry old England is
used to great advantage as is gay Paris.
Director and writer Joel Hopkins here
crafts a mild mannered well executed
romance that though not long on big
laughs has just enough giggles and
tender moments that most mature
audiences will find appealing.
Both Pierce and Emma have a soothing
appeal and their comical connections
are effective. The Love Punch for 94
minutes will make you realize never let
go of a good thing.

Justin Bieber 'Pledges To Donate

$545,000' To Aids Charities

Justin Bieber has reportedly decided to

donate 545,000 dollars to Aids charities
at a gala in Cannes.
Sources revealed that the 'Baby'
hitmaker quietly announced that
he would match another guest's
donation amount of 545,000 dollars,

at the amfAR Cinema Against Aids

bash at the Cannes Film Festival, as
reported.
Sources added that the staff later
checked with the singer, who confirmed
he was certain he wanted to give the
huge amount.

Morgan Freeman Planning To

Retire From Hollywood

Hollywood veteran Morgan Freeman is reportedly planning to retire

The actor, 76, is apparently ready to
call time on his 50 year showbiz career
and live out his days at his sprawling
Mississippi farm, as reported.
Morgan severely damaged his arm in a
car crash and lives in constant agony.
"Morgan has some serious health
issues, and it can be agony for him
just to get through a working day on
the set. Even a year ago, he admits the
thought of retiring hadn't even crossed

his mind, but it's front and center now.

"He wants to live out his days in peace,
away from the cameras. He tries to hide
the pain that shoots up his arm, but you
can see him grimacing. His farm is a
haven where he can read, walk around
and be alone with his thoughts. He still
gets stacks of scripts to consider and
remains one of the most in-demand
narration and voice-over people in the
business," a source said.

George Clooney May Face

100K Pound Import Duty For
Alamuddin's Wedding Ring

George Clooney is currently facing

100,000 pounds tax bill for the ring
that he gave to his his bride-to-be Amal
Alamuddin.
The 53-year-old actor's lawyer fiancee
had flashed the 415,000 pound ring
after touching down in London from

Malibu, California, where the lovebirds

celebrated their upcoming nuptials.
UK customs officials could demand a
hefty 100,000 pounds in import duty, as
the law states that any gems worth more
than 390 pounds brought to Britain from
outside the EU are subject to taxes.

Paul Walker's 'Fast And Furious'

To Be Wrapped Up Using 'Face
Replacement'

'Fast and Furious 7' will be reportedly

finished with the help of New Zealand's
Weta Digital company and using "face
replacement".
According to sources, the film will
be finished "more or less as scripted",
by replacing Walker with (computergenerated) face replacement as
reported.
Insiders told the Hollywood Reporter
that the filmmakers have two of Paul's

brothers as well as an actor to 'play'

Paul when needed and Walker's brother
Caleb would be used for the dead star's
body size and mannerisms, while Cody
would be used for his eyes.
Weta Digital will reportedly capture
stand-ins before face replacement that
could be added later by computer.
Walker died in a tragic car crash,
when the Porsche Carerra GT he was
traveling in hit a pole and caught fire.

What Your Lipstick Shade Says

About You
Picking a lipstick shade is just like picking your daily outfit.
Relationships

Signs Showing You're Melting Her

Heart
It is often said that figuring out women is close to impossible. All their signs
are obvious yet unbelievably subtle. So, how do you know if she's into you?
Here are 11 signs to tell if that girl who melts your heart feels the same way
about you...

Lipstick not only draws attention to

your lips, but can also give people an
insight to your personality. Here are a
few popular lip colours and how they
reflect your personality.
Red
A bright shade of red immediately draws
attention to your lips and portrays you
as bold and confident enough to draw
attention to your features. Your lips
say, "Look at me, I'm not afraid." You
are projecting a strong vibe of sexuality
and ambition. You are passionate,
sensuous, confident and full of energy.
Appeal: 5/5
Tip: There's nothing that can go wrong
when wearing this shade, but remember
not to overdo it.
Pink
This shade is very girly and is
therefore, unsurprisingly, favoured
by younger women. People who wear
this colour generally project a sense of
acceptance, spunk and innocence. The
fuchsia shade projects elegance and
sophistication with a strong feminine
streak and is ideal to wear on any
formal occasion.
Appeal: 3/5
Tip: This colour can be worn for a girls'
night out.
Nude shade
Those who tend to wear this shade
are said to be down-to-earth and not
pretentious. They are easygoing, cool
and calm. The shade highlights an
undertone of curiosity and projects a
vibe of comfort.
Appeal: 4.5/5
Tip: It's a safe colour and therefore

