KNOWING AUCKLANDS TRANSPORT
INTRODUCTION
In a recent report, Auckland Council (2013) indicates that AT (Auckland
Transport) operates the public transport Real Time Passenger Information
System (RTPIS) which has not been performing to customer expectations.
This supports the Underlying issue that Aucklanders arent using public transport
because the public transportation systems are inconvenient in terms of
notifications and availability. In a recent report, Auckland Transport (2013)
indicated that totalled 69,277,456 passengers use Aucklands transport this is
only 50% (approximately) of the population in Auckland, which is 1.377 million.
We would create an application that is available on all forms of technology where
this application integrates all notification systems on to one platform with
connected networks with mapping satellite technologies and precise, clear
information which is available in one application.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To intergrate and improve ways to easily access information for public transport to the vast
variety of Aucklanders so that they can make wiser decisions in their journey using public
transport.

3.2 Industry Analysis: Public transport notification systems
Industry: The industry is public transport notification systems in Auckland.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: LOW
Buyer power will be low because Auckland
Transport is the only service that provides
services that notify public of public
transportation services as they are a
controlled organisation of Auckland Council
(Auckland Transport, 2013) or in
retrospect, a government organisation
which caters for all public transport.
Supplier power: HIGH
Supplier power for this industry will be high
because there is a lot of services available,
as the only company in this industry
Auckland Transport has access to a wide
variety of suppliers as they are connected
to other government departments like New
Zealand Transport Agency, etc. (Auckland
Transport, 2014)
Threat of new entrants: LOW
The threat of substitutes for this industry is
low because there are no major forms of
substitutes as there is only an alternative of
word to mouth communication or
knowledge from the constant reminder of
catching that particular
Threat of substitutes:
outside industry
Low
The threat of substitutes for this industry is
low because there are no major forms of
substitutes as there is only an alternative of
word to mouth communication or
knowledge from the constant reminder of
catching that particular
Rivalry among existing
competitors:inside
industry
low
The industry does not pose any major
rivalries as other alternatives public
transport users will use is the use of
timetables in paper form or use the existing
application of the AT app (ITunes 2014).

Overall attractiveness of the industry: This industry is unattractive because it is a
sub-industry in which it comes under the overall public transport industry. This
focused industry combined with the fact that it is a government entity means
that it will be extremely hard to enter, sustain and make even a decent profit for
companies enquiring to enter this market.

3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
The customer group is Aucklanders who are centralised in urban centres
(hospitals, malls, city centre, work places, etc.)
Aucklanders need a system that is fully flexible in terms of how many
platforms its available on. Heather (2013) mentioned that 88% New
Zealanders use a portable device that is connected to the internet, this
indicates the need for the focus to be incorporated with a digital format.
Customers also need to know that the application is reliable where ever
there is an internet connection, and even if there isnt a connection they
need to know enough information to interpret a quick and easy journey.
Customers need to have an accurate application that has real time
accuracy so that they can have more knowledge in how they can make
travelling adjustments to automate their own journey travelling time.
3.4 The Product and Service

This application will achieve all of these needs explained in the customers wants
and needs section.
The application will be an application that is easily downloadable on both the
iTunes app store (itunes.2014) and google play apps store (Google,2014) these
two application stores are one of the most used stores of applications especially
for android, cell phones and any other type of portable device that has
application adaptability.
The application will include the paper standardized timetables found anywhere if
there is no internet connection provided with google maps (2014) having a
snapshot of the entire map of Auckland with all the bus routes imprinted in the
application. This will achieve the need for reliability that this application can be
found anywhere and anytime the transportation services are available.
With internet connection there will be a real time tracking system of the chosen
public transportation (2014) with a people counting system (Fortress security -
2014) inside the chosen transport which achieves the need for accuracy as it will
achieve and automate journeys because it gives a more accurate snapshot of
their chosen journey so that they can make their own decisions of the quickest
way to their destination which achieves the need for accurate information.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners

Smudge Applications (Smudge, 2013) We will use this company to
establish a well-rounded application because of their partnerships within

5

5
their networking systems with other companies like Vodafone, Stuff, etc.
(Smudge, 2013) and that it is a New Zealand based applications
development company. They are flexible in creating applications on a
variety of platforms like the iPhone, iPad and iPod series (iTunes, 2014)
and android and Windows Apps (Windows 2013)
Auckland transport (2013) Auckland Transport is the basis of this
application in terms of what it shows and Auckland transport will set up
the actual time modules, time tables and other equipment needed through
their open recruiting system of private companies (Auckland Transport,
2014).
Google Maps (2014) We will partner with Google maps to place our
tracking beacons in their mapping systems which will show in our
applications, google maps will be ideal because it is versatile in terms of
its features and that its a worldwide system that is recognisable by the
vast majority of the population.
Fortress Security (2014) Although this company is a security firm, it can
be adapted to a counting system in which can be used for one of the
aspects of the application proposed where they have a successful counting
system even under pressure when counting large amount of people at one
time which is essential for the increasing population of Auckland.

3.6 Strategy: COST LEADERSHIP

The Porters generic strategy that will be focused on is cost leadership. The
competitive scope that we will focus on is the vast majority of Aucklanders that
are centralised in urban centres. Since this application is supposed to be
accessible to anyone, the price should be low in terms of how much it is bought
by in the application store of a price that is 20c, this will achieve customers
needs and accomplish the chosen porters generic strategy.

3.7 Value Chain Activity: MAKING THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE

This activity involves collating the resources collected to make the application
(i.e. Technicians, etc.) and developing the product and testing the product of its
functionability. This enables a functional application in which it achieves giving
Aucklanders reliable information through this application which is fully functional.

3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. MANAFACTURING PROCESS - This process will develop the actual application.
This process will start by IT department researching and collecting resources to
create the application, they will code the datasets of timetables, make
programmes within the application to create mapping systems integrating course
outlines to trackers on each form of transport in Auckland and combining each
function together into a working application.

CONCLUSION

This business proposal in creating an application for all Aucklanders to use will
create an extremely positive chain of effects in that it will ease congestion
through all access ways within urban areas in Auckland City, ease finances in
reducing transport for those who use public transport through the knowledge of
this application and even attain more Aucklanders to use public transport
because of the applications easily, usable and more relatable application on a
digital format which is incorporating to societies rapidly reliance on technology
today.
