Road for
justice

FIVE internal stitches and eight external stitches to her

knee didnt stop Noelle Dickson from joining Derryn Hinch
in his From Jail to Justice walk through Bacchus Marsh last
Thursday.
I just had to do it, Ms Dickson said.
I had a fall the week before and cant bend my knee. Derryn
insisted that I have a wheelchair and one of his volunteer
support crew went to the hospital to get a chair for me. Derryn
pushed me the whole way, about 10km. We did it in record
time; he was on a mission.
Their mission was to raise awareness and signatures to Mr
Hinchs petition for a public sex offenders register.
The mother of murder victim Sarah Cafferkey spoke to
the Moorabool News following the walk and said she was
completely exhausted. Its completely drained me, not just
the walk but the emotions attached with the walk.
It was great to see people out and walking with us. Some I
didnt even know. There were a few of Sarahs girlfriends and
we had Sarahs dog Sprocket. Shes spoilt rotten, we take her
everywhere with us.
Ms Dickson said while Derryn wanted a public sex offenders
register, she thought there should also be a register for
serious high risk offenders. They basically fall into the same
category. Theyre the dangerous ones, repeat offenders who
cant be rehabilitated.
The judges all stated that (Sarahs murderer, Steven James
Hunter) had no chance of rehabilitation. Yet he was placed
in units in Bacchus Marsh where there were single mothers
and vulnerable people and nobody knew. Local police werent
even told, she said.
If youre moving into a new area or someone is moving in
near where you live, with a register you can look them up on
the system if youre not sure about them.
I still cant get my head around the system failures, especially
by Corrections Victoria.
Ms Dickson said she intended to be there with Derryn Hinch
when he finished his walk at Parliament House on May 26.
The From Jail to Justice walk started at HM Prison Langi Kal
Kal at Trawalla, near Beaufort.
Mr Hinch has 117,431 signatures to his petition for a public
sex offenders register. To show your support visit gopetition.

Attack destroys business

NO SPICE jar was left unbroken

in a break-in and vandalism
attack at the Ballan Tandoori
eatery in Ballan last week.
The Indian restaurant and
adjacent garage were both broken
into sometime last week, with
vandals destroying everything
that could break.
Ballan police suspect trespassers
broke in through the back of the
Indian restaurant, which had
been closed for two weeks while
the chef was on vacation. They
then removed a ceiling panel
between the restaurant and a
garage next door, and destroyed
every vehicle housed within the
garage.
The son of the owner is devastated at the damage caused by vandals.
In the restaurant a till was broken
into and a float removed. The
commercial fridge was broken,
holes were in every wall while in
excess of 200 broken plates, plus
glasses, food and spices, were
strewn around the premises.
Graffiti tags and expletives
were painted on the walls of
both premises and the vehicles
in the garages. Front and rear
windshields and side windows of
the vehicles were smashed, and
bonnets covered in chemicals
and powder were dented with
obvious footprints left behind.
Three vehicles parked outside
the garage were stolen.
Ballan Police officers inspect the damage.

A little Bella miracle

MOORABOOL News reporter Kate Taylor had given up
all hope of ever celebrating
Mothers Day with a baby of
her own, but recently her
dream came true.
It took Kate and her husband, James, three years
of IVF treatment before
they finally welcomed their
daughter Bella into the
world in March this year.
We had unexplained infertility and were just very
lucky that we got our little
miracle after so much stress
and difficulty, Ms Taylor
said.
Going through IVF was
the toughest thing Ive ever
done, and Id completely
given up on it ever working
until that one final shot at it
worked and I ended up with
my baby girl.
The 32-year-old had already faced her fair share of
challenges before embarking on IVF.
Ive been blind for 12 years
now, so Im used to being
able to adapt to different
ways of doing things as
Charles Darwin pointed
out, its survival of the most
adaptable. Though it would
have been nice if evolution gave babies the gift of

speech so I wouldnt have

to play this guessing game
of why the baby is crying.
Epic fail, Darwin. Epic fail,
she said.
I do some things differently (to sighted mums),
I carry Bella around in a
Baby Bjorn a lot so I can
have both of my hands free
to use a cane.

