SECONDARY WING (2014-15) CLASS X- HOLIDAY HOMEWORK
Holidays are to enjoy and also to learn. The innovative minds are getting an Inter-disciplinary project on Electricity production, transmission and conservation for Science and Social Science (Lab Activity)
After food and water; energy is our most basic need. All activities require energy to perform. All conventional sources of energy are exhaustible. At the current rate of consumption, known reserves of petroleum will be exhausted in about 35 years, natural gases in about 50 years and coal sometime within 200 years. This theme is expected to make the children think of various ways and means for producing electricity by new techniques from conventional and nonconventional sources.
Objective: Students will be able to 1. Make innovative model for producing electricity along with chart to show working principle 2. Design an info-booklet on power generation, methods of generating electricity and impact of conventional and non conventional sources of energy on environment and ecosystem.
Procedure: 1. Students will be divided into eight groups of 4-5 students each 2. Each group will make a working model/ exhibit for producing electricity from conventional/ non-conventional sources of energy Each group will be given one of the following sources of energy (a) Wind energy (b) Water energy (c) Solar energy (d) Biomass 3. Group members will divide the work under teachers guidance for above in the school before holidays, will collect relevant material during holidays and will assemble it in school after holidays. 4. Each group will also be given one of the following River Valley Project: (a) Tennessee Valley Project (b) Damodar Valley Project (c) Three Gorges Project (d) Hoover Dam Project 5. Group members will divide the work under teachers guidance for above in the school before holidays, will collect relevant material during holidays and will assemble the information to make the info booklet in the class after holidays. 6. Info booklet will contain the following: (a) History of Valley Project (b) Location (river and country) (c) Construction year (d) Power generation (e) Location on map (f) Impact of conventional and non conventional sources of energy on environment and ecosystem. 2
(g) Various methods of generating electricity and comparison between them.
Presentation: 1. Dimensions of the model/exhibit: 4 ft x 2 ft. 2. Use your own innovative ideas by using best out of waste. 3. The size of the booklet should be standard A-4 sheets. 4. The booklet should be as eye-catching as possible and no. of pages should be between 8 to 10.
EXAMPLE: A model to demonstrate the process of thermoelectric production Take a table-tennis ball and make three slits into it. Put semicircular fins cut out of a metal sheet into these slits. Pivot the tennis ball on an axle through its centre with a straight metal wire fixed to a rigid support. Ensure that the tennis ball rotates freely about the axle. Now connect a cycle dynamo to this. Connect a bulb in series. Direct a jet of water or steam produced in a pressure cooker at the fins.
