Honoring The Legacy: Reaching For The Stars ...
The Jacksonville Section of the National Council of Negro Women is continuing the work began in 1935 when
Mary McLeod Bethune founded the National Council of Negro Women. Since our founding in 1938, the
Jacksonville Section remains focused on improving the quality of life for women, their families and communities,
especially those of African American heritage.

The Jacksonville Section of the National Council of Negro Women embraces the leadership of women and men of
all backgrounds who desire to lend themselves to programs of action, advocacy, equality and justice on the
national and international stage.

Our members come from every walk of life and range in age from students to retirees. Whatever the stage of life
or age, our members have one primary thing in common they are united in common task for the welfare of
others.

The Jacksonville Sections Board of Directors, in conjunction with the Bethune Legacy Event Committee, is
pleased to present the 2013 Bethune Legacy Celebration Reception and Silent Auction. The goal of this
fundraising event is to reengage members while recognizing Life members and community partners whose
tireless and selfless sacrifices advance the mission of our organization and strengthen and empower our
community. It also serves to assist us in raising the vital funds necessary to continue the important programs and
activities of the National Council of Negro Women.

Special Thanks
We send heartfelt thanks to all those that have assisted us in hosting this event. We have pressed our way
through a host of challenges and obstacles knowing that God will honor all that we do in His name, by His power
and according to His Word. We thank God for the example of the remarkable women we honor tonight, those who
came before us and those who will follow, women committed to service and advocacy.
We offer special thanks to Dr. Theresa Hodge, Reed Educational Center Executive Director, the Centers Tween
Girls and their parents, Gayle Pitts Peele and entire the family of the late Gertrude H. Peele, Marquita Wilson

effort in the spirit of advocacy and charity.

Mistress of Ceremonies

Angela Spears is a former veteran television broadcaster and local Jacksonville news
anchor and morning reporter. She currently serves as the Community Engagement
Officer and Special Assistant in the Office of the Mayor for Mayor Alvin Brown and the
City of Jacksonville.
Angela is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and is a staunch community
advocate sitting on the Board of Directors for several organizations; including the
Sigma Public Education and Research (SPEAR) Foundation, an organization that
helps non-profit and community-based groups attain funding sources for programs to
improve the lives of women and minorities, and the H.I.L.L. of Northeast FL, an
organization that provides mentoring, training and career development of Hispanic
labor.
Angela is a sought after guest speaker for non-profit and community based organizations throughout
Jacksonville and is a dedicated volunteer, working with youth and in support of organ donation awareness,
parlaying her extensive experience in the field of broadcast journalism and communications to support her
personal commitment to advocacy of women and minorities.
Angela is a native Texan and grew up in Corpus Christi. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism Broadcast News
Degree from The University of Texas at Austin.
Keynote Speaker

Dr. Evelyn Bethune is the granddaughter of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. She is the
CEO of the Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Preservation Institute, Inc., which was
founded in 2002 by the grandchildren of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune to ensure the
continuation, growth and development of her legacy by promoting education and
community service on a variety of platforms.
Dr. Evelyn Bethune is an accomplished lecturer and motivational speaker who works
tirelessly to hel p and inspi re others and share the message of perseverance
and purpose she l earned from her grandmother.
Dr. Bethune's message is one of personal development and building self-esteem.
Her workshops focus on the power of networking, public speaking, finding purpose and activating it. She
speaks on education, politics, grassroots community activism and the importance of exposing our urban
youth to community service, professional and small business development, womens advocacy and economic
development. Whatever the topic, her themes involves our God-given ability to triumph over adversity with
integrity and purpose always shared through personal i nsights and l ife lessons inspired by faith and
learned through the example of others.
Dr. Bethune is a LIFE Member of NCNW and is active in her l ocal Volusi a County Section. She
holds numerous other offices i n her local community including serving as Vice-President of Bethune-
Cookman University Volusia County Alumni Chapter. She is a member of the Board of Directors for PACE
Center for Girls, Inc., the Mental Health Association of Volusia and Flagler Counties and also serves as Chair
of the Alumni and Citizens Advisory Board of Bethune-Cookman University. She is a member of the NAACP
and the Florida Black Chamber of Commerce and is also actively involved in her church, New Mt. Zion
Missionary Baptist Church, where she organized the Cubs of Zion, Cub Scout Troop #171, teaches Sunday
School, and serves on several committees and ministries.
Dr. Bethune is a respected author, teacher, missionary, political scientist and community activist. She holds a
Bachelors in Accounting and Finance, a Masters in Finance, a Masters in Political Science and American
Government and a Ph.D. in Political Science and American Government. She resides in Daytona Beach,
Florida.

