DRUNK DRIVING PREVENTION
INTRODUCTION
Nowdays, we are getting so much conveniency from vehicles, but also we are suffering from
the problems that associated with them, one of the most effective problem addressed to it-
drunk driving has really become a serious issue in sociaty , therefore we are responsible to
solve it. The solution that take place in this situation is called driving controller, it consist
two main parts: one can detect alcohol level and thus the other one will prevent the vehicle
from ignition. This solution is effective in the way which can assure drivers safety.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
By providing effective and high quality product to the world to avoid the risk of drunk
driving.
3.2 Industry Analysis: automotive safety systems industry
Industry: Automotive safety systems industry. This is the industry that focuses on
automotive safety. It has become more and more important due to the increasing
occurrence of road accidents.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High Buyer power is quite high in this industry, this is
because customers have lots of choices, there are
various products that they can choose
from(Automotive safety product suppliers, 2014).
Supplier power: High Supplier power is relatively high because the
system contains three parts, and some of them
may require advanced technology in order to

3

3
guarantee the quality.
Threat of new entrants: low The threat of new entrants will be quite low as
the barrier of entry is high. This is because
technologies are developing so quickly, those
new entrants may require lots of capitals to
manufacture(high set up cost).
Threat of substitutes: Low The threat of substitutes is low, because there
are currently no affective product that will reduce
the amout of accidents happened in the market,
therefore, the threat of substitutes is not a
concern.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
low The rivalry among existing competitors is low, this
is because there is no well known brand in the
market, also, high barriers leads to few firms in
this industry, thus low competition.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The overall attractiveness of this industry is quite
high, even though buyers and suppliers have high power, but it has low threats and
competition, therefore it is a relatively attractive industry
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
The driving controller is for anyone who has a concern with their drunk driving behaviour,
especially those who usually go out and social with friends at nights. When people go out at
night to meet friends, they will need this driving controller due to reasons like: drivers may
underestimate the amout they going to drink, or they may have too much confident on their
driving skills after drinking a significant amount. In 2012, driver alcohol was a contributing
factor in 73 fatal crashes, 331 serious injury crashes and 933 minor injury crashes. These
crashes resulted in 93 deaths, 454 serious injuries and 1,331 minor injuries (NZ statistics,
2012). This shows that drunk driving accidents contribute a significant proportion between
all road accidents. Also a huge contributor in drunk driving is teenagers; Figures show that

4

4
during the past two years a total of 9703 teenagers were found guilty of drink driving in
New Zealand (Amy Maas, 2012 para. 2). Therefore customers will need a product that
have an effective function which will prevent them from drunk driving when they are
unconscious.
3.4 The Product and Service
The driving controller will satisfy customers as it contains three parts: alcohol detector,
engine stopper, and an app which connects the whole system. The general process is that
when alcohol sensor has detected alcohol in an excess level, it will sent information to the
engine stopper thus prevent the car from ignition, at last, it will connect with the app in
drivers phone and automatically sent message with location to the contact person which
has been stored previously. This device will satisfy customers needs and address to the core
problems and concerns.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
In order to make good quality products, its necessary to find suppliers and partners. Our
potential suppliers will be those who make quality alcodol sensors, and engine controllers
like highly qualified technicians and engineers. Apart from that, we need to find partners to
establish relationships with us which helps with promoting and marketing. A potential
partner will be a non-profit organization called IDDPA, they have different sponsors and
taking an active role in the prevention of drink driving by advocating safety messages to the
public(Drunk Driving Prevention Association, 2003). Another potential partner will be SADD,
its a highly effective peer education programme targeting secondary aged students across
New Zealand to reduce the harm caused on our roads by intoxicated drivers (Students
against driving drunk, 2014). Those partners can use campain and education to popularise
and promote our product, in return, we can also promote their actions and also offer them
our product at the lowerst price

3.6 Strategy: Differentiation
The strategy for our product will be Differentiation. This driving controller can be installed
into any vehicle, therefore it focuses on broad market, as one part of this product have
control on the engine, and all three parts are supported by specific information system,
therefore high technologies are required, so this product is relatively high cost.

5

5
Because this is a product that minimise safety issues for drunk drivers, thus perfect quality
are required in this situation, customer are likely to pay for an effective and high quality
product which can keep them safe from drunk driving. Therefore the product focuses on
broad market, high cost.
The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology development
The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology Development.
The most important value chain activity will be Technology development, because the type
of product that we are designing is not widely used by the general public, therefore lots of
researches are required, enable us to provide high quality and effective product and follow
our vision, new and advanced technologies are needed, it is a product that aims to satisfy all
drunk drivers, thus it has a differentiation strategy.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. PRODUCT TESTING PROCESS - This process allows the product testing department to
make a sample of this product (prototype), and run through the whole driving controller
system, and this process is supported by product testing support system. This process aims
to test out the imperfections and any improvements that can be made.

3.8.2. PRODUCT ONLINE ORDERING PROCESS This process is important because our product
need to be installed in vehicles, customers can ask for installing guide or book a time to let
us install(if the location allows), this process is supported by decision support system. Online
ordering is an essential process but it can influence the whole organisation significantly. The
web designing department need to make the ordering process as clear, easy, and carefree
as possible, otherwise customers may want to cancel the order.

3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. PRODUCT TESTING SUPPORT SYSTEM This system will support the prototyping
process, it will test the product by run through the whole process with the prototype and
test out any part that are not stable enough or have latent danger, the result will be send
automatically to the production department which enable them to fix imperfections and to
make decisions on the improvement of this product.
3.10. 2. RESEARCH SUPPORT SYSTEM This system is used when researches on technologies
or other researches are required. When production department are making improvement
on this product, they may need to research about the specific technologys information such
as cost, service life, publics reaction etc, therefore this system will help deparment to
choose the most suitable improvement that can be made thus enables a more effective
product.
3.10. 3. TRANSACTION SUPPORT SYSTEM - This system allows the process of sale faster and
easier, it will automates the process and also make a record for both business and
customer. Because this system support many people to operate at the same time ,
therefore it can save significantly amount of time , which allows business to focus on other
processes, e.g. improvement.

CONCLUSION
Overall, driving controller is an effective product for drunk drivers, because it has not only
kept drivers safe by locking the engine but it also sent messages to family/friends, so they
wont worry about the driver. This product is lying in a quite attractive industry with
differentiation strategy, the relatively high cost is because of the high technology and
information system that has been used. We believe that with the help of our suppliers and
partners, this device will help us to achieve our vision, and will be a popular, high quality
and widely used product.
