Wuthering Heights Comparison Paragraph

Heathcliff and Edgar were portrayed as two completely different people in the novel Wuthering
Heights, with only one similarity. The first difference between these two characters was their
appearance. Heathcliff was described as a dark skinned gipsey, whereas Edgar was Heathcliffs
opposite; light hair and fair skinned. But Mr. Heathcliff forms a singular contrast to his abode style of
living. He is a dark skinned gipsey in aspect, and dresses and manners a gentleman as many a country
squire; rather slovenly, perhaps looking amiss with his negligence, because he was an erect and
handsome figure; (Bronte 11). I wish I had light hair and fair skin, and was dressed and behaved, and
had a chance of being as rich as he would be! (Bronte 56) These quotes describe how Heathcliff was
described as a dark skinned gipsey, and envies Edgar because he was his opposite; light hair and fair
skinned. The second difference between Heathcliff and Edgar was their childhood, and where they grew
up. Heathcliff was originally an orphan who was adopted by Mr. Earnshaw, and grew up in Wuthering
Heights, and Edgar was a part of the Linton family and was brought up in Thrushcross Grange. She did
fly up, asking how he could bring that gipsey brat into the house, when they had their own bairns to
feed and fend for. (Bronte 41). Cathy and I escaped from the wash-house to have a ramble at liberty,
and getting a glimpse at grange lights, we thought we would go and see whether the Lintons passed
their Sunday evenings standing shivering in corners (Bronte 51) The first quote explains how
Heathcliff was brought to Wuthering Heights as a young child because he was an orphan, and the
second quote explains how Thrushcross Grange is home of the Linton family. The only similarity
between Heathcliff and Edgar in the novel wuthering heights is that Catherine loves both men. My love
for Heathcliff resembles the external rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight but necessary. Nelly,
I am Heathcliff! (Bronte 76) If thered be any, they are out of my way. Ive seen none like Edgar. You
may see some, but he wont always be as handsome, young, and may not always be as rich. (Bronte 80)
The first quote describes Catherines intense love for Heathcliff, and the second quote explains how
Catherine believes she loves Edgar, but suggests that she loves him because he is rich and handsome.
Wuthering Heights shows the reader that Heathcliff and Edgar were two completely different people,
especially when it comes to their appearance and where they grew up, but the novel also shows that the
only commonalty that these two men was the intense love Catherine had for both men.
