Modelling the mooring system
InHydroD/Wadamthemooringsystemcanbemodelledintwoalternativeways:
Usinganchorelements
Givinganadditionalmassandrestoringmatrix
Theanchorelementsareasetoflinearspringswithagivenpretension.Thestiffnessofthespringsis
specifiedinboththehorizontalandverticaldirection.Thehorizontaldirectionisdefinedbythe
directionofthemooringline.
Theaccumulatedrestoringduetoallthemooringlinescanalternativelybegivenbyarestoringmatrix.
Theaccumulatedpretensionscanalternativelybegivenbyamassmatrix.
Therearesomeprosandconsrelatedtobothwaysofmodellingthemooringsystem.
Themostimportantbenefitofusingtheanchorelementsisthattheforcesareactingatawelldefined
pointonthestructure(thefairleadandwindlasspoint).Thustheloadingfromthemooringsystemcan
becarriedovertothestructuralanalysisasnodalloads.Whenthisforceismodelledbyarestoring
matrixyougetthecorrectforceonthestructure,butthereisnoinformationabouthowitisdistributed
sothereisnowelldefinedwaytorepresentitasaloadonthestructuralmodel.
Themostimportantbenefitoftheadditionalmatrixapproachisthatthepretensionisrepresentedasa
mass,whichiswhatitactuallyis,sinceitisduetotheweightofthemooringlines.Thismeansthatthe
naturalperiodscomputedfromtheequationsofmotionwillbemorecorrect.