doesn't make a unique statement,

but can't go wrong when worn. Guys
generally feel more comfortable
around women who wear these shades.
Purple
This shade projects the wearer as
mystical, powerful and regal. This
colour is feminine and romantic, yet
strong and confident. Lighter shades
project sophistication. This shade
also depicts a subtle shade of sultry
sexiness.
Appeal: 2.8/5
Tip: It could be sexy, but at the same time
may make you seem unapproachable,
so be careful when you wear it.
Orange
The colour represents warmth and the
person as being just plain fun! It shows
your genuine side and the need to be
different.
You are also perceived as adventurous
as not anyone can pull off this colour.
Appeal: 3.9/5
Tip: Guys will love your carefree
attitude, so wear those shades if you
can.
Black
This is another colour that a few can
pull off, but when done, it proves that
you are a confident and bold person.
This is another colour to depict your
gothic side and therefore cannot be
worn for any and every occasion. It
could be worn at parties and will go
well with any outfit.
Appeal: 1/5
Tip: If they aren't frightened by your
looks, guys would probably consider
you unapproachable.

1. Nothing is more important than

you
She responds to your texts, pings,
tweets, social-networking chats and
emails in less than an hour. Your phone
calls are never ignored without a long
sorry message.
2. She repeats the phrase "Someone
like you"
Either her description of Mr. Perfect is
someone very similar to you or she just
admits that she wants "someone like
you" over and over again.
3. Her friends are now your friends
If a girl likes you, her friends know.
Hence they try to add you on your
social-networking page or meet you,
but none of her girlfriends are ever
allowed to carry on a conversation with
you for more than five minutes.
4. She is always One step too close
Whether you're sitting at a restaurant
or you're walking on the streets, she is
always that one step too close with her
hands brushing yours.
5. She is there for you no matter what
Doesn't matter if it's mid day or
midnight, sober or drunk, if you call,
she will answer and talk. She may have
to sleep to look fresh for the biggest
moment of her life tomorrow, but she'd
rather be talking to you.
6 Your ex-girlfriends are her best
and worst topics
She wants to know everything about
your ex-girlfriend so she can determine
what you like and don't. But she also
tells you why you're so much better

off without them and picks on them

constantly.
7. Everything about you is a big deal
Be it your birthday, your parents'
wedding anniversary or even a
promotion at work, she is overjoyed
for you. She always lets you know how
your happiness makes her happy.
8. She always has a smile for you
When you're having an awfully bad
day, she will do everything she can to
make you smile. She will not rest until
she knows you're OK.
9. She makes sure everything is
Perfect
If you make plans to meet, she reconfirms thrice because she wants to
know for sure you'll be there. When
she shows up five minutes early, she'll
be dressed to perfection. Even if you're
meeting her at 2 in the morning, she'll
make an effort to look good for you.
10. She has her jealous moment
If you tell her about this girl you
believe is pretty, you will find an
obvious change in her tone. She will
then proceed to give you an hour's
lecture about anything and everything
she can find wrong in that girl.
11. Every word you utter matters
She not only listens carefully to
everything you say, but she remembers
the tiniest details from every
conversation you've ever had. Don't
be surprised when your birthday gift
is something you mentioned once in a
drunk conversation in the middle of the
night three months ago.

