IV. Word Problems.
1. The sum of the digits of a 2-digit number is 5 more than twice the tens digit. If the digits are
reversed, a new number is formed which is 31 less than thrice the original number. Find the
original number.
2. The tens digit of a number is four more than the units digit. The sum of the squares of the two
digits is 26. Find the number.
3. The numerator of a positive fraction is 5 more than thrice its denominator. If 13 is added to
the denominator and 9 is subtracted from the numerator, the resulting fraction is twice the
reciprocal of the original fraction. What is the original fraction?
4. Richard could nish a job 4 hours longer than Henry. After Richard had been working for 2
hours, Henry joined him and they completed the remaining portion after 4 hours. How long
would it take Richard to do the job if he worked alone?
5. A chemist prepares 2 iodine solutions, A and B, of dierent concentrations. When she mixes 3
liters of solution A to 2 liters of solution B, she gets 64% solution iodine. When 1 liter of solution
A is mixed to 4 liters of solution B, she gets only a concentration of 48%. Find the resulting
iodine concentration should she wish to mix 2 liters of solution A and 3 liters of solution B.