Theres also benefits because I dont get any stimulus through sight, I tend
to use the other senses to
make up for it, so I sing to
Bella a lot and she responds
really strongly to voices
now. Im really good at telling the difference in her
cries, better than sighted
mothers.
Ms Taylor said the first

couple of weeks were a

steep learning curve but
she had her husband to
watch and help so she was
independent with Bella
right from the start. I wish
I was entitled to a full-time
nanny because Im blind,
that would be lovely, but I
have to tough it out like any
other mum.
I love everything about it.
The sleep deprivation not
so much, I didnt realise
it would be this hard. No
wonder sleep deprivation
is used as torture, it really
is difficult. But I love playing with Bella and singing
to her and seeing how she
already is developing such
a strong personality, she
said.
I didnt think that anything could ever make me
laugh at six in the morning but when Bella does a
mess in her nappy so loud
it wakes my husband up,
that makes me laugh and I
didnt expect that at all.
Moorabool News readers
can soon look forward to
a regular column by Kate
Taylor where shell write
about the lighter, fun sides
of motherhood.

Jobs teetering after

budget released
Grampians Medicare Local, which employs 65 staff
across Western Victoria,
including Moorabool, will
cease operations by June
2015.
The announcement followed the release of the federal budget, which outlined
the closure of all 61 Medicare Local organisations
across Australia.
Grampians Medicare Local CEO Andrew McPherson said Medicare Locals,
which commenced operations in 2012 as part of the
national health reform,
would soon be replaced by
a smaller number of pri-

mary health services.

It is an anxious time for
staff, however the organisation remains committed
to supporting GPs, primary
health care workers and
health services to ensure
the best healthcare is provided throughout the transition period and beyond,
Mr McPherson said.
We are extremely proud
of what we have already
achieved in our region. The
past year has seen the establishment of headspace
in Ballarat and the delivery
of clinical mental health
services throughout the
region, assisting Aboriginal

and Torres Strait islanders

living with chronic disease
and working in the areas
of telehealth and eHealth
to improve health needs in
our region.
The importance of targeted healthcare that considers the diverse needs
of local communities has
been an integral part of our
focus to date. Our Community Needs Analysis identified extremely concerning
health statistics for the
Grampians region, including the highest rate of respiratory disease in Australia and high avoidable death
rates from conditions such

as diabetes, cardiovascular
disease and cancer.
Mr McPherson said the
federal budget had outlined
that primary health networks would be established
in early 2015 following a
tender process at the end of
the year.
He said Grampians Medicare Local would now
explore other possible avenues including whether it
could continue as an independent organisation delivering services for the newly
formed primary health
network or tendering to
become a primary health
network.

And the winner is

It is one of those you had
to be there moments.
Literally!
The
Village
shopping
centre in Bacchus Marsh
along with Gold N Time
jewellers ran a $5000
diamond ring giveaway
competition,
with
the
winner drawn on Sunday.
To win, you had to be in
attendance with the ticket
validated correctly.
The barrel was difficult to
turn with the enormous
amount of entries, but guest
barrel girl Moorabool
mayor Paul Tatchell had a
winner with the first ticket
pulled out.
A large crowd held their
breath as the name exhaled
from the PA system, and
the winner is . Rosemary
van Alkemade, Mr Tatchell
said.
The
Bacchus
Marsh
woman was overcome with

glee and astonishment.

I cant believe it, she kept
saying whilst shaking.
Mrs van Alkemade put her
20 year old engagement ring
in for repair at Gold N Time
jewellers which enabled her
to submit her entry.
I had my ring rodium
plated and a diamond chip
repaired. This new ring is,
oh, beautiful. I cant believe
it.
Her mother, Doris Needs,
was so thrilled for her
daughter.
I couldnt think of a better
person to win. She does
everything for someone
else and never has a bad
word to say about anybody,
she said.
The
Village
General
Manager Rob Smith along
with Bree Mort then drew
15 $50 shopping vouchers
as consolation prizes.