How To Know If You Are Madly In Love

There are obvious signs that can tell you how deeply in love you are.
Feeling the blues, always?
Well, yes this could be the first sign to
tell you when you are feeling the blues
all the while and have goose bumps
and butterflies in your stomach for no
reason at all or for silly reasons.
You keep blushing all the time
This again is a sign that tells you 'you
are smitten for the first time' when
you see yourself in a very good mood
and your friends always spot you
daydreaming and blushing and getting
lost in your thoughts. That's definitely
mush and that's definitely the crush you
need to explore.
Your heart longs for that person
Your eyes go around hunting for just a
glance and you will be satisfied even

if you could see the person for even a

second and that gives you maximum
satisfaction. This does not end here as
the more you get to see the person, the
more the heart longs for the person.
This is surely first love.
You experience things for the first time
If you feel the excitement is new, the
feelings in your heart are the ones you
have never experienced before and there
are hundreds of emotions running hither
and thither inside. You're feeling ecstatic
at the same time there is anxiety brewing
inside your heart that makes you feel
your heart beat like never before - dhub,
dhub, dhub, and more dhub dhub.
Buddy, you have been smitten. Go and
get yourself a love doctor.

Super Foods For Your Hair

Suffering from hair loss? Include these foods in your diet and maintain it
healthy.
Eggs:

The colourful red, yellow and green

bell peppers are great source of vitamin
C, which is necessary for hair health.
Vitamin C is needed to ensure that
there is enough iron in red blood cells
to carry oxygen to hair follicles. It is
also used to form collagen, a structural
fiber required for hair follicles to stay
healthy. Vitamin C deficiency can lead
to dry, splitting hair that breaks easily.
Lentils:

Rich in biotin, a B vitamin essential for

hair growth and overall scalp health,
eggs are great for hair. Include these
protein-rich foods in your diet or you
can even opt for a homemade hair
mask containing egg and olive oil. Mix
two egg whites with four tablespoons
of olive oil. Make it into a thick paste
and apply it on your hair. Leave it for
30 minutes and then rinse. Some other
high-biotin foods include peanuts,
almonds, wheat bran, avocado and
low-fat cheese.
Spinach:

A good source of folate and iron, this

leafy vegetable can go a long way in
inducing hair growth. Folate helps
building red blood cells, which then
carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Have
spinach regularly as a part of your
salad.

2014 Ford Escape

2014 Ford Escape: New Car Review
The 2014 Ford Escape compact
crossover SUV combines sporty good
looks with cutting-edge technology,
appealing engine options and a high
fun-to-drive factor. The Escape also
offers features found in no other
compact SUV in this price range,
including a rear cargo door that opens
automatically when you wave your foot
under the bumper. The Escape can even
parallel park itself. And whether you're
hauling people or stuff, you'll find the
roomy Escape to be an exceptionally
accommodating companion.
What's New for 2014?
The Escape receives minor equipment
updates this year, including standard
SYNC and a rearview camera across the
board. Also, the 2.0-liter turbo engine
is no longer standard on Titanium,
which comes with the 1.6-liter turbo
out of the box and offers the 2.0 as an
extra-cost option.
What We Like
Sleek styling; powerful but fuelefficient turbocharged engines; SYNC
voice-activated infotainment system;
class-leading technology, including
available MyFord Touch
What We Don't
Advanced tech reserved for priciest
Escapes; firm ride in Titanium model
How Much?
$23,595 to $31,745
Fuel Economy
The entry-level Escape S is powered
by a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine good
for 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of
torque, and fuel economy of 22 miles
per gallon city/31 mpg hwy. A 6-speed
automatic is the only transmission
choice and all-wheel drive is not
available.
Next up is the SE and SEL. These
use a 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbocharged
4-cylinder engine rated at 178 hp and
184 lb-ft of torque, and fuel economy
of 23 mpg city/32 mpg hwy with frontwheel drive and 22 mpg city/30 mpg
hwy with all-wheel drive.
Optional on the SE and SEL and
standard on Titanium models is a
2.0-liter
EcoBoost
turbocharged
4-cylinder engine with an impressive
240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, and fuel
economy of 22 mpg city/30 mpg hwy
with front-wheel drive and 21 mpg
city/28 mpg hwy with all-wheel drive.
Premium fuel is recommended for
the EcoBoost engines. Using regular
fuel will slightly reduce power to
compensate for the lower-octane mix.
Standard Features & Options
The 2014 Ford Escape is offered in
three trims -- S, SE and Titanium.
The base Escape S ($23,595) includes
cruise control, air conditioning, a rear
windshield wiper, a rearview camera,
the SYNC voice-command system,
Bluetooth, a 6-speaker stereo with
an auxiliary input jack, the MyKey
programmable key fob (which lets
parents set limits on radio volume and

