Host Every business has it's own style. What is the office environment and culture like at
Motorola?
Are people dressed in business casual, jeans and t-shirts, or full-on suits? Do folks get
together for Friday happy hours and friendly get-togethers?
What is a typical day in the life of an employee at Motorola?

High Tech, High Stress environment with good people expected to contribute in excess of 40
hours a week with no compensation or overtime pay. The company has been in what seems
like a constant re-org since mid 90s with increasing move of many engineering jobs to
overseas locations like India, Eastern Europe, China.

I spent a year with Motorola.
The CEO is trying to change the culture. One of this refrains is "there is one Motorola." This
is a hope to merge all the varous firms they have acquired in recent years.
In fact, my group was never mergered. One reason I was let go was that I was "Motorola" not
"General Instruments."
To directly answer your question. I wore Dockers most days. Friday is jeans day and my
boss felt that mean he HAD to wear jeans.
I agree with the comments about stress.
People tend not to get together for happy hours. On the other hand, there was a lot of travel;
in my group, at my level 30%. I spent a fair amount of time with folks in hotel bars.
To borrow a line from Hunter Thompson, there is a lot of "fear and loathing" in the part of
Motorola I was with.

a fellow former motorolan said it best - "Ten of the best years of my life were with motorola
and i was with motorola for thirteen years" it is just not the same company it used
to be. the company used to treat their workforce as an investment. training was encouraged
and in some ways compulsory. the thought was gaining skills meant gaining value for the

company and at the end of the day all would win. then panic struck and motorola went
hollywood. the drive for things like six sigma was replaced with the drive to be "wicked cool!"
- and the workforce became a commodity of expense as opposed to an investment of asset.
bottom line is unless you are the guy (or gal) designing the next razr, you are - in all matters
of the phrase - a replacable cog in the machine and there is a team of people likely meeting
right now somewhere on algonquin road looking for cheaper cogs. it breaks my heart to say
this, but it must be said. this used to be a great company ran by great people. now it is
merely the shadow of what was once a great company being picked over by vultures hoping
to cash in. if you want to work there - more power to ya. but it is what it is.

I am so stressed by observing my husband coming home at 11pm! I am so stressed by
observing him loosing sleep, getting health problems, and becoming depressed. I am so tired
of endless stories about suspicious relationship between his supervisor and another female
co-worker, who are putting the entire working load on my husband. I am so surprised that the
entire department is making fun of the latter situation, but nobody reveals the truth being
afraid of loosing employment.
I am so disgusted that the company that once appeared for me as one of the best business
leaders and which I wished to be my husband's employer has turned into horror of our family
life.

My husband currently works at Motorola, and this place is CRAZY! In March of 2007, when
raises were due, they sent an email, yes an email, stating that raises for all employees were
going to be withheld for 3 months due to financial reasons. They used to be a good
company, but they continue to cut benefits (although they are still better than most
companies benefits), threaten to outsource your job or lay you off, expect 60 plus hours a
week, and quite frankly don't stand behind there people. The management treats employees
horrible, and expect them just to take it because "we are motorola" and "the greatest". To
anyone considering a job there, I would say take it with the idea that you could be laid off at
anytime, and don't ever plan on getting too secure in your position.

Working for Motorola for last 20 yrs. It was great company to work for. But things have gone
right down the drain since 2002. Since Chris Galvin left the company it seem successive
managements have just progressively removed the "Galvin Family Way" of treating
employees. Consistently weening out of older higher paid long time employees and replacing
them with newer lower paid employees. We had a management that unfortunately took on
GE's Jack Welches terrible Rank & Yank employee ranking system which absolutely gutted
the company and reduced employee moral to zero. Rank & Yank is a sad corporate rating
process that enables the company to justify Age discrimination and just get people off the
payroll for little or no costs etc. It's has built in 5% wastage, i.e. Managers need to mark at
least 5% of people to be ranked at the lower level "needing Improvement" if this happens a
couple of years running you're out the door. In my mind it also ensuring no one will ever
become a long time employee. In 2000 we had 160,000 employees, had sales of 32 billion
and made a profit. This year we have 65,000 employees, had 42 billion in sales and made a
loss. Go figure, successive managements have just gone from bad to worst. Corporate are
so out of touch with reality it is just amazing. Employee moral is the lowest I have ever seen
it. This year we had cuts in Health Benefits, a 3 month delay in paying out our salary
increase. I went to HR with some complaints and asking them to start a web site for
employees to give free and unfettered feedback. What a waste of time, I was told it would not
happen, just to shut it, as they did not want feedback, that I was just a number on the payroll