Healthy
partnership
award
A partnership between
Djerriwarrh Health Services and La Trobe University
won a Victorian Government health award last
week.
Djerriwarrh Health Services won the partnerships
in health category at the
inaugural People in Health
Awards on Thursday. The
awards recognised outstanding educational and
training initiatives to grow
and develop Victorias
health workforce.
Djerriwarrh Health Services CEO Bruce Marshall said
the partnership between La
Trobe University and Djerriwarrh Health Services involved the practical and academic training of dentists.
The dentists being trained
at Djerriwarrh Health Services are fourth and fifth
year under graduates who
at the completion of their
fifth year will graduate as
qualified dentists ready
for either public or private
practice, Mr Marshall said.
The entire arrangement
has been successful because of the preparedness
by the Health Service and
La Trobe University to be

flexible with regards to

their working arrangement
and the students academic
experience.
He said under supervision
fourth and fifth year under
graduates would treat patients, which provided students with a practical work
environment and benefitted people requiring dental
care at the same time. This
benefits not only the local
community but in the longer term the state of Victoria
and/or Australia as there
is a shortage of trained
dentists.
The recognition of the cooperative working arrangement between La Trobe
University and Djerriwarrh
Health Services is acknowledgement of how well the
health service is regarded
in training new dentists,
he said.
The 12 People in Health
award categories acknowledged health services, primary and community care
organisations, education
providers and individuals for excellence in health
education, training and development across Victoria.

This will include re-shaping,
installation of sub surface drainage
and re-turfing with a sustainable turf
species, Mr Scoble said.
This will create a safer facility for
the Ballan Football Netball Club,
other reserve user groups and the
wider community.
Basically, the ground is too hard
in summer and chops up heavily in
winter causing risk management
issues whilst trying to sustain
participation. This project will
ensure the ground can sustain use
and is safe for the usage required 12
months of the year.
Mr Scoble said the upgrade was
scheduled to commence at the
conclusion of the current football
season and anticipated that the
project will be completed by March
2015.
A joint announcement was made
last Wednesday with the Victorian
Government, which also contributed
$55,000 to the $100,000 project.
Member for Western Victoria Simon
Ramsay said: This is a great example
of local and state government working
together to get the community more
active.

said.
I found out I got the scholarship late last year but I
couldnt officially use the

financially.
She was presented with the
scholarship in a ceremony
at her former school, Catholic Regional College Melton,
last Friday.
Ms Miesen said she was
encouraged to apply for
the scholarship in 2013 by a
fantastic careers counselor at the school. Last year
her results placed her in the
top three Year 12 students
at CRC.
She said she still lived at
home in Bacchus Marsh
and commuted to university four days a week. Despite
the scholarship she said she
would continue to teach
dance classes part-time.
MSRF
chairman
Rob
Knowles said Annika was
selected by the Foundation
for her outstanding leadership qualities, commitment
to her local community and
her inspirational road to
success.
Without the scholarships,
amazing young people
like Annika may not have
reached their full potential, Mr Knowles said.
She may have missed out
on a tertiary education,
or worse, not realised her
dreams of making a significant life-long difference to
her local community in rural and regional Victoria.

Rate reduction approved for

farmers and miners
He also proposed that
council adopt the amended
rating strategy for a period
of two years, rather than
four. Both motions were
successful by votes of five to
one, with Cr Dave Edwards
in the chair.
Cr Tatchell said the differential rates system came
with a lot of issues.
Once it was financially
viable to buy a farm at
Moorabool, but because
were within the peri-urban
area and in a growth cycle
its become prohibitive because of (land) value, Cr
Tatchell said.
Agriculture is the catalyst
for this motion. It gets hit
awfully hard, awfully often. That couple of per cent

in monetary terms wont

make a big difference. Its
goodwill in protecting this
industry, which is the driver of growth. If you take that
away then suddenly the
things about the area you
enjoy living in are taken
away.
He said adopting a rate
strategy for two years would
bring it into line with valuations and there wouldnt
be a massive spike in values. Its an opportunity
to be proactive rather than
reactive.
Speaking against both
motions, councillor Tonia
Dudzik said council had
already made a decision
two weeks ago to endorse
the current rating system