top speed) and 17-inch steel wheels

with plastic covers.
The SE ($26,445) adds 17-in alloy
wheels, exterior keypads for the door
locks, satellite radio, a power driver
seat with lumbar adjustment, heated
front seats, reclining rear seats, fog
lights, automatic headlights and the
turbocharged
1.6-liter
EcoBoost
engine. Options for the SE include
a panoramic glass moonroof, voiceactivated navigation, a power cargo
door with motion-sensing activation,
18-in alloy wheels, dual-zone
automatic climate controls, upgraded
Sync with AppLink smartphone
integration, and MyFord Touch with
an 8-in touchscreen, a 9-speaker audio
upgrade, dual USB ports and an SD
card reader.
The Titanium ($29,995) tacks on most
of the SE's standard and optional
niceties along with keyless entry/start
and Sony audio with 10 speakers.
Options include the 2.0-liter EcoBoost
engine, parking sensors, bi-xenon
headlights and a blind-spot warning
system with cross-traffic alert. The
Titanium can also be equipped with a
nifty automated self-parking system
that takes the guesswork (and effort)
out of parallel parking.
All-wheel drive, available on SE and
Titanium, costs an extra $1,750.
Safety
Every 2014 Escape has Ford's Personal
Safety System and Safety Canopy
System, which includes side-impact
airbags in front, side-curtain airbags
and a driver-knee airbag. Four-wheel
anti-lock disc brakes with stability
control help keep the Escape moving
in the direction you intend even when
things get slippery.
The Escape earned four out of five stars
in government crash tests, including
four stars for frontal impacts and five
stars for side impacts.
Behind the Wheel
The 2014 Escape's body is rigid and
tight over bumps, without any squeaks
or rattles. The seats feel a bit narrow
but are supportive and comfortable. At
highway speeds, the Escape's cabin is
remarkably quiet.
The Escape's taut suspension settings
give this little SUV a sporty demeanor,
not unlike the related Focus hatchback.
We like the ride on the SE and SEL,
but found the Titanium's larger 19-in
wheels had a tendency to magnify road
imperfections.
The base 2.5-liter engine is competent
enough, but it's the EcoBoost engines
that really make the Escape zip along.
We found the 1.6-liter engine more than
satisfying in both its power delivery
and fuel consumption. The Titanium's
optional 2.0-liter turbo is a brute, and
those accustomed to having a V6 will
want this option.
Other Cars to Consider
Honda CR-V -- Considered by many
to be the gold standard in compact
crossovers, the CR-V has a welldeserved reputation for reliability and

resale, two areas where the new Escape

has yet to prove itself. While the CR-V
can't compete with the Escape's engine
and technology offerings, even a fully
loaded EX-L model barely crosses the
$30,000 mark.
Toyota RAV4 -- The RAV4 has more
interior room and there's even an allelectric model, the RAV4 EV (based
on the old RAV4). The RAV4 is also
projected to hold its value better
than the Escape, and it gets better
fuel economy in the city. Although it
doesn't offer as many options, a loaded
RAV4 Limited costs thousands less
than a well-equipped Escape SEL or

Titanium.
Subaru Forester -- The Forester doesn't
handle as well as the Escape, but its
resale numbers still trump just about
everything in this class. The Forester's
turbo model has even more power than
the Escape's 2.0-liter.
AutoTrader's Advice
While we love all the extra tech goodies
in the Titanium model, its price seems
at odds with the reason most people
buy a smaller SUV: affordability. We
think the SE trim with the 1.6-liter
EcoBoost engine is the best choice.
Adding all-wheel drive still keeps the
price well under $30,000.

