Ryuta Long time no see, sis.
Sis Ryuta! When did you come home?
Ryuta This morning. I went into a diner, saw Sakura, and then came straight here. How are you?
Sis Getting better.
Ryuta Have you been getting the money okay?
Sis Yes. Thank you.
Ryuta Is the rehabilitation going well?
Sis Yes. Im doing my best. Ryuta, why did you leave town right after the accident? I needed you.
Ryuta Sorry. Im really sorry. But, I thought we needed money. I knew we needed a lot.
Sis The accident was not your fault, Ryuta. You have to stop blaming yourself...
Ryuta But, if I had been driving, everyone would have surely been okay. Dad, mom, and that family
wouldnt have died, and you wouldnt have gotten injured.
Sis No, lets stop this already. There is no use talking about what has already happened. Though, you
have been working so hard to send me money. Im sorry.
Ryuta Its alright, you just think about getting better, sis. Im not going anywhere, so relax.
Today`s frst grammar point is the -tara conjunction (conditional), which is used to indicate that an action
or state expressed in the subordinate clause occurs or may occur (conditional) before the one(s) expressed
in the main clause. Which meaning is being expressed can only be derived from the context of the sentence.
In todays lesson, there were two -tara conjunctions, one exemplifying the completion of an action, and the
other exemplifying an impossible past conditional.
Pattern:
S
1
tara S
2
(Subordinate clause) tara (main clause)
Formation:
(V/Adj-i/N,Adj-na+Copula) inf.past +ra

Todays second grammar point is zu ni, which means without doing something, as in do an action without
doing something (e.g. go to sleep without eating). This formation has the same meaning as nai de in most
cases, and is formed by adding zu to the plain negative stem.
Class Plain form Plain negative stem -zu
I nomu noma noma:u
I aru ara* arazu
II taberu tabe tabezu
III suru se* sezu
III kuru ko kozu
*suru and aru are conjugated abnormally here
While it is used in conversations, zu ni is often used in rather formal speech or written J apanese.
Examples:
|.,
Tabezu ni neru.
Go to sleep without eating.
)|'.|.),
Kikoku sezu ni Nihon ni nokotta.
Stay in J apan without return to ones country.
