The Anointing
Notes by Dr. A. L. Gill
Definition
The anointing is the enabling or impartation of Gods ability and power
upon an available and yielded vessel to do the supernatural works of
God.
Oil, a symbol of the Holy Spirit, throughout the Scriptures was poured
out, smeared, or rubbed on an individual when they were being anointed
for a specific ministry or task.
The words translated anoint or anointing in the Old Testament Hebrew or
ew Testament Greek languages means to pour out, smear, or rub in.
Christ Means The Anointed One
The Greek word which was transliterated !"hrist# means !The $nointed
One.# %t is the Greek e&uivalent of the Hebrew word that was
transliterated !'essiah.#
Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,
consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ esus,
The word !anoint# in its different forms such as anointed, anointing, and
anointed one was used ()( times.
The name !"hrist# was used *+, times. Two times the name !'essiah#
was used in the ew Testament so there were a total of -., references in
the Scriptures, mostly in the ew Testament that relate to the word
!$noint.#
The $nointing is a person /esus is the "hrist, The $nointed One. The
$nointed is the Spirit of the Son which is upon his corporate body. He is
the Head and we are His 0ody 1the church2.
2
Aaron
$aron typified "hrist as our High 3riest.
4ead the instructions for the anointing of $aron by pouring oil on the
head.

Psal's 133:# +t is like the precious oil upon the head, ,unning down the

The further the anointing flowed, down to the edge 1hem2 the stronger the
anointing became. $s the anointing of a spiritual father flowed down
generationally to his spiritual sons 1and daughters2 there was a double
portion multiplication as was passed from 5li6ah to his spiritual son,
5lisha. 7ith each successive generation of faithful !sons# a double
portion to double portion generational anointing passed from generation
to generation.
+saiah $:- .f the increase of His govern'ent and peace there will be no
end,
Aarons Sons
$arons Son typified 0elievers as 3riests.
To receive the anointing, $arons son was to wear the garments of His
father.
/u'bers #0:#3&#1 And the 2.,3 spoke to 4oses and Aaron in 4ount

covered 'e with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroo' decks

The Fathers Anointing
There is a hunger for spiritual fathers.
4alachi %:=,; >ehold, + will send you !li8ah the prophet before the
co'ing of the great and dreadful day of the 2.,3( And he will turn the
hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to
their fathers, lest + co'e and strike the earth with a curse(5
A Spiritual Father
$ spiritual father who has received !the Spirit of 5li6ah# has received the
ability to inpart that same anointing in double portion to those like 5lisha
who are faithful spiritual sons.
1 Corinthians %:1%&1- + do not write these things to sha'e you, but as 'y
beloved children + warn you( ?or though you 'ight have ten thousand
instructors in Christ, yet you do not have 'any fathers7 for in Christ
esus + have begotten you through the gospel( Therefore + urge you,
i'itate 'e( ?or this reason + have sent Ti'othy to you, who is 'y
beloved and faithful son in the 2ord, who will re'ind you of 'y ways in
Christ, as + teach everywhere in every church(
!Ten thousand %nstructors# is the Greek word !paidagogos# and means
!boy8leader# $ servant8office to take children to school. They were
involved in training and disciplining of the children, but not in the
impartation of knowledge to adults.
$s the !Spirit of 5li6ah# is being released God is restoring spiritual
fathers who are able to impart revelation knowledge with a double
portion anointing.
4
The "hurch is to be thought of as the family of God, the 9ather. %t is not
to be thought of as an organi:ation, association, or denomination. The
relationships should be as fathers to sons and daughters. 7e are His
body, His bride, His family.
!Spiritual 9athers# is not gender specific even as being !the bride of
"hrist# is not gender specific. %t is spiritual fathers and mothers imparting
to faithful spiritual sons and daughters in double portion.
e!ei"ing the Fathers Anointing
$aron and his four sons was a !fivefold ministry.# The &ualification for
priestly ministry was !sonship#, not !membership. They were chosen by
God, and not by man. %t began by $aron, the spiritual father being
anointed with oil which is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. 5ven as $arons
sons were able to receive their fathers anointing, faithful sons and
daughters today are able to receive their spiritual fathers anointing in
double portion.
Psal' 133:1&3 >ehold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to
dwell together in unity@ +t is like the precious oil upon the head, running
down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his
gar'ents( +t is like the dew of Her'on, decending upon the 'ountains of
Aion7 for there the 2ord co''anded the blessing B life forever'ore(
"hrist the anointed one is the Head. The 0eard speaks of the maturity of
spiritual fathers and that same anointing flowing down upon the garments
which typifies spiritual sons. $s with double portion to double portion,
the farther the anointing flows the greater the anointing becomes. $s the
oil flows down the garment it becomes thicker and thicker even so the
stronger the anointing becomes as it flows down from generation to
generation. 7e see a picture of this as the woman with the issue of blood
reached down to touch the hem of /esus garment. Spiritual sons and
daughters must be aligned under the head and under spiritual fathers to
receive the generational double portion anointing.
#li$ah
%n ( ;ings (.< =,8=), 5li6ah was sent to a fatherless family, the widow of
>arephath who was powerless to provide for herself and her son.
9athers hearts are being turned to the fatherless in ministry. $s a
spiritual father, 5li6ah, was able to bring a miracle of supply to a
5
previously !fatherless family?# He brought life back to a dead son. 5ven
so, spiritual fathers are able to bring life back to spiritually dead sons.

He then began to prophesy the 7ord of the Hord that brought
supernatural deliverance. The glory released in worship will bring
a tangible anointing to function in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Elijah B 5li6ah learned to perceive the anointing by being a servant
to 5li6ah. He had an unstoppable desire for a double portion of the
anointing. 7hen 5li6ahs mantle 1a symbol of the anointing2 fell on

There are many ways the anointing is manifest in our bodies. The more
we move and minister in the anointing the easier it is to discern. %f we do
not feel the anointing within, we can minister by faith on Gods 7ord,

anointing and grace we begin to pray a prophetic prayer by revelation or

The anointing to minister is an anointing that comes upon a believer to
function in a certain ministry gifting. There are the five8fold ministry
gifts to disciple and e&uip the saints and there are other ministry gifts
such as the ministry of helps, governments, administration, giving, mercy
and eEhortation. $n anointing will come upon a believer who is called to
minister or function in any of these ministry gifts. 7ith that anointing
comes a supernatural enabling to function in the realm of the calling of
God upon our lives.
This anointing is different than the anointing that is within every believer.
%t is an anointing to function supernaturally in a specific area of ministry.