Desjardins Could Be A Fit As Canucks Head Coach

Vancouver Canucks' president of

hockey operations Trevor Linden starts
the interview process this week to find
a head coach for his NHL club.
Willie Desjardins and John Stevens are
the early favourites to replace the fired
John Tortorella and Mike Sullivan.
However, Linden must wait to
approach Desjardins and John Stevens
because they're in the AHL and NHL
playoffs respectively with the Texas
Stars and Los Angeles Kings.
Add the fact that former Nashville
Predators' coach Barry Trotz has signed
with the Washington Capitals and the
Desjardins drumming just got louder.
At 57, Desjardins has yet to run an
NHL bench but that won't keep him
from serious consideration here. The
career numbers are outstanding - a 4818-3-7 AHL record this season - and
two titles in eight WHL seasons with
the Medicine Hat Tigers as coach and
general manager from 2002-10.
He was also on the coaching staff
of Canada's world junior teams in
2009-10, winning gold and silver
respectively, and coached in Japan and
at the University of Calgary. At the pro
level, he's developed prospects and got
the crucial buy-in from veterans. And if
the Canucks start the season with seven
players north of 30, that motivational

element will be vital.

"You obviously have to turn to your room
sometimes and he did a great job with
that," says Vern Fiddler, who has played
for Desjardins and Trotz previously.
"He respected our opinions, and when
he was running our penalty kill, he
would definitely consider them. He
didn't have an ego that it was going to
be his way or no way. It was always
the collective of what can we do to be

better? He did what was best and wants

to be an NHL head coach. You've seen
what he's done with that (AHL) team.
He's taken them from the bottom of the
barrel to the top now - and he's getting
the success he deserves."
He did it the old fashioned way.
Desjardins played Junior A in Moose
Jaw and Swift Current, two seasons
with Lethbridge of the WCHL, played
for Dave King at the University of

Saskatchewan and then spent a year in

Holland before coaching.
Linden plans to travel the same
selection route that he did to hire
general manager Jim Benning.
"It's building a profile and a criteria of
what that person is and what we want in
that person, and we're going to decide
that first," Linden said. "We're going to
have a comprehensive list of questions
and dig into those areas that we need
to dig into. "Ultimately, that alignment
between Jim, myself and the coach has
to be completely in line or it's going to
be problematic."
It's customary for a general manager
to hire coaches, so Benning will have
a lot of input, and if he's looking for
familiarity, he could appoint Bruins'
assistant coach Doug Houda as an
associate coach.
What about the head guy? "This
organization needs to play an uptempo,
fast skating and skilled game," said
Benning. "Before last season, this team
had a relentless attitude that they were
going to skate and wear teams down
and score. I hope we hire the right
coach and recapture that."
He then said it was imperative that the
new coach be a proven winner but not
necessarily at the NHL headcoaching level.
Sounds a lot like Desjardins.

Canucks Only Way Forward Is A Return To The Vigneault Way Of

Deploying Speed And Depth
Earlier in the Eastern Conference final,
when the New York Rangers looked
a lot more comfortable than they do
today, Rangers defenceman Anton
Stralman was asked to compare life
with Alain Vigneault after life with
John Tortorella.
See if this strikes a chord, Canucks
fans.
He changed quite a bit, Stralman said
of Vigneault. Were not as defensive
as we were last year. Weve got more
freedom offensively and defensively.
But the biggest thing is we play a little
faster, a little more unpredictable.
Actually, the biggest thing is the
Rangers are one win away from the
Stanley Cup final playing according to
Vigneaults dictates, while Tortorella
has left behind two dumpster fires in
his last two postings.
Vigneault and Tortorella, it seems,
couldnt be farther apart stylistically,
philosophically or in their personalities.
Couldnt be farther apart in the results
they deliver, either.
In a spring that has produced a handful
of memorable series, CanadiensRangers now ranks with any of them
and while its difficult to assess
who has the momentum after the
Canadiens wild win in Game 5, the