to corporate. We now have so much red tape it takes me 40% of my time keeping up with
that. I recently did 8 compulsory web training sessions (amazingly one was about handling
distraught employees), and I was censored as I missed one.(The Mgrs gets their full bonus if
everyone does them.)

I did Mot for nearly 10 years in FL08 and it has all the earmarks of a company going down
the drain. Outsourcing itself to death, alienating the talent, rewarding the sycophants. What
a wreck. I made some good money but had to leave before it imploded. Another note; if you
do IT work there it does NOT translate to any other industry or region. It's a career toilet.

I was working for Motorola until I was told my probation has been cut short. Work ethics and
attitude absolutely stinks with no respect or support for colleagues. Company is on a
complete downhill and expect miracles when no stocks are available in stores across the
country. They treat their staffs ridiculously rude and every employee at motorola who has a
slight upper position thinks they are above everybody else and under estimate their
colleagues. A company which is in a dead end position with no marketing or products in
stores do really think they can continue to operate like this. Other companies such as
Samsung/Sony and leading brands do not treat employees with rudeness or remarks to
knock thier confidence as i have friends who work at these companies and love the working
envirament. I have worked for other companies in the same industry and never faced this sort
of arrogance and poor training with thier appalling attitudes. Anyone considering working for
them I would strongly advise for them to think twice as everyday would turn into a absolute
nightmare!

I have worked at Motorola for 10 years and I am so glad that I left. The first 3 were the nice
years back in early 2000. The last 3 were down right abusive. I am talking about long long
(long) hours. Spending 10 hours at work and still need to answer emails in real time at night
and weekends. This can easily add up to 60 hours a week. Also, the pay scale at Motorola
is about 10-20% below industry standard. The worst thing is the company is acting they are
doing you a favor and treating you like they you. The last few years I felt like I was a slave to
the company. I am not kidding. Also, I recall from one conference call, a big manager said
"Everyone is expected to work 7 days a week". I am sure the big manager went straight to
the golf course right afterwards. Even with Google taking over the mobility side of the
company, the culture did not change. People at HR were actually looking for their own exit
strategy. The fact that Google is the parent company does not mean anything. We were
treated as second class employee. No Google benefits, No Google pay scale. Meanwhile,
we have to do everything to please the management and the customers. If you are looking to
find a job at Motorola, I would suggest you negotiate for market pay scale and make sure
your manager knows that you are not a slave labor. If you are wiser, I would suggest you
look for employment else where. On the other hand, I felt bad for some of my coworkers who
are still there. A good amount of them are trapped. I mean because of their visa status, they
can't move to other jobs freely. Motorola knows that. The ironic thing is when green card
sponsor goes through the engineer usually leaves shortly after.

I worked in Plantation, Florida (FL08) for 15 years and quit in 2013 after being treated like a
dog by a manager who plays favorites. It is a horrible place to work unless you play the
cronyism game. Management pretends to care about employees by asking for feedback but
nothing improves - unrealistic expectations by engineers promoted into management
because of friendships. These "managers" have no MBA, no formal training and little
experience. The experienced engineers are not valued. Expect to be forced out before you
reach 50 - if you make it that far. Management prefers to send work to Penang and Chengdu
rather than here. And they are far behind other companies in terms of technology and
