1.

Scope
This specification is applicable for seal and strength welding of tube-to-tube sheet joints in
shell and tube heat exchangers, boilers, other pressure vessels and equipment.
This addendum shall be used in conjunction with EEMUA Publication No. 143:
Recommendations for Tube End Welding: Tubular Heat Transfer Equipment (Part 1 Ferrous Materials). It is intended to cover the procedures for tube end welding in both
ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The numbering system is the same as that in EEMUA
143.
Unless amended by this specification, all welding shall comply with the recommendations of
EEMUA 143, 1985.
Supplier shall advise of any proposed deviations from the recommendations of the EEMUA
publication and this specification at the bid stage.
Any relevant Process Licensor requirements are to be in accordance with the relevant
Project Specifications as referenced in the material requisition.

2.

Welding process and joint detail

2.5

(Added)

Where welds are included in tube sheet strength calculations, the test requirements of the
Design Code shall be applied in addition to EEMUA 143 and this specification.
Strength welded tube to tube sheet joints to have minimum two weld passes (weld runs).

3.

Qualification of Welding Procedure

3.5

(Added)

Only Buyer approved welding procedure specifications (WPS), with welding procedure
qualification records (WPQR) are to be used for welding, and shall be submitted as required
in the material requisition. Weld procedures shall reflect precise geometry of proposed tube
to tubesheet joint.
It is the responsibility of the Supplier to ensure all his and/or his sub-suppliers welding
procedures are submitted for approval before production commences.
3.6

(Added)

Only Buyer approved inspection and test procedures are to be used, and are to be submitted
where applicable as per material requisition requirement. Tube to tubesheet joint geometries
that are not identical to the proposed weld procedure shall be subject to full range of testing
in EEMUA Section 3.1 3.4. Results of any such testing shall be submitted to Buyer for
review and approval.

4.

Re Section 7.0, Preheat and Interpass Temperature

7.5

(Added)

For austenitic stainless steels the welding interpass temperature shall not exceed 150oC.
7.6

(Added)

For nickel-molybdenum and nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloys welding shall not be

carried out when base metal temperatures are in excess of 100 oC. Cooling in still air shall
be permitted to avoid excessive time delays during production.

5.

Re Section 8.0 Welding

8.5

(Added)

For cupronickels and nickel base alloys, special care shall be taken to ensure that paint,
crayons etc., containing lead, sulphur or compounds of lead and/or sulphur are not used at
any stage before or during fabrication, and all welding surfaces are free from carbonaceous
material before welding commences. Thermo crayons shall be also suitable (low halogen
content) for austenitic stainless steels.
8.6

(Added)

For stainless steels and non-ferrous alloys, only inert gas shielded welding processes shall be
used.

6.

Re Section 9.0 Post Weld Heat Treatment

9.4

(Added)

Only Buyer approved heat treatment procedures are to be used, and shall be submitted as
required in the material requisition.

7.

Re Section 12.0 Leak Detection

12.6

(Added)

The minimum leak path shown by all sections shall not be less than the tube wall thickness.

8.

Re Section 13.0 Repairs

13.4

(Added)

The cost of all repairs shall be borne by the Supplier.
13.5

(Added)

Welding found to contain cracks require the whole of the weld profile to be re-prepared and
re-welded. Magnetic particle inspection (where applicable), or dye penetrant examination
shall be used to ascertain that all cracks have been removed.
