Use hand tools

Assessment of this unit applies to the use of various hand tools, including but not limited to
hacksaws, hammers, punches, screwdrivers, sockets, wrenches, scrapers, chisels, gouges,
wood planes and files of all cross-sectional shapes and types.
Assessment may apply to work undertaken autonomously or in a team environment using
predetermined standards of quality, safety and workshop procedures.
Applications may include hand tools used for adjusting, dismantling, assembling and
finishing of items or components and the finishing, cutting and scraping of metallic and nonmetallic material to size and shape.
This unit should not be selected if the hand tool is dedicated to a single operation or machine
and if only a machine-specific/customised tool is used.
This unit may be assessed on or off the job or in a combination of both on and off the job.

identifying common faults and/or defects in hand tools and following the procedures for
marking unsafe or faulty tools
Oral questioning
Oral questioning is a useful way of checking knowledge, areas that are not directly
observed, and what if? situations. In this unit, oral questioning may be used to assess:

identifying the outcomes and job specifications to be achieved by the use of hand tools
Documentary evidence
Documentary evidence may include:
duty statements (provided these show clear links to the relevant units)
resumes (provided these show clear links to the relevant units and can be verified
independently)

This unit may be assessed in conjunction with any other units addressing the safety, quality,
communication, materials handling, recording and reporting associated with the use of hand tools or
other units requiring the exercise of the skills and knowledge covered by this unit.