Rangers are at home and theyve got

Henrik Lundqvist for Thursday nights
Game 6. The Habs, for their part, have
a little pixie dust going for them, but
no matter what happens through the
duration of this series, Canucks fans
have to be struck by the similarities
between the current Rangers team and
Vigneaults 2011 Canucks team.
In Vancouver, Vigneault somehow
got stuck with the reputation he was
obsessed with defence, which is pretty
funny considering the Canucks led the
Western Conference in goals scored
for three straight seasons from 2010 to
2012. The Canucks, at their best, played
a speed game predicated on skill and
puck movement, and they were never
better than they were in 2011. Sadly,
any discussion of that season now has
the ring of nostalgia, but that team left
behind some beautiful memories for
hockey fans in this province. Most
everyone has a personal favourite from
that Canuck spring. Mine was Alex
Burrowss overtime goal in Game 2
of the Cup final, when passes from
Alex Edler and Daniel Sedin sprung
Burrows in the time it takes most
people to sneeze.
Vigneaults Rangers team isnt as
prolific as the 2011 Canucks. But

the similarities are hard to miss. The

building blocks for the Rangers are
speed and depth, which was the precise
foundation of the Canucks. The Nux
might have had more top-end talent,
with the Sedins and Ryan Kesler
enjoying monster seasons, but when
you talked to people around the league
that season, invariably they identified
the Canucks depth as their strength.
They had four lines, at least they did
until Manny Maholtra got hurt. When
their blueline was healthy, Sami Salo
was their fifth-best defender. With that
lineup, they came at the opposition
in waves and most nights it was
something to see.
Now, the Rangers arent a carbon
copy of that Canucks team, but the
Blueshirts can roll four lines with three
sets of defencemen and there isnt a
huge dropoff from their best forward to
their fourth line. Thats also reflected
in the ice times, where no forward has
averaged more than 20 minutes a game
in the playoffs but nine are averaging
14:37 per game or more.
Compare that, if you will, to Tortorellas
deployment of his forwards this season,
when Kesler and the twins all averaged
more than 20 minutes a game. The
Canucks were the only team in the

NHL who could make that claim. Then

again, they were the only team that
went from third in their conference to
12th.
As for what approach works best in
todays NHL, the records of the two
teams make the case eloquently, and
that brings us around to the course the
Canucks will set for next season.
New general manager Jim Benning
wasnt exactly an open book in his
introductory presses, but he did
promise the Canucks would return to
the principles of the Vigneault era. The
former Bruins assistant GM, in fact,
wondered aloud what had happened to
the team Boston had played in the 2011
final the team that played with so
much flair and confidence just a couple
of seasons ago.
We need to get back to what were
good at and this organization needs to
play an uptempo, fast-skating game,
Benning said. Before last season,
this team had an attitude, a relentless
attitude, that they were going to skate
and wear teams down. For whatever
reason, that didnt happen last year,
but Im hoping we can hire the right
coach and we can recapture that going

John Weisbrod Has Worked With The NHL And NBA Teams,
He Could Be A Good Fit With Canucks At Some Capacity

The rumour has been out there for

more than a week.
John Weisbrod is going to join the
Canucks at some point in some
capacity because the former pro scout
and director of collegiate scouting
for the Boston Bruins has an obvious
connection with new Vancouver
general manager Jim Benning.
If the gig is assistant general manager, the
Canucks already have Lorne Henning
and Laurence Gilman serving in that
role. Henning is also vice-president
of player personnel and Gilman vicepresident of hockey operations and a
troika of AGMs seems unlikely and
unworkable. Hence, some suspense.
At Bennings introductory press
conference, Canucks president of
hockey operations Trevor Linden said
he was unaware of the Weisbrod rumour
and didnt know where it came from.
It came from the Twitter account of @
TSNBobMcKenzie and his reputation
for inside information has created a
level of curiosity. Linden did say that
Benning will have the autonomy to
set his management group, but the
immediate focus is the NHL scouting
combine that concludes Saturday in
Toronto. Its also where hockey people
cross paths.
He (Benning) is going to take some
time and well work through it and at the
end of the day, hes got to have people
who work best with him and he feels
good with, said Linden. I think they
(Henning, Gilman) are good people,
good hockey people. Obviously, Jim
is going to shape this organization.
We have some important decisions to
make from a personnel standpoint to
see if we have the right pieces in place
in the hockey operations department.
I feel strongly about the people in
place and Jims skill set is a great fit for
that group. Ultimately hell have his

