How would you like to be controlled by someone for 20 years, but only
being controlled by terror and fear? Just imagine waking up everyday scared of what
the days holds ahead. Saddam Hussein was a ruthless dictator of Iraq. The impact of
Saddam Hussein regin was profoundly horrible.

Born on April 28, 1937 in Tikrit, Iraq, Saddam grew up with his mom, after being
abandoned by his dad. His mom didnt take very good care of him and moved to live
with his uncle. His uncle worked for the national Baath party in Iraq (Bio.com). Saddam
also attended the nationalistic Al-Karth secondary school in Baghdad in 1957.
(Bio.com). At age 20, Hussein joined the Baath party. The Baath party was a political
party founded in Syria by three members. On October 7, 1959 Saddam Hussein and
other members of the Baath party attempted to assassinate Iraqis then - president
(History1900s.com). Saddam played a key role In the coup which brought the party to
power in Iraq. Later on in 1964 Saddam was arrested after another coup attempt. He
ended spending 18 months in prison (Gale.cengage.com). While Saddam was there he
was tortured, and beaten, before he escaped in July 1967.

The Baath party was made up of ruthless men who were willing to do anything to
take control of the Iraqis government (History1900s.com). Hussein was giving a spot in

the Baath party regional command which was the highest decision making body in Iraq
(Gale.com). Once Saddam gained control of the Government, the Baath party showed
Iraqi citizens that it was willing to use violence and threats to remain in power. Saddam
ended up involving his country in two major wars over 12 years (Gale.com). Later in
1959, Saddam tried to murder Iraqis military leader. A few years later he became the
president of Iraq in 1979. He ruled from 1979 through 2003 (Gale.com). Saddam was
also a military dictator.

Saddam Hussein had a huge impacted on society. He used fear and terror to
stay in power. Hussein imprisoned many people and tortured them to death. He did this
very frequently. There was absolutely no freedom of expression, no freedom to travel,
foreign newspaper were not allowed nor in contact with any foreigner. If anyone who
crossed him or disobey him would be tortured or executed. Saddam Hussein was a very
ruthless dictator. Even some of the Baath party officials pointed out bullet wounds in a
corpse of Qassams. So over the next few months baathists turned Iraq's royal palace
into a torture chamber for their enemies. Some of the prisoners who survived were
questioned and tortured by Saddam Hussein.

Throughout Iraq, hundreds of television, and radio broadcasting facilities were
owned and separated by broadcasting and television organization of the MCI
(Spywarrior.com). The print media in Iraq was owned by the Government
(Spywarrior.com). The Al-Thawrah, which is the largest newspaper company in Iraq is
published by the Baath party. In Iraq the Government controls everything you read in
the newspaper, magazines, anything you see on television, or hear on the radio, with no

exposure to outside information (Spywarrior.com). A lot of the broadcastings were
scheduled between 6pm- 7pm and continued as late as 3am- 5am. Saddam Hussein
obviously used broadcastings to show everyone his power he had (Baghdad Betty &
Iraqi Jack). He was one of the most murderous tyrants of the 20th Century (Scott
Simon). If you argued or disagreed with Saddam, you would be dead the next day
(Fred Francis). The first 20 years he killed 20,00 Sunnis ("Fred Francis"). Saddam
always wore a military suit of his own and carried around with him a golden AK-47
("Sharon Weinberger"). He even had a huge statue of himself made (Spywarrior.com).

Hussein was a very dangerous man in Iraq. He was a mad man. There was
30,00 Iraq and Iranian deaths and Saddam killed most of the people. Husssein killed,
tortured, raped and terrorized the Iraqi people and his neighbors for two decades ( Life
Under Saddam Hussein). The majority of people that were killed were Muslims (The
White House). Saddams campaign of terror against the Kurds killed at least 50,00 and
possibly as many as 100,00 Kurds. The Iraqi Regime used chemical agents to include
mustard gas and nerve agents in attacks against at least 40 Kurdish villages in 1987-
1988 (The White House). In Iraq for the past five years 400,00 children under the age
of 5 died of malnutrition and diseases preventively but died because of the regine under
which they were living under the oil-for-food program, The international community tried
to give Iraq people adequate supplies of food and medicine but the reign blocked
sufficient access for international workers to do this ( Life Under Saddam Hussein).

After the attack on September 11th (911) in 2003 Hussein was planning
terrorist attacks in the U.S, as result the U.S invaded Iraq and destroyed their

Government and military (Bio.com). He managed to escape this some how, but on
December 13, 2003 he was found hiding in an under ground hole and captured by the
U.S (Bio.com). Saddam had been on the run for about six months hiding ("Bill Harlow").
2006, Saddam was convicted to crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by
being hung("Bill Harlow").

Hussein will be remembered as a man who swanderdly the tremendous
assets of a crowd of Iraqi people. He killed millions of people who put the lives of
hundreds of thousands at risk. Also he did things to his country which will have
decades and decades of effects. The people in Iraq today are no longer controlled by
Saddam Hussein and will no longer have to wake up in fear and can go about their day
being free.
