The Evesham Celebrations
Foundation, the non-profit organ-

once again hosted the annual

Now in its sixth year, the Taste
saw more than a dozen exhibits
featuring local cuisine, beer and
wine tasting, cooking demonstra-
tions and other live entertain-
ment.
One Evesham resident at the
event sampling the delicacies was
Mayor Randy Brown. Having es-
tablished the Evesham Celebra-
tions Foundation, Brown said he
couldnt be prouder of the mem-
bers and volunteers for all the
hard work they put into making
events possible.
This is our sixth year doing
this, Brown said. It gets better

ty turns out and has a chance to

event had good turnout
like Ive preached from day one
since 2007, if you create commu-
nity events, people will come to
them, and they continue to show
it today.
Deputy Mayor Ken D'Andrea,
also a member of the celebrations
foundation, echoed Browns senti-
ments. He said the idea to do a
taste event came from wanting to
replicate similar events, but with
a distinctive Evesham twist.
We do it with our twist and
our added flair, and when we do
our events, we do them right,
DAndrea said. We do them with
a high degree of professionalism,
high degree of volunteerism, and
we usually do a pretty good job.
You see the thousands of people
come in on a regular basis for this
event and its all good.
Attending the event for a sec-
ond year was resident James
Moyer and his wife Meredith. He
said it was good to support local
businesses and wished more
towns would do it.
Its good, a lot of good restau-
rants, Moyer said. Its a nice
day after the long winter to get
out and enjoy the good weather
and the good food.
Moyers pick of the day was
Sals Pizzaworks.
Well go with Sals Pizza,
Moyer said. I enjoyed Sals Pizza.
They just make a good pizza,
thats all.
Anthony Rotondi, manager
and owner of Sals Pizzaworks,
said for what they were doing,
they were having a hard time
keeping up, so it seemed liked
they were doing very well at the
event.
Its very busy, Rotondi said.
Big turnout. It gets our food out
there. I think a lot of people from
out of Marlton come, so its nice
to get past our regular customers.
Although we love our regular cus-
tomers, too, dont get me wrong
on that. Its good exposure I be-
lieve.
One attendee from outside
Marlton was John Krewer. Krew-
er grew up in South Jersey but
now works as a police officer in
Philadelphia, and only found out
about the festival as he was driv-
ing through town.
I didnt even know about it,
Krewer said. I actually drove by
and saw it and stopped. Its actual-
ly a really fun time. It seems very
community oriented. It benefits
the businesses in the community.
Its very community friendly.
One business benefited by the
event was Cicontes Italia Pizze-
ria. General manager Frank
Simon said he thought the event
had a good turnout, and it was
a great way to get exposure and
to get people to try Cicontes
food.
Its definitely important for
the business, Simon said. We
just want to let people in Marlton
know we got good stuff and we re-
ally take pride in our food and our
preparationwe want to give
them a good product. Thats why
were here today.

Student volunteer
winners announced
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Four years ago, Cherokee High
School student Nick Musulin had
a goal of getting involved in com-
munity service in his school. In
his time, he forged a relationship
with St. Jude Childrens Research
Hospital, established partner-
ships with area businesses and
raised more than $20,000 for the
charity.
On Wednesday night, the dis-
trict gave back to Musulin for his
years of hard work.
Musulin was named the Chero-
kee winner of the Student Volun-
teer Award, an annual recogni-
tion given to one student at each
Lenape district high school who
went above and beyond perform-
ing service in the community. The
other three award winners were
Lenape High School's Craig Cas-
sidy, Shawnee High School's
Abbey Wiker and Seneca High
School's Shawn Tuman.
For Musulin, the ceremony
was a culmination of four years
of hard work and determination.
He let rejection after rejection for
his school fundraising event blow
right by and eventually started a
head-shaving fundraiser event,
with proceeds going toward St.
Jude's. The event debuted in 2012
and has now become a fixture on
the Cherokee calendar.
We were able to partner with
the Philadelphia Flyers,
Musulin said. We were able to
get businesses and celebrities in-
volved.
Each of the district's four hon-
orees received their award for dif-
ferent accomplishments, but they
each had something in common.
District director of programs and
planning Chris Heilig said all
four recipients accumulated
more than 300 hours of service
each. All four were not only in-
volved in clubs in their school
community, but also reached out
and served within their respec-
tive towns.
Wiker provided a good example
of performing service outside
school grounds. The Shawnee stu-

