Tutorial Sheet 3 & 4
Subject: Digital Communication Branch: III ECE II sem

1. Determine the minimum bandwidth for a BPSK modulator with a carrier frequency of 40MHz
and an input bit rate of 500 bps.
2. The bit stream 1011100011 is to be transmitted using DPSK. Determine the encoded sequence
and transmitted phase sequence.
3. In a QPSK system, the bit rate of NRZ stream is 10 Mbps and carrier frequency is 1GHz. Find the
symbol rate of transmission and bandwidth requirement of the channel. Sketch the power
spectral density of the QPSK signal.
4. The output of a digital computer is at a rate of 64 Kbps. If the roll off factors (i) =1, (ii) =0.5,
(iii) =0.25, (iv) =0, find the bandwidth required to transmit the data in each case.
5. A bipolar binary signal is applied as an input to an integrator and dump receiver such that
S

(t)=+A and S

(t)=-A volts, for the duration of 0 to T sec. If P(s

,
A=10mV and transmission data rate of 10Kbps, (i) find probability of error, P
e
(ii) if the bit rate
is increased to 10 Mbps, what value of A is needed to attain the same value of P
e
as in part (i).
6. A received signal is 1 mV for T
b
second intervals with equal probability. The signal is
accompanied by white Gaussian noise with a psd of 10
-10
watts/Hz. The receiver integrates the
signal plus noise synchronously for T
b
second duration and decodes the signal by comparing the
integrator output with 0. Find (i) the maximum signalling rate (minimum value of T
b
) such that
P
e
=10

. (ii) if actual signalling takes place at the rate found in (i) what is the signal amplitude
to maintain P
e
=10

?
7. In a binary transmission, one of the messages is represented by a rectangular pulse x(t). The
other message is transmitted by the absence of the pulse. Calculate the signal to noise ratio at
t=T. Assuming white noise with psd N
0
/2. Also sketch the impulse response of the matched
filter and output of the matched filter.
8. If the rectangular pulse is applied to a RC filter shown in fig. instead of matched filter, calculate
the maximum signal to noise ratio
max
that can be obtained by RC filter and compare it with
that obtained by corresponding matched filter.

9. Specify a matched filter receiver for the signal s(t) shown in fig. below and sketch the filter
output as a function of time.

10. A polar binary signal s

(t) is +1 V or -1V pulse during the interval [ 0, T ]. Additive white noise

is added to the signal. Determine the maximum