John Weisbrod has worked with the NHLs Sabres, Flames, Stars and Bruins,
but he made his first mark in the NBA as Orlando Magic general manager
own ideas and beliefs and well work
to make sure we achieve that vision.
Youd think Benning would at least
kick the tires hard on Weisbrod
because of his pro-scouting input with
the Bruins and the college talent he
scouted. Asked if hell add to his staff,
Benning was noncommittal on his first
day on the job last week and chose to
focus on whats in place. Weisbrod
didnt return a call from The Province
on Wednesday.
Our executive team has unique skill
sets and theyre good at what they do,
said Benning. Im looking forward to
working with them.
Weisbrod, 45, a former Calgary Flames
assistant general manager and player
personnel director, who was dismissed
in December, also did a nice job at the
2013 NHL draft table who wouldnt
with three-first-round picks? and
Sean Monahan was a home run with

the sixth choice. He finished fourth

in rookie goals this season with 22
despite Calgarys 23rd-ranked offence
and 24th-ranked power play.
However, its what the Flames did with
their next pick that opened some eyes.
Instead of taking homegrown winger
Hunter Shinkaruk at No. 22, they opted
for QMJHL winger Emile Poirier. Two
inches taller than Shinkaruk at 6-foot1, a lot faster and a little heavier, there
was little choose statistically between
the pair at the draft. The Canucks chose
Shinkaruk at No.24 and he was limited
to five goals in 18 games this WHL
season before hip surgery. And while
its much too early to project the pair
as pros, Poirier had 43 goals and 129
points with Gatineau this season
including a league-leading eight shorthanded goals and then four points in
his first two games with the Abbotsford
Heat. He also had added a goal in three

AHL playoff games and has already

signed an entry-level deal with the
Flames.
Shinkaruk will probably need another
year of seasoning with Medicine Hat
before challenging for a Canucks roster
spot. The Flames selected Morgan
Klimchuk with the 28th overall pick in
2013 and the Regina Pats winger had
30 goals and 74 points in 57 games. He
also played four games with the Heat.
Benning, a former director of amateur
scouting for the Buffalo Sabres, has
vowed to give his Canuck scouts
direction and its going to be interesting
how it all plays out especially
after Linden recently gave chief
amateur scout Ron Delorme a vote of
confidence. Weisbrod could help the
Canucks in a number of capacities.
After a season of scouting for the Dallas
Stars, Weisbrod joined the Bruins as a
pro scout in September, 2006 and after
two years became the clubs director
of collegiate scouting for three years.
During his tenure, the Bruins acquired
collegiate defenceman Matt Bartkowski
and blue-liner Dennis Seidenberg in
2010 from Florida in exchange for
Byron Bitz, Craig Weller and a secondround draft pick. They traded for
Gregory Campbell in the same year
after landing Johnny Boychuk in 2008
and Adam McQuaid in 2007.
What does this all mean? Weisbrod
wasnt afraid to suggest moves and
make them. And even though he was
drafted in the fourth round by the
Minnesota North Stars in 1987, the
Syosset, N.Y., native made his first
mark in the NBA.
As general manager of the Orlando
Magic, he fired Doc Rivers and moved
the disgruntled Tracy McGrady in a
seven-player swap with the Houston
Rockets. It led to written death threats
from fans.

Deploying Speed And Depth

forward.
They should throw the man a parade
for that statement alone.
How the Canucks return to that game
is the next question, and thats where
things get tricky. While the best teams
in the West Los Angeles, Chicago,
Anaheim, San Jose have augmented
their core with youth and speed, the
Canucks added just one player of note
Cody Hodgson who turned into

Zack Kassian in four drafts between

07 and 2010. Theres some help
coming but the Canucks youngsters are
still likely two, three years away from
making an impact on the team.
In the meantime, the organization has
started back on the road they turned
away from this season. That happens
to be the same road Vigneault is still
travelling, and its heading right to the
Stanley Cup final.
