MineSight

120-Series Programs
The 120-series is used to generate and manipulate graphical
information. This graphical information consists of a set of
elements, such as a border, points, symbols and text. Each plot
command specifies an element and parameters for coordinate
location, size, etc. Plot commands for each map segment (e.g.,
drillhole locations, coordinate grids, etc.) are stored as
independent files that can be overlaid to produce a final map.
There are two stages of generating a plot in MineSight

. First,
generate a file of plot commands with one of the MineSight

section, plan or contour routines (i.e., M216V1, M606V1,

M607V1, etc.), then run M122V1 to generate the plot on a
graphics device. When you run M122V1, you generally add
other plot information, such as titles, borders and coordinates.

M122V1 GENERAL PURPOSE GRAPHICS PROGRAM
REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS
M122V1 is an all-purpose plot program that can output displays
to a variety of graphical devices. Standard interfaces are provided
for CalComp plotters and Tektronics graphics screens. M122V1
can also be linked with any software that supports standard
CalComp subroutine calls.
This program is used to produce a variety of plots based on
input plot commands that are generated either by programs or
entered directly into the run file. The plot commands are
described later in this section. Because of the flexibility of
M122V1, plots can be customized and enhanced with features
such as borders, titles, legends, etc. Standard map sheets with
all relevant information for a project can be set up once and
used as required.
A run file for M122V1 must contain at least a MAP command
which gives the minimum and maximum X and Y. The minimum
values essentially define the origin of the plot. YMAX -YMIN
defines the length of a banner line that is drawn first on the plot.
This banner line will contain descriptive information from the
project identification line in the run file.
Plot data is not clipped within the MAP boundaries. You can
plot outside the limits specified by XMIN, XMAX, YMIN and
YMAX, although this is not normally done.
Data for M122V1 can be specified either in plotter units (inches
or centimeters) or in project units (usually feet or meters). Plotter
units will not be scaled by the scales specified on the MAP line,
whereas project units will be. The type of coordinate can be
specified on many of the plot commands by specifying code=0
for plotter units or code=1 for project units.
One important feature in MineSight

is the ability to layer plotted

information. Layering involves overlaying different graphical
information in a manner that is analogous to making map
overlays by a draftsman. In this way, coordinate grids, property
boundaries, seam outcrops, and surface features can be created
separately and brought together on a single map.

Page 122-2 Revised: 5-June-01
The steps to produce a plot within MineSight

are:
1. Define the display area and parameters.
2. Run one of the preplot routines such as M216V1, M506V1,
M606V1, that will:
Select data to be displayed
Project/convert to 2-D form
Output commands
3. Decide on the extra information to be added to plot (bor-
ders, titles, coordinates) and code this information into a
plot run file.
4. Run M122V1 to process all plot data and generate a plotted
result.
General purpose plotting features of M122V1
1. Special annotations of almost any type can be coded and
added to plots.
2. Special annotations may be moved (relocated) on a plot to
remove conflicts or overplotting.
3. User specified title boxes can be generated in runs inde-
pendently from plot runs and stored in small files, then added
to any desired plot.
4. Different features of a plot can be created by two or more
independent runs and/or manually coded then combined into
the desired plot.
5. Different plots may be combined on a single plot sheet us-
ing M122 (i.e., stack several cross sections across the height
of a sheet for a composite map).
6. Files containing plot commands can be named in the M122
run file using the USERF function. This makes it easier to
combine various independent portions of the plot.
Basic parameters that control plotting in M122V1
The plot area of a display corresponds to the region that has
eastings (X) between XMIN and XMAX and northings (Y)
between YMIN and YMAX. For a plotter that functions in
inches, the map scales in each direction are specified in units/
inch by XSCALE and YSCALE. The size of the plot map will
be (XMAX-XMIN) / XSCALE inches in the X direction and
(YMAX-YMIN) / YSCALE in the Y direction. For cross-
sections, the Y-axis would be elevation. For a plotter that is set
up as metric, the map scales in each direction are specified in
units/cm by XSCALE and YSCALE. The size of the plot in X
and Y will be (XMAX-XMIN) / XSCALE cm and (YMAX-
YMIN) / YSCALE cm.
If you wish to plot metric plots on a plotter set up for inches,
specify the scale as (metric scale * 0.0254). The following table
gives the conversion for some common metric scales.
Desired Scale M122V1 XSCALE

