WHAT IS A PREFIX?
1) Sometimes knowing the meaning of parts of words will help you understand the
word without looking in the dictionary. For example the prefix pre- at the
beginning of a word often means before. Another example is Re- which
means again. The main part of a word is called base the part added before
the base is a prefix, and the part added after the base is a suffix.
EXAMPLE: Preoccupation

(Pre + occupy + ation)
Prefix+ base+ suffix

WHAT IS A COMPOUND WORD?
2) Other times, if you are unable to find the word in the dictionary, breaking the
word into parts may help you find it. These are called Compound words.
EXAMPLE: Framework is composed of two words stuck together.
Frame+Work
*Framework is a compound word and it does not have a base word. Both
frame and work give us a clue on the meaning of the word.

INSTRUCTIONS:
A) What base words, prefixes or compound words can you find in the
underlined words? Write your answers. (No Dictionary)
B) Guess the meaning for the underlined words in these sentences? You can use
the Prefix List to make your guesses. Write your answers. (No Dictionary)
Instructions: Read number one. It is an example on how to break a word
down into prefix+base in order to interpret its meaning. Some words dont
have prefixes, intead they will be compound word. You need to do TWO
THINGS: 1. Break the word down into its parts. 2. Guess the meaning of the
word based on its parts.
