This is a plate froma Comstock plan and pattern book from
the early 1880s. It is a great example of ornate Victorian
millwork and the type of elaboration typical of the period.
Both examples are chock full of detail fromthe 3 part wainscot caps to different type of panel treatments
to the reeded feature in the base. Note too how are out fromthe walls these will sit. This proud element
makes tying into door and window casings more challenging. Either the casing has to come out far enough
for the cap and base to die into, or the wainscot cap returns to the wall with mixed results.

Breaking out the moldings in the wainscot-

ing allows us to see some interesting
trends which are common in Victorian
millwork. Victorian millwork is identifiable
by the elaborate use of panel molds in
doors and wainscoting. In this example
they are used on the panels and tile. These
panel molds come in two varieties; the
flush panel mold (sitting below the surface
of the stile and rail) as in detail A. And
raised panel molds as in the top of B.
Raised panel molds lip over the edge of the
stile and rails. In Victorian millwork it is
common to see both, and the use of these
panel molds die out after the early 1900s.
