a. In partnership with GRuB(Garden-Raised Bounty), Olympia High School (OHS) provides
farm-based academic learning opportunities to disengaged high school students The
Lowes toolbox for education grant would help purchase the necessary tools for OHS
students to utilize at a donated, 5-acre farm.

a. The overall budget for the Bear GRuB program is about $95,000 to cover staffing,
stipends, and general farm supplies

a. 4,000. This will cover the cost to supply the farm with necessary equipment for the
students to use.

a. In partnership with community organizations, $95,000 has been either raised or
allocated for the operation of the new farm site.

i. Without the grant we would attempt to secure funding through additional grant
and community resources.
ii. Other sources of funds for the farm include Olympia High School, GRuB, and
Olympia School District.
10. Project Schedule
a. The new farm is currently being used, however at a limited capacity. The farm lacks
necessary tools and power to give students the opportunity to cultivate the land. The
goal is to double the farm production this year for the Olympia School District cafeterias.
The funding would be a one-time resource to provide tools for the new site.
11. Project Description (500 words)
a. What is the mission of your project?
i. The mission of the GRuB school expansion Project is to creatively increase farm-
based leadership and learning opportunities. Students apply academic learning
to leading community food work and through that process, develop strong
leadership skills and a greater passion for their community. In addition students
earn credits in Biology, American History, and Horticulture.
ii. In particular, the new farm will specialize in producing vegetables in the fall,
winter, and early spring for school cafeteria needs. The students will focus
learning on year-round farm production planning, seasonal production
extension, technology, winter greenhouse production, and general sustainable
agriculture practices. Students will also have access to freshly harvested foods
to take home to their own families.
b. What will this project mean for your school?
i. Disengaged students have an opportunity to become interested in school again.
This gave Olympia High School an alternative option to learning for students
who struggled in the traditional school environment. Through this new site,
Olympia High School Students are able to enroll in a 4-block class where they
can earn credits in Biology, American History, and Horticulture. In addition, they
participate in year-round activities and apply academic learning to lead
community food efforts, build backyard gardens with low-income families, and
educate children and adults on hunger and local food issues.
12. Project Grant Reason: What makes your project especially deserving of a Lowes Toolbox for
education grant? Why does your school need help funding the project (100 words)
a. The program has demonstrated tremendous results. Since its start two years ago, GPA
has increased, discipline issues have decreased, and credits earned per student
increased. This program has been successful in securing large scale funding for space
and staffing. However, it lacks the basic essential tools for success. As a new site, the
grant would help complete the detailed funding.
13. Project Volunteer Plan: detailed description of your groups volunteer plan (600 words)
The program is designed as a 4 period block class. Students may enroll through the high school.
Specifically for the Bear Grub program, staff members are funded through the school district and
students will be engaged in farm production for local schools cafeterias.
