Introduction
Technical description
This brochure describes the properties and performance
characteristics of Dow STYRO FO AM * insulation boards.
STYRO FO AM blue extruded polystyrene foam boards are
designed to provide thermal insulation in a wide range of
construction and building applications.
STYRO FO AM boards are available in different grades to suit
particular applications:-
FLO O RM ATE*
WALLM ATE*
RO O FM ATE*
STYRO FO AM
Composition
STYRO FO AM boards consist of
extruded polystyrene foam.
The extrusion process produces a
uniform structure of small closed cells
which give STYRO FO AM its unique
characteristics.
STYRO FO AM products do not contain
hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)
and comply with the requirements
of EC Regulation No 2037/2000
(1 O ct 2000) on substances which
deplete the ozone layer.
STYRO FO AM X products are blown
with hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and A
products with carbon dioxide.
Surface characteristics
Dow STYRO FO AM boards are blue.
All boards have a smooth
homogeneous skin on both sides
with the exception of RO O FM ATE
LG-X, RO O FM ATE TT-X and
STYRO FO AM I B-X.
* Trademark of the Dow Chemical Company
Structural
STYRO FO AM boards are available in
a range of compressive strengths to
suit different loadbearing
requirements.
Fire
I nformation on aspects of fire
performance of extruded polystyrene
in building applications is given in
BS 6203: 1991, ' Fire characteristics
and fire performance of expanded
polystyrene materials used in building
applications' .
STYRO FO AM products contain a
flame retardant additive to inhibit
accidental ignition from a small fire
source, but they are combustible and
if exposed to an intense fire may
burn rapidly.
I n most countries fire classifications
are based on small scale tests which
may not reflect the reaction of the
material under actual fire conditions.
Polystyrene products will melt when
brought into direct contact with high
temperature heat sources: for Dow
STYRO FO AM boards the
recommended maximum continuous
operation temperature is 75C.
During shipment, storage, installation
and use do not expose the boards to
flame or other ignition sources.
Water/moisture
STYRO FO AM is highly resistant to
water absorption. STYRO FO AM
boards are very resistant to the
passage of water vapour and are
unaffected by repeated freeze/thaw
cycles.
Biological
STYRO FO AM has low susceptibility
to rot; mould or fungal growth is
therefore minimised.
Chemical
STYRO FO AM boards are resistant to
most commonly occurring
construction materials such as lime,
cement, plaster, anhydrous gypsum,
solvent-free bituminous compounds,
water-based wood preservatives, as
well as alcohols, acids and alkalis.
Certain organic materials such as
solvent-based wood preservatives,
coal tar and derivatives (creosote),
paint thinners and common solvents
(e.g. acetone, ethyl acetate, petrol,
toluene and white spirit) will attack
STYRO FO AM , resulting in softening,
shrinkage and possible dissolution,
with a consequent loss of
performance.
The use of solvent-free adhesives is
recommended. Advice on
compatibility with polystyrene foam
should be sought from the adhesive
manufacturers.
Sunlight
Protect STYRO FO AM from prolonged
exposure to intense sunlight to
prevent degradation of the surface of
the board.
Durability
Properly installed, STYRO FO AM
boards have a service life comparable
with that of the building or structure.
Environmental
STYRO FO AM is non bio-degradable
and does not present an
environmental hazard.
Disposal
STYRO FO AM can be:-
recycled mechanically.
recycled chemically.
used as land-fill
incinerated under control to
recover the energy content.

FLO O RM ATE is the STYRO FO AM
Solution for insulating floors.
FLO O RM ATE insulation is available in a
range of compressive strengths to match
the loading requirements of individual
projects.
FLO O RM ATE insulation can be installed
under or over the slab in groundbearing
concrete floors and is suitable for use on
suspended beam and block or timber
floors.
WALLM ATE CW-X is the STYRO FO AM
Solution for insulating cavity walls.
WALLM ATE CW-X insulation can be used
as partial cavity fill without increasing the
risk of water penetration.
The low water absorption of WALLM ATE
CW-X insulation enables it to be used in
cavitywalls without any lossof
performance. WALLM ATE CW-X boards
are sized to co-ordinate with common
brick and block sizes.
STYRO FO AM I B-X is the STYRO FO AM
solution for insulating walls internally.
STYRO FO AM I B-X insulation enables the
thermal performance of existing walls to
be improved without affecting the
exterior appearance of the building.
The insulation is lightweight and easy to
cut, making it suitable for use around
existing details. STYRO FO AM I B-X
insulation has a ready keyed surface
which will take a light plaster finish.
RO O FM ATE PR-X and RO O FM ATE RL-X
are the STYRO FO AM Solutions for
insulating warm pitched roofs at rafter
line. They enable a continuous layer of
insulation to be formed at rafter line.
RO O FM ATE PR-X insulation is intended
for roofs with rafters 50mm wide at
600mm centres. The boards are rebated,
allowing the insulation to sit above (30 or
50mm) and between the rafters.
RO O FM ATE RL-X boards are for
installation above the rafters.
The insulation is supplied in large boards
for rapid coverage.
RO O FM ATE RL-X is the
STYRO FO AM solution for insulating
single-ply roof decks. RO O FM ATE
RL-X boards provide a lightweight,
rigid substrate beneath light-coloured
single-ply polymeric membranes on
flat or low slope metal decked roofs.
The large area and high dimensional
stability of RO O FM ATE RL-X boards
minimises the installation time as
well as the number of fixings
required.
RO O FM ATE SL-X insulation is
intended for use on heavyweight
decks with a ballast layer of gravel or
concrete slabs.
I ts rot-resistance makes it ideal for
insulating roof gardens.
RO O FM ATE LG-X boards have a
10mm modified concrete topping on
the upper surface, eliminating the
need for separate ballast and making
it possible to gain the benefits of the
inverted roof on lightweight decks.
RO O FM ATE TT-X consists of
STYRO FO AM insulation boards with
an integral 20mm fibre reinforced
concrete topping which has an
attractive exposed aggregate finish.
RO O FM ATE TT-X boards are butt
edged, with a groove cut into two
opposing sides to take plastic locking
strips which increase resistance to
possible wind uplift.
RO O FM ATE RL-X is the
STYRO FO AM Solution for insulating
agricultural buildings. RO O FM ATE
RL-X insulation' s closed cell structure
means it is durable, maintaining its
performance in the most demanding
agricultural applications.
The boards will even withstand
pressure hosing.The tongue and
groove edge detail of RO O FM ATE
RL-X boards ensures tight joints
between boards.
RO O FM ATE SL-X and RO O FM ATE
LG-X are the STYRO FO AM Solutions
for insulating inverted roofs.
These boards are unaffected by the
conditions encountered on flat roofs
including wide fluctuations in
temperature or repeated freeze/thaw
cycles.

Handling and Storage
13
STYRO FO AM boards should be
stored on a clean, flat surface in an
area free from flammable or volatile
materials. When large quantities of
the boards are stored indoors,
the building should be ventilated to
allow a minimum of two air changes
per hour.
When stored for long periods in the
open, the boards should be protected
from direct sunlight to avoid
degradation. Light coloured plastic
sheeting is a suitable protective
cover. Avoid dark materials as
excessively high temperatures may
develop beneath them.
Solvent attack may occur if
STYRO FO AM boards are in direct
contact with materials that contain
volatile organic components
eg solvents. Care must be taken to
protect the boards from flames and
other sources of ignition during
storage and installation.