M122V1 Variations
There are several variations of M122V1 on your MEDEXE and
MEDUTIL directories. All these variations run from a standard
M122V1 run file, including using MEDS-122V1 on the Names
Line.
Using M122V1 with Plotters
Each of these programs interfaces with a particular plotter.
During MineSight

installation, after you specify your plotter

type, the related program is copied to M122V1.
If you have more than one plotter, specify your primary one
during installation. Additional plotters can be used by entering
their specific program name (e.g., M122HP).
M122CC - Interfaces with CalComp plotters using 906
controllers.
M122HI - Interfaces with Houston Instrument plotters.
M122HP - Interfaces with Hewlett Packard plotters.
M122H2 - Interfaces with Hewlett Packard plotters using the
HPGL2 language.
M122TN - Interfaces with CalComp plotters using 907
controllers.
M122ZT - Interfaces with a Bruenig Zeta plotter.
Other uses of M122V1
Each of these programs is run by entering M122xx, where xx
are the last two letters of the program name (e.g., M122MF).
M122AC - A conversion program used to transfer data from
MineSight

M122V1 format to AutoCAD DXF format. The data

is transferred in terms of plotter inches rather than user units.
Thus, the actual coordinates are lost. To rescale the data back
into actual units, set the Snap aspect to 1.0 for X and 1.7 for Y.
Scale a window from the lower left to the upper right of the
plot. Make the base point the lower left corner. The scale is
what scale your plot was in. Zoom all if needed to present all of
the data. Change the Snap aspect to 100 for both X and Y. Move
a window from the lower left to the upper right of your data.
The base point is 0,0 and the second point is the minimum X
and Y of your original plot.
M122LP - (DOS only) A version of M122V1 that interfaces
with laser printers and Epson-compatible printers. The plot is
automatically scaled to fit on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper.
M122LS - (DOS only) A version of M122V1 that interfaces
with laser printers and Epson-compatible printers. The plot is
automatically scaled to fit on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper. This
program is identical to M122LP except that it does not use the
METAF command. This version will run much faster than
M122LP for standard plots.

Page 122-4 Revised: 5-June-01
M122MF - This program creates metafiles from USERF plot
commands. These metafiles can then be used as overlays in the
MineSight

Graphical Interface (MGI) programs. An index file,

PROJMETA.NDX, is created (if none exists) or updated to
include the new metafile. The program can also be used as a
screen previewer. Settings for this program include:
IOP31 = screen preview / create metafile
PAR 30 = metafile elevation or section
FMT1 = group id of metafile
For more information, see the discussion of metafiles in the
M126MF documentation.
NOTE: This program plots text using a proportional font,
while versions H2, TN, CC, HP and ZT use a fixed font.
Text sizes may differ slightly between MF and the other
programs.
COLOR.TAB
For M122MF there is a set of 15 default pen colors:
1 = Black 9 = Light Cyan
2 = Green 10 = Light Green
3 = Blue 11 = Light Red
4 = Red 12 = Light Blue
5 = Magenta 13 = Light Magenta
6 = Brown 14 = Light Yellow
7 = Cyan 15 = Dark Grey
8 = Light Grey
You can change the default colors by specifying the red-green-
blue(RGB) components for any pen in a special file called
color.tab. A color.tab file in your local directory will override
any of the default pen settings. The RGB components are
numbers between 0 and 1 that set the amount of red, green, and
blue in each pen definition. For example, to set pen number 8 to
red, add the following line to your color.tab file:
8 1. 0. 0.
| | | |
Pen Red Green Blue
number
To set pen 11 to periwinkle blue, add the line:
11 .68 .75 1.0
256 pen colors are available in color.tab. They can be changed
in M122MF. Changing them in M122MF creates a local cus-
tom copy of the file color.tab.
M122PU - (DOS only) A deferred screen plot version that allows
plots to Pop Up; these plots can be used for a slide show.
M122TK - (DOS only) A version of M122V1 used to preview
plots on the PC screen. A zoom command is available to assist
in checking details. Enter Z after the plot is finished. Next use
the arrow keys to locate one corner of the area you wish to view
and press ENTER. Follow the same procedure for the diagonally
opposite corner. To exit the zoom, press any key. If you press
ESC, the plot will return to its original size.

