that the high percentage of runners completing ultras reects not the degree of
difculty so much as the h^avy experience, not to say, age and the general daft
ness of the handful who try such events.
Actually I think most ultra runners run all distances and are only unusual in
having discovered the special satisfactions of ultra events.
There is a satisfaction to be got from going further but the chief attraction of
the ultra lies in the different kind of challenge it represents. It requires a
differeent approach to shorter races, including the marathon.
The mai n thi ng i s that the ul tra i s much sl ower.
Ultras are endurance tests, rather than speed tests. It is signicant that the
U.S.A.*s fastest man at 10,000 metres on the track, and the second fastest at
5,000 metres, Aloerto Salazar, is also the world record holder for the marathon.
The marathon is a speed contest. Salazar's pace in his world record mar?thon was
4:54 per mile -only 10 per cent slower than the pace of his American record 10,000
metres on the track. Even at much lower levels of ability one nds the same 10
per cent difference between one person's best lOK and marathon pace. That's why
that marathon is a very demanding race. To run to your potential you must main
tain a pace only 10 per cent slower than your best lOK time over four times the
distance. For most of us this is very hard since it means going uncomfortably
fast from the start and trying to hold that pace.
That s why you should consider the ultra. Even the very best ultra men go much
slower than the best marathoners. The World and U.S. best for 50 miles on the
roads is Barney Klecker's 4:51:25. That's a mile pace of 5:50, a pace 19 per cent
slower than Salazar's record marathon pace. At distances beyond the marathon the
average pace falls off sharply. Its hardly surpirsing really since the body can
only store a strictly nite quantity of readily-convertible energy and there are
practical limitations to the number of training miles.
The ultra runner learns to maintain his effort over great distances (and time)
by carefully husbanding his strength and going slower.
There are several techniques for doing this according to the gurus of ultra
running. It is most comforting to know that walking -at planned intervals- is
considered perfectly okay -in fact is recommended for all but the elite class at
distances beyond lOOK.
You may have noticed that in this discussion I've mentioned the ultra mainly in
terms of 50 miles and up. Fifty miles races are easily the most popular ultras.
The 50K is comparatively rare. We are lucky to have one of the best ( a Met TAG
Championship) in our own back yard. Don't think that because Sybil is 31.1 miles
it isn't a real ultra. This is the course of which U.S.A.'s 24 hour recordholder,
Cahit Yeter, said "I've run races in 22 countries and this is the most difcult
c o u r s e I ' v e e v e r r u n . "
Running Sybil is a matter of control rather than speed. That makes it different
-not tougher- than shorter races. Plan your pace conservatively. You might even
try Walt Stack's approach: start slow and taper off. Or try a pace 19 percent
slower than your marathon standard. Start at a comfortable pace and continue that
way. This an event to savor. No hassle and crush at the start. You won't have
to tear along worrying about every second or every pitstop. After all, short stops
conserve your energy. And you will coast through some pretty scenery as
the countryside commences its Spring ourishes. Moving smoothly you listen to
your body. You plan your effort. At the marathon point you're still in control
and feeling strong. Now for a nal push on the last mostly downhill 4.9 miles.
Afraid of Sybil? No way. Control your pace and cruise to a happy rst ultra.

TRACK ETIQUETTE
The following pointers are reprinted from the Clifton Track Club
January, 1983 issue of their Newsletter. As many of you are either
beginning track work outs for the rst time or starting your annual
Spring interval training after a winter lay off, the following guidelines,
if followed will make your training safer and more enjoyable....as i^
doing intervals can be called enjoyable under the best conditions.
1. When there are many persons running on a track at the same time but over
different distances and at different paces, things can get crowded. To
avoid congestion, the universal custom among track runners is to allow the
persons actually working out to use the inside lanes. Jogging and walking
should be done to the outside, away from the curb at least two or three
lanes. NO WALKING IN THE INSIDE LANES.
2. Faster runners overtaking slower runners (or runners who are forget
fully walking in the inside lanes) use the word "TRACK!" to indicate that
a faster runner is approaching from behind. Track etiquette demands that
a walking or jogging runner in the inside two lanes get out of the way im
mediately by either stepping off the track to the inside or by moving out
to lane three. If you are actually running fast (for you) and faster run
ners approach from the rear and call "TRACK", the polite thing to do is
step off or movebut not to interfere with your own workout.
Sometimes a small knot of runners moving at a 6:00/mile pace will be
overtaken by faster runners running 440s (^ mile). The slower runners
should not continue to block the entire track; but need not give the entire
track in the middle of a part of their workout. Especially in the straight
aways, the polite thing to do is move out onto the line between lanes 1
and 2 and allow the faster runners to slip through on the inside.
3. The shortest way around the track is to the inside. One lap around
a 440 yard track in lane 2 takes 8 more yards than lane 1. If you are ru
running a series of repeats or laps with others, take turns using the
i n s i d e l a n e .
4. When you end a repeated distance you are tired; but remember that other
runners may be coming up right behind you. As you reach your nish point
look back and then move out to lane 3 to walk, jog and recover.
5. Avoid accidents. Always look for runner trafc before you cross the
t r a c k .
