1.0 COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introduction to the basic concepts in fundamentals of statistics,
with the prime focus on probability theory. It reviews the fundamental of data
representation and descriptive statistics. Students will then study algebra of sets,
counting principles and definition of random variables associated with simple
and conditional events. Methods of calculating the probability distribution
function of discrete and continuous random variables will be explored. Its
expected values will also be discussed. Special probability functions like Binomial,
Poisson and Normal will be discussed.
2.0 COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
a. Apply appropriate descriptive statistical procedures in analyzing a body of
data.
b. explain basic concepts in probability theory.
c. recognize types of discrete and continuous probability distribution.
d. solve real life problems using probability distributions.