and we didnt consider it

lightly.
It was recommended by
council officers as the best
option. It was in line with
community consultation.
We asked people what is
your opinion and it came
back
overwhelmingly:
leave the system as is, Cr
Dudzik said.
I understand farmers are
struggling, but so is the rest
of the community. If this
motion is rescinded the effect is farming rates and
mining rates will go down
but everyone elses rates
will increase.
Maddingley woman Marg
Scarff said she was disappointed the rating strategy
was being voted on again at

ACTION
Want to make a difference in your community?
Moorabool Shire Council are looking for
a group of young people aged 12 to 25
years, to be part of the decision making
process of Council and have a say on
issues affecting local young people.
These issues could include: events and
entertainment, health and well-being,
education and employment or how the
community perceives young people.
This is your chance to have a voice and
tell us what young people want, to be
a leader, to learn a range skills and to
meet new friends.
We will provide a fun and FREE 2 day
leadership camp, ongoing training
and development, a flexible meeting
schedule and we will celebrate the
achievements of youth in the Shire.

a special meeting.
Im really disappointed
there was not adequate notice of this meeting. I dont
think thats appropriate. I
dont know what the rush
is. It reflects on what I think
has been a poor consultation process throughout
this topic, Ms Scarff said.
Im all for fairness and equity, but Im not convinced
that council has presented
a convincing argument for
any change to the current
rating system. Will this result in increases in general
residential rates?
Moorabool Shire CEO Rob
Croxford said it was true
that any shortfall of rate
income by the shire resulting from reduced rates for

farming and extractive

industries would need to
be redistributed over other
categories, including general residential.
Cr Tom Sullivan said that
the argument one group
was going to pay more was
merely speculation. We
dont know how its going
to play out. This is a show
of good faith that council
values the farmers.
He said the differential
rates for farmers in the
Hepburn Shire were 60 per
cent.
I see this two per cent as a
show of good faith if council is serious about protecting agriculture. I support
the recommendation.

IN AN extraordinary move,
two weeks after adopting
the current rating strategy,
Moorabool Shire councillors have voted to amend
the strategy to reduce differential rates for farming
and mining activities.
At a special meeting of
council last Wednesday,
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell put forward a
motion that council rescind
their decision to adopt the
current rating strategy.
He proposed a new rating strategy that would see
farm differential rates drop
by two per cent from 80 to
78 per cent and extractive
industry differential rates
be reduced from 320 to 312
per cent.

Letters to the Editor

TOM

Dear Editor,
This is an open letter to
Gail Fiander in response to
her ridiculous and absurd
allegations made on ABCs
107.9 radio show and which
was further reported on in
The Moorabool News published on May 13, 2014.
Let me start off with the
big elephant in the room.
You should be ashamed of
yourself Ms Fiander. How
do you not hang your head
in disgrace over the things
youve said on the radio?
How dare you trivialise the
suicide deaths of two local
Ballan teens. How dare you
attempt to use the misfortune that has befallen these
two victims families, all in
a vain, pathetic attempt to
suit your own, left of field
agenda? That is unforgivable. Nothing less than
a formal, written, public
apology from Ms Fiander to
both families would suffice
under the circumstances,
and even then Id say that
her apology would not be
enough.
When trying to get the
public on board with your
ideas for a better future
for our town, I suggest you
do not alienate the very

townsfolk you are attempting to represent with your

demented claims. Words
hurt. They can cause stress,
grief and leave people wading in a plethora of mixed
emotions.
Maybe
you
should have thought about
the repercussions of your
claims before you opened
your mouth.
Now, for the real issue. We
dont need a high school in
Ballan. Never have and still
dont. With a plethora of
high schools available for
us to choose from, offering
a huge range of educational
opportunities for students
to study in the surrounding
Ballarat, Daylesford and
Bacchus Marsh areas. How
could a small high school in
Ballan possibly compete? It
couldnt. End of story.