Community turns out for clean up
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The New Jersey Clean Communities
program once again lived up to its name
when, on May 17, about 20 residents of Eve-
sham came out to the Black Run Preserve
to help clean up a section of their commu-
nity.
The volunteers spent three hours, from 9
a.m. to noon, removing old tires, cigarette
butts, cement and various other pieces of
litter strewn throughout the Black Run.
New Jersey Clean Communities is the
state-funded program that gives money to
counties and communities to promote
keeping local areas free of trash by provid-
ing mini-grants to various local groups to
aide them in their cleanup efforts.
Evesham Clean Communities coordina-
tor Debbie Pease was on hand at the
cleanup event. She said the township has 22
clean communities groups, although the
May 17 event was a strictly volunteer event
comprised of an assortment of volunteers
who were there only for their own desire to
help keep the Black Run clean.
The Boy Scouts, the Garden Club, it
helps to fund these groups that might not
be in existence if they didnt have a little
bit of funding, Pease said. Its not a
whole lot, but it helps them. Its hard eco-
nomic times, so it helps keep those groups
that we want in our community here and
able to survive. So its a really good pro-
gram. Its a win-win. We get our roads
clean, they get a little funding, and every-
bodys happy.
Also at the cleanup was John Volpa,
founder and chair of the Friends of the
Black Run Preserve, the organization of
volunteers formed to protect the ecology
and beauty of the Black Run.
As volunteers arrived, Volpa directed
them toward different areas that needed
the most attention. He said the preserve,
consisting of wetlands, forest, streams and
bogs, has regularly been used as a place to
illegally dispose of waste.
This place has been a dumping ground
for a long, long time, and unfortunately it
still is because access is still not closed off,
please see VOLPA, page 7
W
elcome to the beach! Were
so glad you came. I see you
have six people in your
party this afternoon. Will that be
smoking or non-smoking?
Remember that question smoking
or non-smoking? Seems like ages ago
that, every time you went out to eat,
the hostess at your favorite restaurant
would ask you that question.
Would you like to negatively im-
pact your health and those around
you, or would you like to breathe un-
sullied air? Maybe that would have
been a better question.
Now, it seems like that question
might be back again, but at a different
place than you might think outside
of all places, at the beach.
Last week, a state Senate committee
approved a bill that would ban smok-
ing at beaches and public parks
throughout the state. The committee
amended the bill, which the state As-
sembly passed in March, to add a sec-
tion to allow towns to set aside up to 20
percent of a beach or park as a smok-
ing area.
Yep. A smoking area. Outside.
Seems funny, doesnt it?
New Jersey, like the country as a
whole, is taking a major step to control
smoking, even though it isnt a con-
trolled substance. And good for New
Jersey.
Studies continue to show or,
rather, they show even more so how
harmful second-hand smoke is, and as
such, it is right and proper for govern-
ment entities to further control when
and where smoking can occur.
Smoking is still legal in the state, of
course, so basically, New Jersey is tak-
ing the stance that it doesnt care if
you harm yourself as long as you
dont harm others.
Good for New Jersey, and good for
every other place that is passing simi-
lar bills.
People who travel to the beach, a
playground or a park do so to enjoy the
outdoors in all its glory. Nearby smok-
ing, to non-smokers, can ruin that ex-
perience and affect their health. It is
only right and fair, then, that our gov-
ernment protects non-smokers from
that which is harmful to them and in
which they are choosing not to partici-
pate.
Now if only tobacco wasnt such a
big business and didnt bring us so
much tax revenue, we could outlaw it
all together.
Smoking or non-smoking?
Thats a question that you could be asked once again