M122V1 PLOT COMMANDS
The plot commands described below follow a general format. The Summary Table at the end of this section summarizes the command
format and required parameters for quick reference. Note that all commands are in free-format. However, the order must be maintained
for each command. Also note that when height and size are required for a command, if the height and size are greater than 1.0 in
magnitude, M122 assumes project units are intended. When project units are used, height and size are converted as:
height in plotter units =height in project units / XSCALE and
size in plotter units =size in project units / XSCALE
If height or size is entered as 0.0 (on ARROW, CNTLB, LABEL, LEGND, NUMBR and SYMBL), it will be assigned the value of
PAR31 from the run file.
Code indicates whether the parameters are in plotter units (code=0) or project units (code=1).
ARAY1 code X1 Y1 NP
The ARAY1 command specifies one point (X1,Y1) in a string of points to be connected by a line. NP is the number of the current
point in this string of points. This command is used in conjunction with the DASHL, SHADE and FLINE command.
ARAY2 code X1 Y1 NP
This is a second array of points that functions the same as ARAY1.
MineSight

M122V1 - GENERAL PURPOSE GRAPHICS PROGRAM Proprietary Software: Mintec, inc.

Page 122-8 Revised: 23-Oct-06
ARROW code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 type size
The ARROW command plots a line from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2. An arrowhead can be plotted at both X1,Y1 and X2,Y2. Type is a two
digit code (ij) where:
i = 0 No line drawn from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2; arrowhead drawn at X2,Y2
= 1 Line drawn from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2; arrowhead drawn at X2,Y2
= 2 Line drawn from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2; arrowhead drawn at X2,Y2 and X1,Y1
j = Indicates what type of arrow is to be plotted
Examples
If code <0, then X1,Y1 is ignored and the current pen position is used instead. Size is the size of the arrowhead in either plotter units
or project units.
BORDR code X1 X2 Y1 Y2 ang fil
The BORDR command plots a rectangular border (or box) with the lower left corner at X1,Y1, and upper right corner at X2, Y2. The
border may be rotated counterclockwise around X1,Y1 if ang>0 or clockwise around X1,Y1 if ang<0. The ang default is 0.0. The
border may be filled using the current pen if fil is 1.0. The default is 0.0 which simply plots the border. A filled border can be
shaded using percent shading if fil >1.
CIRCL code X1 Y1 ang2 rad1 ang1 rad2
The CIRCL command plots a circle or an arc starting at location X1,Y1. The starting radius of the arc is rad1 and the arc moves from
ang1 (the angle at the beginning of the arc) to ang2 (the angle at the end of the arc). Ang1 and ang2 are measured in a counterclockwise
direction. Rad2 is the ending radius of the arc.
CNTLB code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 ht #char pen#/ string
The CNTLB command plots a string of characters between points X1,Y1 and X2,Y2. The string will be centered if the length
between the two points is greater than the length required by the label (string). The entire string of characters will start at X1,Y1 and
plot beyond X2, Y2, if the string exceeds the length between the points. The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or
plotter units. The #char is the number of characters in the string, pen#is optional, but if used, the pen specified will be used only for
this command. A quotation mark or a slash (/) is the delimiter for the character string. A quotation mark will recognize leading
blanks in the character string while a slash will not.
CONTF filename
The CONTF command accesses and plots the commands from an M607V1 contour plot file.

Revised: 23-Oct-06 Page 122-9
CONTL code csize cfreq linct ndigt
Use in conjunction with the CONTF command. It must precede CONTF. The CONTL command labels contours and the specifications
are:
csize = annotation size (in plotter units) for contour labeling
cfreq = annotation frequency (plotter units between labeling)
linct = increment between labeled lines (1=label each)
ndigt = number of digits after the decimal point for the contour labeling:
-1=no digits & no decimal point
0 =no digits after but include the decimal point
n =#of digits to the right of the decimal point
CONTW code wxmin wxmax wymin wymax
Use in conjunction with the CONTF command. It must precede CONTF. The CONTW command creates a contour plot window.
wxmin = Minimum X coordinate of window
wymin = Minimum Y coordinate of window
wxmax = Maximum X coordinate of window
wymax = Maximum Y coordinate of window
COORD code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 delta ht ang ndec valu dval
The COORD command is used for plotting a series of coordinates on X or Y. The coordinates begin at X1,Y1 and end at X2,Y2 with
an increment of delta. The height, angle, and significant digits to the right of the decimal are given by ht, ang, and ndec, respectively.
The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or plotter units. The beginning coordinate value is given by valu and the
increment by dval. Ang is measured counterclockwise from horizontal.