Dear Editor
As an occasional reader of
your paper, I am writing to
express my appreciation
of your inclusion of Tom
Kingstons articles on the

environment and on climate change. At the same

time, it is disquieting to see
contrary articles on these
topics by interstate climate
change deniers not that
they do not have the right
to express their opinions,
but that they often receive
undue prominence, since
they represent few, if any,
scientists actually working
in the field.
The views of the latter are
published in the reports
of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change,
and the seriousness of their
findings is such that it is not
being alarmist to believe
that drastic measures will
be needed for human civilisation to survive more or
less intact on this planet,
which is warming at a rate
never experienced before.
Unfortunately, our leaders
have adopted a head in the
sand attitude, and choose
to ignore these findings, insisting that we need change
nothing of our selfish and
wasteful lifestyles and that
economic growth alone
will be the means of achieving prosperity for all. Even
worse, upon taking office

Do we really love a sunburnt country

of droughts and flooding rains?
Jenny and I took a visitor to
Cradle Mountain a couple
of days ago and it was freezing; no snow but cold. We
visited the house of Gustav Weindorfer who lived
at Cradle Mountain in the
early part of the twentieth
century. On the day he died,
in early May 1932, snow was
everywhere no longer.
And as Victoria breaks records for a warm May and
late at that, Brazil suffers
its worst drought on record
and Bosnia is under water,
some research I had read of
late came to mind.
You might remember the
floods that occurred in England earlier this year. Well
there was some research on
the impact of the floods on
peoples thinking. The research was on the percentage of people in Britain who

selected environment as
the most important issues
facing England leading up
to the recent flooding and
immediately after it. The
results were; before (Jan
13 14: 6%, Jan 21 -22, 8%,),
during (Jan 27 28 9 %, Feb
10 -11 23%,) and after (Feb
25 26 13%, March 10 11
11% and April 10 11 10%).
It seems that once the crisis
was over the environment
is no longer as important an
issue. This might explain
why the present Australian
government can get away
with demolishing so many
environmental programs
we are not in a flood or a
drought or are we?
Another interesting study
I have recently read was
of the various countries
and how they view climate
change. Again the research

was the percentage of residents from each country

who say climate change
is a major threat to their
country. The results are as
follows: USA 40%, Britain
48%, Mexico 52%, Australia
52%, Spain 64%, Japan
72%, Brazil 76% and South
Korea 85%.
However the saddest bit of
research I have come across
in recent times, from Oxford University, was a world
map of a countries activity
and commitment to action
on climate change. The
colours on the world map
were a couple of shades of
green and yellow and orange. Quite a lot of the map
was green in colour. Rich
green was listed as a good
result and these countries
were listed as having a good
activity and commitment

to action. These countries

included India, China, and
Europe. Mild green was
listed as a very good result
and these countries were
listed as having a very good
activity and commitment
to action. These countries
included Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Indonesia and Japan.
Orange was listed as very
poor result and these countries were listed as having a
very poor activity and commitment to action. These
countries included the
USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia, and not
many more.
And in one final research
findings the Greendex survey (coming from National
Geographic) of most of
the significant countries
around the world ranked
average consumers in those

countries according to the

environmental sustainability of their behaviour. The
higher score the more the
environmental sustainability of the consumers.
The top-scoring consumers in recent times are in
the developing economies
of India, China and Brazil,
in descending order. Consumers in countries such
as Mexico, Brazil, China
and India tend to be most
concerned about issues
like climate change, air and
water pollution, species
loss, and shortages of fresh
waterall factors affecting
the planets ability to support life.
Of the nations surveyed,
the people of Germany,
the US, Australia and Britain feel the least consumer
guilt; the people of India,

China, Mexico and Brazil

the most.
These results led the columnist George Monbiot,
(published on the Guardians website, 9th May 2014)
to say: The richer we are
and the more we consume,
the more self-centred and
careless of the lives of others we appear to become.
The more harm we do, the
less concerned about it we
become. And the more hyperconsumerism destroys
relationships, communities
and the physical fabric of
the Earth, the more we try
to fill the void in our lives by
buying more stuff.
What is your opinion?