An organization of organizations since its very inception, the birth of the National Council of Negro
Women has long embodied and symbolized faith, commitment, unity and advocacy while serving as a
conduit and clearinghouse where women of all racial and cultural backgrounds work in unity to identify
and address disparity in our communities, particularly those facing minority women.
Born the child of slave parents, distinguished educator and presidential advisor, Mary McLeod Bethune
founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935. Despite the most fundamental and oppressive
beginnings, Dr. Bethune overcame the great inequity and injustice of her youth and not only envisioned,
but inspired an organization that would harness the power and develop the leadership of Black women
through a national forum that would promote black unity through its work to enhance opportunity and
quality of life for minority women and their families. She recognized the need for a unified organization of
women that would open doors for young womenso that when it speaks, its power will be felt.
The NCNW was designed as a place where women of all racial and cultural backgrounds found inclusion
and opportunity to work unified in the common goal of service and advocacy.
As a voluntary nonprofit membership organization, NCNW helps women to improve the quality of life for
themselves, their families, and their community.
Through its national affiliate organizations and over 240 community-based, collegiate and youth Sections,
NCNW has outreach to four million women, all contributing to the peaceful solutions of problems of
human welfare and rights.
Despite the loss of several influential leaders on the national and local levels, this powerful and diverse
coalition continues its efforts to address the community concerns of women of African descent and their
families with a united voice through economic, educational, social, cultural and scientific self-help
projects and programs nationally, and in communities across the nation.
The NCNW strives to achieve equality of opportunity and eliminate prejudice and discrimination based
upon race, creed, color, sex or national origin and seeks to fill the gaps that exist in our communities,
particularly in meeting the concerns of minority women. Through its core of volunteers in 31 states, the
NCNW brings the added support of a network of thousands of volunteers, whose collective efforts bolster
community service and actions.
This remains the goal, mission and objective of our organization today and is, in large part, the reason we
are here tonight. The 2013 Bethune Legacy Celebration commemorates the history and legacy of our
organization and the remarkable and inspiring women that work to continue its mission.
Legacy is defined as a gift or bequest, something received from an ancestor or predecessor. Something
of value as in material wealth, but this is only a fraction of what legacy truly is. Legacy is the tangible
impact of an individuals life or an organizations work. Legacy is fundamentally altruistic. It is not simply
sharing what youve earned, but sharing what youve learned! Holistically, it evolves from the inherent
desire to offer and commit the intangible characteristics of ones self to make a meaningful, lasting,
inspiring contribution to humanity by serving a cause greater than your own.
This is the true history and legacy of the NCNW.

The premise and focus of the programs and activities of the Jacksonville Section has always been and will
continue to be to improve the quality of life for all women, their families and communities through unity,
strength and advocacy.
Though our mission and mandate remains as envisioned by our founder and the many inspirational women
that have and continue to lead this organization; many other elements and aspects have and will change.
As with any organization, change is inevitable but growth is optional! The NCNW has indeed experienced
its share of dramatic change in the unexpected and difficult passing of beloved and long-time leaders in our
National office and the Jacksonville Section.
Despite the momentous loss of these respected and beloved leaders and the challenges accompanying such
substantial change, the National Council of Negro Women and the leaders and members of the Jacksonville
Section continue to work diligently to evolve existing programs and develop new programs and activities that
supports NCNWs long-standing emphasis on identifying and addressing disparity in our communities.
The goal of tonights event is to reenergize, reinvigorate, encourage and inspire our membership, leadership
and others in attendance by spotlighting the true mission, focus and objective of this historic organization, its
programs and the incredible leaders who inspire and compel us to action, unity and advocacy through their
own example women such as the late Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Dorothy I. Height and certainly our very
own Gertrude H. Peele. Ordinary women who overcame tremendous obstacles, injustice and inequality, yet
persevered through faith and confidence in God, realizing their task was not momentary.
Tonights program serves to celebrate our history of perseverance and the legacy of faith and commitment of
our members and leaders as we press forward unified in the common task of advocacy, service and support
of women those less fortunate than us, as well as we ourselves, with programs of education, science,
economic empowerment, social change, cultural awareness and more, some of which are noted below.

The 2013 Bethune Legacy Celebration showcases and honors the efforts of Life members, community
partners, and others that exemplify the best among us.
This tradition emanates from the wealth of women that have gone before us and from which we continue to
draw. Women that represent ability, intelligence, commitment, integrity and purpose; ordinary women of
faith who believed past their ability and found purpose, changing and impacting most, if not, everyone here
today! This is the wonderful and powerful legacy that both humbles and inspires us today!
