DRINKNDRIVE
INTRODUCTION
Drink driving is a huge problem. It not only affects society in New Zealand but all over the
world too. It results in accidents, fatalities, injuries, emotional scaring and it uses societys
limited resourecs. It is caused from excessive drinking, peer pressure to drive or lack of
alternatives. However this needs to stop. The invention of DRINKNDRIVE devices that will
get installed in cars so the cars wont start if a person is intoxicated will benefit society as
there will be no risk of any lives being endangered from someone else making a stupid
decision and driving while intoxicated.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To stop drink driving altogether so no deaths or injuries will be caused from drinking and
driving. This will evidently help save the worlds limited resources that would have been
used to treat the patients.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Alcohol Testing
Industry:
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low The buyer power is low at this moment in time
because there is no other options available on the
market. The device will be made compulsary for
all vehicles making it a neccessity. From a buyers
point of view they would want the buyer power
to be high as that gives the buyer more options
and choices. (Course book)

3

3
Supplier power: Low The supplier power is low in this scenario as there
are a lot of suppliers to choose from to purchase
our raw materials from. This is a good thing as
you do not want your suppliers to be powerful as
they can dictate you and have more control over
the business to benefit themselves if they are the
only suppliers or there are limited choices.
(Course Book,2014) There are even smiliar
devices on the market today that allow you to be
able to test your own breath before you drive.
However we are creating the device to be able to
sync up with the car giving DRINKNDRIVE a
competetive advantage over companies like
Shenzhen Oway Technology Co LTD and Haida
Equipment Co are just a few examples. (alibaba
,2014)
Threat of new entrants: High As there are already simiar devices on the market
today with the same function, they shoud be able
to adapt to meet the changes in the market by
incorporating that their device can be installed in
cars too. If this was to occur it would make our
companies market share smaller. Therefore
threat of entrance is high as it is easy for
competitors to enter the market. We can try to
reduce this by increasing entry barriers so it
makes it harder for competitives to enter the
market.
(Coursebook,2014

4
Threat of substitutes: Low Threat of substitute of low because there are no
alternatives to this problem. This device being
installed in cars is going to become compulsary.
(Coursebook,2014)
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High There is four ways to measure the amount of
alcohol in someones system. They are a urine
test, a blood test, a breathalyzer and by
measuring the percentage of body mass against
them. However rivalry would be high for the
different companies producing the same product.
For example 3 companies could be producing
different models of breathalzers. Therefore
rivalry is high amoung competitors making it
fierce in the market and have the companies fight
to get the biggest market share. (sharecare,
2012)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Depending on how you look at this industry. We
could argue that we are the only ones in the industry making the industry very attractive as
buyer power, supplier power, threat of new entrant, threat of substitute and rivalry amoung
competitors would all be low. However there are similar devices that are available in the
market today but do not have the function of being installed the car. However the market
needs to be adaptable to change for consumer demands making the industry less attractive.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
DRINKNDRIVEs customers will be mainly to manufacturers of cars. However NewZealand
does not make their own cars as it cost cheaper to import the cars from overseas from car
manufactures from Germany, Australia, Japan and all over the world. For example
companies like Holden, Audi and BMW. However the goal is to implement this device in all

5

5
cars around the world, so it has a huge impact on the world. This will reduce the amount of
road deaths and fatalities per year making the roads a safer place for people to drive. A
legislation that a car cannot pass their warrant of fitness (WOF) without the device will help
ensure everyone has this device installed. The device will also be available on the market for
customers with older versions of the cars so they are able to get the device installed. The
target market will be consumers who drive and use cars.
3.4 The Product and Service
Introducing the compulsary device into the market will help ensure that no person will be
able to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol again. Everyone will be satisfied as
there will be no DUIs, accidents, fatalities, emotional scaring from the fatalities family or
from people involved and the resources used to treat the patients are able to get used for
other emergencies. It will make consumers think ahead to make alternative options. It will
not just decrease it, it will stop it.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
One supplier is the company lion laboratories limited,uk. This company would be ideal to be
supplied from because they are so passionate about eliminating the problem and drink
driving as well. We are one of the worlds leading manufacturers of breath alcohol testing
equipment. We make and supply mobile (in-car), static and handheld instruments and
associated accessories for use by the police. Expert advice on alcohol related issues,
training and approved service facilities will ensure your alcohol policy works effectively for
you. (lionlaboratories, 2014) This supplier cares about quality and the wellbeing of the
consumers. The most common cars used by New Zealanders are Toyotas, Subaru, Ford,
Holden, Mitsubishi and Nissan. DRINKNDRIVE would approach these suppliers and make
sure they have prioritized if I was considering the New Zealand market however I would also
partner up with other car manufactures like Suzuki and Honda because DRINKNDRIVE will
want to outsource the device so it is available all around the world.
3.6 Strategy:

6

6
The market is very broad as it will reach out worldwide. It will come into the market with a
cost strategy of differentiation which is a high cost but aiming towards a broad market.
However it could even enter with cost leadership aimed towards a broad market but at a
low cost to make it affordable for everyone if the governments are going to help fund or
subsidy this movement. (Course Book)
Therefore the overall strategy DRINKNDRIVE would enter the market would be cost
leadership because then it will make it less likely to go onto the black market if the
differention strategy was used instead.
3.7 Value Chain Activity:
The primary value activities that would be most important for the device to add value to it
would be the manufacturing or making of the product. (Course Book) This is where the
assembling of the whole device takes place and is very important because this stage needs
to be perfect in order to be able to deliver and satisfy the customers or the next secondary
sector of the process. However the support value activity Procurement is also a crucial part
of the process as quality needs to ammaculate in order for the operation to be a success.

CONCLUSION
Over all producing the device will entail the many systems in order to go from raw materials
to the finished product that customers or manufactures are satisfied with as well as using IT
to communicate with customers and manufacturers about orders, deliveries and timing. The
value added and now created to make the device will stop this drink driving problem
forever.