Most people who are planning to buy or sell their

home use a licensed real
estate agent with the aim
of getting the best advice
possible and, at sale time,
the best price.
Theres another very good
reason to use a licensed
agent: they are trained
professionals working in a
profession highly regulated
for your protection.
The Victorian Government
has a licensing system with
numerous requirements for
licensed real estate agents.
To become a licensed real
estate agent in Victoria
and buy or sell property
you must have a sound
understanding of the legislative and regulatory
requirements involved in
real estate transactions.
In regional Victoria many
agents are multi-skilled
they not only understand
the requirements of selling
property in major towns,
they are also versed in selling rural properties.
Extensive training is undertaken to become either
a licensed estate agent or
an agents representative.
A licensed estate agent can
own or manage an estate
agency and conduct auctions, while an agents rep-

resentative is a employed
by a licensed estate agent
and may work in sales or
property management.
The REIV is registered to
provide both qualifications.
In addition, REIV members
must abide by our code of
ethics and undertake continuing education to maintain their membership.
Agents operate across a
range of specialist areas. It
includes agents, who operate in residential or commercial real estate, property managers and buyers
agents.
Many sellers who are planning to list their own property will visit their nearest agent. However, when
choosing an agent, its important to check their local
reputation.
Speaking
with
family, friends and neighbours
provides you with information on the experience they
have had with local agents.
Seeking advice from people
you trust is an important
source of information and
can be just as valuable as
an agencys advertising or
their website.
So if you are selling your
home and buying a new
one, or even venturing into
the housing market for the
first time this year, make
sure the estate agents you
are dealing with are properly licensed, belong to the
REIV and have a strong local reputation.
You can search for your
local REIV agents, all of
whom will be fully qualified, at www.reiv.com.au/
Advice/Agency-Search.

State of the
art venue

Despite dozens of venues

within regional Victoria,
Bungaree was the chosen
site in Moorabool for last
Saturdays WorkSafe Country Championships.
The Central Highlands
football and netball sides
played
an
interleague
match against the Loddon
Vally FNL at the Bungaree
Recreation Reserve, chosen with support from the
AFL Vic Country Football
development
manager
Tim Shearer. The selection
spoke volumes about the
transformation of the facilities at the reserve in recent
years.
The state-of-the-art Bungaree community facility

has set new standards for

recreation and functions
since it opened last year.
The facilities include a
function room, community
meeting space, commercial
kitchen and a sports pavilion with changerooms,
a community health club
space and a first aid training/medical room.
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell said that hosting the WorkSafe Country
Championships was a testament to what could be
achieved when there was a
true partnership between
the community and state
and local governments.
None of this would have
been possible individually.

Every stakeholder played

their part and worked tirelessly to achieve this result.
I feel like pulling on the
boots again myself, Cr
Tatchell said.
Saturdays game will not
only show off the best of
country footy, it will remind people of the commitment of our communities to making Moorabool
Shire the best place to live.
As impressive as the facilities are, Im even more
impressed with the way
the Bungaree community
raised more than $100,000
to make it a reality.
Central Highlands 19.16
(130) defeated Loddon
Valley FL 11.12 (78).

The winning Central Highlands senior team.

The Central Highlands players (white shorts) outplayed their Loddon Valley opponents last Saturday, with quick running
and determined play.

The Ballan football club

is hoping to get the hop on
Buninyong this Saturday
with the return of ex Hawthorn premiership player,
Campbell Brown.
The Blues had Brown lined
up at half forward in his last
game on April 12 against
Waubra, which saw a narrow five point loss to the
Blues.
The home game for Ballan
is expected to draw another
large crowd and provide an
entertaining match.
It will be a big task for the
Blues as Buninyong sit
third on the ladder with five
wins, and Ballan ninth with
only three wins.
It will be a big job for the

boys but could be the closest we get to a win over the

Bunnies with the way the
team is playing this season, President Bill Smith
said.
Our losses have been
fairly close so we hope we
can have the advantage
of the home ground to get
the four points. The crowd
support will also make a
difference.
Campbell Brown indicated
he would, where possible,
play again throughout the
season for Ballan.
Coach Mark Williams
came to us and said an opportunity has arisen for
Campbell to play this weekend, so we took that with
open arms, Mr Smith said.
The day starts with junior netball and football
from 9am with the ball to
bounce on the senior match
at 2.15pm at Ballan Recreation Reserve.

