A CUTTING AFFRAY NEAR MANCHESTER
Jack McDaniel, of Manchester, Stabbed Jeff Cochran, a Young Farmer, in Crawford's Store- Deputy Sheriff Millirons arrested Former on Charge of Assault With Intent to Murder.
A row and cutting affray occurred yesterday about 10:30 o'clock, at Crawford's store, on the corner of the road running parallel with the Central rail road, from Manchester Mills
and Pio Nono Avenue, Vineville.

Jack McDaniel, a young man about 22 years of age, who lives at Manchester - his mother working in the mill - accompanied by a young man named Robert Odom, was at
Crawford's store. There were a number of other parties in the store at the time. Jeff Cochran, a young farmer, who lives near the Columbus road, entered the store, and went to the
stove in the rear, about which McDaniel and others were standing. Some words passed between Cochran and McDaniel, when the latter called Cochran a liar. He responded by
hitting McDaniel with a billet of wood. The latter attacked Cochran with a sling shot, hitting him three times, when Robert Odom handed him a knife and said:
"Go in and finish your job."
McDaniel seized the knife sprang on Cochran like a fury, and slashed him in the face, cutting a gash in the nose - cut him in the breast, on the wrist and gave him a vicious cut back
of the left ear, and pulled away. It is stated that Cochran was unarmed.
Mrs. Crawford was in charge of the store, her husband being absent. Becoming alarmed, she phoned to Sheriff Westcott that she was in need of protection, and gave him an
account of what had transpired. Before the officers could reach the scene; however, McDaniel left the store, in company of W.L. Cato, and went to the home of the latter on
Factory Row, Manchester. Cochran, accompanied by Robert Odom, also went down to Factory Row in Manchester, where his mother lives.
While Cochran was standing in front of the Cato cottage talking to young Cato, McDaniel, his brother and Odom opened the door of the house where McDaniel's mother lives, and
the latter fired three pistol shots at Cochran while the latter was looking in another direction. The wounded man had secured a pistol, and as the bullets from McDaniel's weapon
whistled about him, he turned and opened fire. McDaniel and his party at this juncture rushed into the house and closed the door. None of the shots took effect.
Deputy Sheriff Millirons went out to Manchester and arrested McDaniel on a warrant charging him with assault with intent to murder, brought him to the city, and lodged him in
Bibb County jail.
W.L. Cato, who was with Cochran and with Cochran and witnessed the affray, said the latter had been drinking, but was not intoxicated. He said Cochran did not have even a
penknife to defend himself with when the attack was made upon; and that Odom gave McDaniel the knife with which he cut Cochran. This statement was corroborated by others
present.
Cochran came into Crawford's store just as the representative of the Telegraph was about to leave. In reply to a request to tell how the affray started, he said:
"I came into the store and feeling chilly, I went up to the stove and asked a lot of men standing about it to give me a chance. The man who cut me was standing there, and in reply
to something I said he called me a liar. I picked up a billet of wood hit him. He hit me with a billy or sling shot, and then jumped on me and commenced to cut me. If he hadn't
been pulled off, I think he would have killed me. He cut me in five places, but the only cuts that bother me are the one behind my ear, which they say, is dangerous, and the gash in
my back."
Cochran's coat was slashed with a rent in the breast, and in the back where the knife had been driven by his assailant. Cochran had a narrow escape.
~Macon Telegraph. 6 December 1902.
Prosecutor Occupies Cell.
Macon, Ga., December 10. - (Special.)- Jack McDaniel, the young man who used his knife and subsequently his gun on Jack [sic] Cochran in the Manchester district was arraigned
in the city court this morning before Judge Nottingham. The evidence introduced established extenuating circumstances and McDaniel was given a verdict of acquittal.
Cochran, who was been pushing the case against McDaniel, is now in trouble himself. While McDaniel's trial was going on an officer was present with a warrant for Cochran in
which forgery is alleged. The offense is said to have been committed in Forsyth, where Cochran is charged with having secured a pair of trousers. Cochran is now occupying the
cell in the Bibb county jail out of which McDaniel came when taken from jail for trial.
~The Atlanta Constitution. 11 December 1902.
By 1904 he was a foreman at Manchester Manufacturing Co.
Not longer afterwards his family along with his widowed mother moved to La Grange where was a supervisor in the spinning room.

Elizabeth Lousina Whittington McDaniel
She was the daughter of Winder Hillman Whittington (1814-1881) and Nancy Jones (1820-9 October 1846). She was born in Montgomery, Alabama. parents moved to Crawford
County, Georgia not long after she was born.

She married Michael Merritt on 23 August 1858. He died at the Battle of Olustee during the Civil War. They had at least one daughter.

She remarried after the war to Henry Anderson McDaniel. By 1885, she was widowed and living in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. She moved with the family of her eldest son
Charles Henry McDaniel to Lagrange, Georgia around 1905.
