Objective:
Student will know the history and skills used to play basketball.
Essential Questions: Where was basketball invented? Who invented the game? How was the game of basketball invented?
Cross Curricular
Connections:
Students will learn the how, why, when, and where as it applies to the background information and
history of the game of basketball. Students shall investigate the linkage of African Americans
involvement in the game.
Preparation: Teacher will select a student to read a brief history of basketball. Teacher will explain basic changes
that has taken place since basketball was invented. Student will know the skills and techniques that
are used in playing the game.
Materials/Equipment: Writing materials, pre-written history for teacher or student to read.
Motivation/Lesson
Introduction:
In 1891, at Springfield College in Massachusetts, James A. Naismith developed the only game that is
truly American. There was a need to have a team sport that could be played indoors during the long
winter of New England. He placed peach baskets on the balcony railing at opposite ends of the
gymnasium then used a soccer ball. The basic concept is still the same. To score, the ball had to go
into the basket. The rules have developed over the years to what they are today. Todays game is
played on all levels: elementary school, high school, recreation, college, and professional levels. The
game draws the interest of all ages on the court and as fans.
Procedures: Teacher will provide pre-written materials for the students to use as a real aloud. Student will keep
pre-written materials as a study guide. Student will explain the linkage of African Americans
involvement in the game. Teacher will demonstrate skills used to play basketball and place students
into cooperative learning groups. Students will be regrouped to address individual needs.
Differentiation: Students with difficulties writing can have more time or have another student write down their ideas.
Any additional accommodations will be made based on students individual needs and IEP
recommendations.
Accommodations/Modifications : Accommodation - Summarizing Concepts,Modification - Leveled Reading Materials,Modification -
Reading Buddies
Closure: Student will share and compare notes. Each student will explain one thing they learned from the
lesson.