Now a star club!

Pentland Calisthenics
College
The local sporting club
recently received a Star 2
Club accreditation, as part
of Calisthenics Victorias
(CVI) Star Club Program.
CVI Executive Officer Matthew Brown, Erica OBrien
Club and Community Development Manager along
with mascot Cali Bear, recently paid Pentland CC a
visit to present them with

their certificate.
Pentland CC President
Gayle Stewart said the Star
Club Program is a CVI endorsed quality assurance
program designed to assist
Clubs to identify, prioritise
and implement effective
management
strategies
to meet the changing demands on sporting groups.
The Star 2 focuses on
development and demonstrate an awareness and
commitment to develop-

ment in the five key areas

within the club, producing
or providing evidence of
basic quality management
systems, she said.
Matthew Brown congratulated everyone at Pentland
on the achievement.
Its wonderful to see
Clubs like Pentland getting
behind the program and I
congratulate the committee on the hard work they
have done to gain the Star 2
accreditation.

Under 7 & 8 athletes off to a flying start in the 1000m event at the Bostock Reservoir.

Bacchus Marsh
Little Athletics
A glorious day greeted
athletes
at
Bostock
Reservoir,
Ballan
last
Saturday for the Bacchus
Marsh
cross
country
meet. A fantastic turn out,
with well over 70 runners
competing in distances
from 500m to 3000m. The
athletes ran through the
pine plantation, with the
older athletes then heading
across the spillway and out

in the bushlands where

they battled up a steep hill
before turning and heading
back towards the car park
area for a tough finishing
uphill home run.
Next weeks Cross Country
meet will be held at Myrniong Recreation Reserve at
10.30am. Athletes should
arrive well before 10.15am
to allow time to adequately
prepare for your race.

Gumdrops the Queen of
the Pacific
Ultra consistent pint sized
six year old Western Terror/Awesome Flowers mare
Gumdrops was rewarded
for her consistency by brilliantly taking the $100,000
(Group 1) Pegasus Club
Queen Of The Pacific, a
designated race for Mares
M0 or better class (Discretionary Handicapped) over
2760 metres at Tabcorp
Park Melton on Friday.
Having her first standing
start attempt, Gumdrops
stepped safely from barrier
four as starter Todd Matthews released the field.
Queenslander
Forever
Gold also making her
standing start debut began
swiftly from 10 metres, with
Kylie Rasmussen immediately sending her forward
to race in the open giving
Gumdrop the sit she was
looking for.
Extricated into the clear
on the home turn, Gumdrops sprinted sharply to
challenge Steam Washed
halfway up the running
and following a deafening
roar from all of her supporters which would have done
credit to a Melbourne Cup
crowd, drew clear to record
a 5.1 metre victory over a
game Steam Washed, with
The Good Times using the
sprint lane from three back
the markers to finish third
12.5 metres away ahead of
Carpenters Daughter and
Baby Bling.
Raced by Coimadai (Melton District) residents Ron
and Connie Mallia along
with trainer Steve Zammit,
Gumdrops recorded a mile
rate of 1-59.4 (last half mile
57.6 quarter 28.9) which is
only .3 seconds outside Our
Sixpences race record set
last year.
Steve Zammit was lost for
words immediately following the event saying he
could not believe what had
happened in giving him
his biggest win in the sport.

Parwan trainer/driver Jodi

Quinlan was successful
with Yankee Spider/Lunar Landing filly Illawong
Moonshine in the Bendigo
@ Tabcorp Park Melton 3-Y0 Trotters Handicap over
2240 metres on Tuesday
May 20.

