On May 10, 2014, at about 6:30 PM patrol officers received a call of a missing 84-year- old Alzheimer's patient who was last seen on the 800 block of Larch Street in Cloquet at about 5:00 PM.
After an extensive search, at about 9:00 PM the man was located safe and in relatively good health near Morning Star Lane in the city of Cloquet, approximately 3 miles from his residence. Cloquet Area Fire District paramedics assessed the person and transported him to a local hospital for an evaluation.
The Cloquet Police Department was assisted in the search by the Cloquet Area Fire District, Fond du Lac Police Department and a K-9 unit from the Department of Natural Resources.
DETECTIVES:
As reported in last week's letter, Cloquet detectives and Cloquet officers responded to a residence on Stephen Road involving a report of a door being kicked in and a computer monitor and possibly a keyboard were stolen. This week detectives followed up on some information that was provided to them and identified a suspect. The suspect was questioned regarding the burglary. Information received from that interview along with other evidence has been submitted to the Carlton County Attorney's Office for review of potential charges.
TRAINING:
One of the recommendations out of the law enforcement study was to develop or purchase training system software to track and document the training of staff in house. The administrative staff has created an Excel spreadsheet that electronically documents individual officer training from year-to-year. There may be some growing pains with this at first, but it will give us the ability more accurately track individual officer's training moving forward.
Several of the department's personnel took part in the annual mandated Defensive Tactics training. This training took place at the Carlton County Transportation Building and was put on by Deputy Sheriff Randy Cloquet Police Department Weekly Newsletter
Cloquet Police Department Weekly Newsletter Page 2 Roberts and Corporal Mark Laine of our department. Both Roberts and Laine are certified in providing this mandatory training. There will be a second Defensive Tactics class offered towards the end of this month or the first part of June for those who could not attend. Both staff from our department and the Carlton County Sheriff's Department attended this training.
MISCELLANEOUS:
On Thursday a resident of Wheat Ridge, Colorado who happened to be in Cloquet visiting her mother stopped into the Police Department and made a donation in the amount of $100 to the K-9 fund. The resident stated that she follows our K-9 program and the progress of Raja, and felt it is a worthwhile program and wanted to show her support. A great gesture indeed!
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
On Thursday Detective Darrin Berg was asked to give a presentation on the effects of illegal drugs on people. The presentation was requested from the Human Development Center (HDC). The presentation focused on the ability to recognize certain signs of impairment in individuals who the staff at HDC may come into contact with. Detective Berg also shared safety tips with the staff for dealing with people who are potentially under the influence of drugs.
