Geomatics (also known as geospatial technology or geomatics engineering, or geomatic
engineering, gomatique inFrench) is the discipline of gathering, storing, processing, and

Overview and etymologyedit!
,eomatics is a relatively new scientific term, coined -y Pollock and Wright in "./., with the intention
of com-ining the terms geodesyand geoinformatics. 0t includes the tools and techniques used in land
surveying, remote sensing, cartography, geographic information systems (,0&), glo-al navigation
satellite systems (,1&, ,2#3A&&, ,alileo, 4ompass), photogrammetry, geography and related
forms of earth mapping. 5he term was originally used in 4anada, -ecause it is similar in origin to
-oth French and *nglish, -ut has since -een adopted -y the 0nternational #rgani6ation for
&tandardi6ation, the (oyal 0nstitution of 4hartered &urveyors, and many other international
authorities, although some (especially in the 7nited &tates) have shown a preference for the
term geospatial technology .
"!
5he related field of hydrogeomatics covers the area associated with surveying work carried out on,
a-ove or -elow the surface of the sea or other areas of water. 5he older term of hydrographics was
considered too specific to the preparation of marine charts, and failed to include the -roader concept
of positioning or measurements in all marine environments.
A geospatial network is a network of colla-orating resources for sharing and coordinating
geographical data, and data tied to geographical references. #ne e+ample of such a network is
the #pen ,eospatial 4onsortium's efforts to provide ready global access to geographic information.
A num-er of university departments which were once titled surveying, survey engineering
or topographic science have re8titled themselves as geomatics or geomatic engineering.
5he rapid progress, and increased visi-ility, of geomatics since the "..9s has -een made possi-le
-y advances in computer hardware, computer science, and software engineering, as well as air-orne
and space o-servation remote sensing technologies.
5he science of deriving information a-out an o-:ect using a sensor without physically contacting it is
called remote sensing, which is a part of geomatics.