expansion of smoking bans? Share your

Volpa to present
to council during
final May meeting
Volpa said. Theres a section I
didnt send anyone to because its
piles of landscaping trash that
someone has figured out that they
can just drive in with their truck
and just slide it off and it contin-
ues.
Volpa said he and FBRP have
been working toward a concept
plan to help improve the 1,300-
acre Black Run that he was sched-
uled to present to the Evesham
Township Council during its final
meeting in May.
We got some grant money last
year, had a visioning event, had a
community day event which was
also connected to a cleanup, led
hikes, and we put together with
professional trail planners a con-
cept plan for the Black Run Pre-
serve, Volpa said. As you can
see, we need a safe parking lot,
trailheads and the concept plan is
done, and now its time to present
it to mayor and council.
One volunteer at the event,
Kevin Basile, said hes participat-
ed in various cleanups in the area
before, and he uses the Black Run
trails with his wife and dog so he
likes to also help keep them clean.
He said hes always pleased to
see people take an interest in pre-
serving the open space around
them.
Its always interesting to me
how many people are always here
when I come, Basile said. Its
nice to see that a decent amount
of people care about maintaining
trails. We live in a very suburban
area where there isnt that much
free space, so its nice to see peo-
ple taking an interest in the free
spaces that we have and being re-
sponsible with them.

SUNDAY June 1
Life at an Edwardian Manor
(Inspired by Downton Abbey):
Adult: 2 p.m. Evesham Library at
984 Tuckerton Road. The critical-
ly acclaimed TV Series, Downton
Abbey, has renewed popular
interest in the Edwardian era,
when King Edward VII reigned in
the United Kingdom. It was a time
of great disparity between the
haves and the have-nots. Wealthy
aristocrats owned huge manor
houses, and reveled in luxury,
leisure, and extravagant enter-
taining. The rich expected their
every whim to be indulged, and
all their daily needs to be fulfilled,
by the lower class of domestic
servants. This Golden Age,
which was a reaction to the Victo-
rian era (and actually began in
the late 19th century), perched on
a shaky foundation as the winds
of change brought a time of
greater social mobility within the
rigid British class system. Come
learn about this fascinating time
and the people who lived in it.
Though you don't have to be a
"Downton Abbey" fan to enjoy
this program, devoted fans may
take more notice of certain
details in the show after attend-
ing. Light refreshment will be
provided after the presentation.

All four award recipients are
heading off to college in the fall
dent led an effort to construct a
rain garden at the Vaughan Com-
munity House in Medford Lakes.
A video during the ceremony
filmed her and other Shawnee
students performing the work.
I was totally shocked, Wiker
said upon learning she won the
award. I was speechless. I didn't
think I was going to win it.
Tuman was honored by the
award, but left the audience with
words of encouragement. He
noted how one doesn't just need to
work at or attend one of the high
schools to get involved.
I think its amazing that,
where we live, you can serve, he
said.
The Lenape district also hon-
ored parent volunteers who
served the school district through
parent organizations. From
school bands to sports and robot-
ics teams, parents from all four
high schools were recognized
with certificates for their service.
As parents, youre our stu-
dents first teacher, Superintend-
ent Carol Birnbohm said. You
show what community service
looks like in action.
The recognition of the parents
is something the student award
winners recognized as well. Each
thanked their parents for their
guidance.
All four award recipients will
be graduating and heading to col-
lege in the fall. Musulin said he
wants to continue his involve-
ment in community service as he
heads to Indiana University.
Still, Wednesday night's cere-
mony is one he will never forget.
It's incredible, Musulin said.
It's amazing to be around some
of these other people who have
served their school.