BALLAN PLUMBING

Bred by Dr Martin Hartnett and raced by him in

partnership with wife Kaye,
Illawong Moonshine began
brilliantly to settle one/one
from outside the 10 metre
mark, before going forward
with a rush to assume control from Startedwithakiss.
Always travelling sweetly,
Illawong Moonshine defies
all challengers on straightening to score by 1.6 metres in advance of Sammy
Charles (one/one at bell)
and Illawong Helios also
bred and raced by the good
doctor which flashed home
late from last after a slow
beginning. The mile rate
2-06.2.

Steve Zammit has his

small but select team going
great guns at present and
much improved 4-Y-0 Royal
Mattjesty/Awesome Asset
mare was a big winner of
the CV Batteries Strath Village Pace Final for C0 class
over 1720 metres at Melton
and in doing so, brought
up two wins in succession
after winning her heat at
Kilmore a week earlier.
Driven by stable reinsman
Rod Petroff, Awesome Mattjesty from gate six settled
mid-field in the running
line, before easing three
wide to follow Heavenly
Rapture and Koton Blossom
Lombo home three wide in
the final circuit.
Despite being right off the
track on the home turn,
Awesome Mattjesty produced a brilliant burst of
speed on straightening to
register a 12.4 metre victory
over Koton Blossom Lombo
and Hens Party from last in
a slick mile rate of 1-57.3.

Meltons
Sue
Hunter
snared the City Of Greater
Bendigo 3-Y-0 Pace over
2240 metres with Art Major/Winmara Lass gelding
Dentona in a rate of 1-59.9.
Coming off an eye catching third at Kilmore, Dentona with Greg Sugars in the
sulky was restrained from
gate six at the start to settle
at the tail of the field, with
the hot favourite Macterra
Lad leading effortlessly
from the pole.
Held up for a late finish,
Dentona was too strong
at the finish for Macterra
Lad and an unlucky Melita
Bromac which raced in the
open before being severely
checked when Macterra
Lad ran wide approaching
the final bend.
Switching down to the
sprint lane on turning, Melita Bromac was close up in
third place before lodging a
protest against the runner
up which was subsequently
upheld.

Under 11s
The
smallest
Bacchus
Marsh
Scorpions played their match against
Creswick.
Both teams played a brilliant game
with the local Scorpions defence
and wings stunning, stopping the
opposition from getting the advantage
time after time. The strikers and
attackers were on the ball, keeping
the game at the Scorpions end
consistently.

Under 18s
After a hectic week with the re-grading
of the U18s, resulting in the merging of
the As and Bs, Bacchus Marsh found
themselves up against the top of the

table Brimbank Stallions at Club Italia

Sporting Club. It was a very physical
game from the start, but that is what
the Scorpions thrive off.
The Bacchus Marsh game plan was to
get on the score sheet early and thats
what they did. Within the first 20
seconds, Chris Machado was brought
down and Jalen Shugg stepped up
and scored a stunning free kick from
35 yards out. This had the Scorpions
up and about and before you knew it,
Kemal Durmush slipped through the
defense and coolly slotted past the
helpless keeper.
A little lapse in concentration saw
the hosts score two goals in quick
succession however the Bacchus
Marsh defenders kept their heads
up high and Jiah German deserves
recognition for a very solid outing.
Coming into the dying minutes of the
first half, Jalen Shugg held composure
and put in an inviting cross and in
came Leroy Almenara to smash it
home, scoring his first goal in his first
start for the season.
At half time, the Scorpions were up 3-2
and knew it would take another huge
45 minutes.
Although Brimbank equalised to
make it 3-3, the Scorpions were doing
exceptionally well holding their
positions and a huge shout out to the
man of the match Josh Kalemusic
playing at left-back for the first time.
The Scorpions won a free kick and
after it being whipped in, Chris
Machado taken the opportunity and
scored a first touch curler from outside
the box to put Bacchus Marsh up.
The boys were doing so well but
unfortunately conceded a late goal for
Under 15s.
the game to finish in a draw, 4-4.