Page 122-10 Revised: 23-Oct-06
DASHL code size #pattern
The DASHL command is used to plot a dashed line based upon points stored with an ARAY1 or ARAY2 command. If code=0 or 1,
DASHL uses ARAY1 data. If code=2, DASHL uses ARAY2 data.
Sixteen dash patterns (#pattern) are predefined (-7 to +8). You can also define your own patterns. Size is the length of a single dash
element in plotter units. A standard dash of one solid element followed by a blank element is produced when #pattern=0.
Predefined dash patterns are shown below:
MineSight

Revised: 23-Oct-06 Page 122-11
User defined dash patterns
You can define your own patterns based on key characters. A maximum of 20 patterns (8 standard positive and 12 user patterns) may
be specified for a given run. You define a pattern at the start of the run file with the command
DASHL 0 -1.0 9 (pattern) / 1st user pattern
DASHL 0 -1.0 10 (pattern) / 2nd user pattern
A size of -1.0 indicates the pattern is not to be plotted. (Pattern) is defined from the following symbols:
Character Meaning
- plot a solid element
& plot a blank element
+ plot a perpendicular bar at current position
* plot an X across line at current position
> plot an >across line at current position
< plot an <across line at current position
@ plot a circle with radius=0.5 * size
. plot a centered bullet
For example:
std pattern #1 =(&)
4 Solid, bullet =(.)
DATAF filename
The DATAF command accesses and plots the commands from a binary file (filename). The plotting commands in the file must be a
subset of plot functions described in this section. If the commands are from an ASCII file, use the USERF command instead.
DHCOL code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 thik size nchar / dhid
The DHCOL command plots a drillhole (usually in section) that begins at X1,Y1 and ends at X2,Y2. The DH-IDENT (dhid) has
nchar characters and the character height is size. The default for size is ansize. If size<0, the DH-IDENT isnt plotted and if size>0,
the DH-IDENT is plotted. If IOP3=0 in the run file, then the DH-IDENT is plotted at the top of the drillhole. If IOP3=1, it is plotted
at the end of the hole. Thik is the thickness of the drillhole intervals to be plotted with DHINT (see below). Thik default is 0.1.
DHCUT code X1 Y1 thick
The DHCUT command plots a line perpendicular to a drillhole (thick is line length) at a cross-section intersection. Thick default =
5 * ansize.
DHINT code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 #char pen#box shading value
DHINT is used to plot values for each drillhole interval. The beginning of the interval is at X1,Y1 and the end of the interval is at X2,Y2.
#char is the number of characters in value. Pen#is the pen to be used for plotting. Value is the item to be plotted as a label for the
interval. If there is not enough vertical space to plot the label, it will not be plotted. Label size is controlled by size in the DHCOL
command.

DHLFT code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 #char pen#box shading value
The DHLFT command functions the same as DHINT, except the label is put on the left side of the drillhole trace, not the right side.
DIMEN code X Y dim ang
The DIMEN command plots an annotated drafting dimension line. X and Y specify the start of the dimension line and dim is the
actual dimension to be plotted. Ang is the angle of the dimension line from the horizontal (measured counterclockwise). This
function will plot two arrowheads separated by two vertical bars, dim units apart.
ELIPS code X1 Y1 RX RY angle thf tho
The ELIPS command plots an ellipse or an elliptical arc starting at location X1,Y1 on the ellipse. The radii are RX and RY in the X
and Y directions, respectively. Angle is an optional rotation from the horizontal (measured counterclockwise). Thf and tho, respectively,
are the angles at the starting and ending points on the ellipse with respect to angle.

FLINE code
The FLINE command is used to connect the series of points given by ARAY1 with a smooth solid line if code =0 or 1. The series of
points given by ARAY2 is connected if code =2.
GRID code X1 X2 Y1 Y2 xinc yinc xoff yoff
The GRID command plots a regular, linear grid with the lower left corner at X1,Y1. The spacing between N-S grid lines is xinc while
the spacing between E-W grid lines is yinc. If yinc is not specified, it defaults to xinc for a square grid. Xoff is offset from X1 for
plotting grid. Yoff is offset from Y1 for plotting grid. Xoff and yoff default to zeros if not input. If xoff, yoff are input, yinc must be
defined (e.g., cannot be left blank.)
IDENT comments
The IDENT command is used to enter any comments, remarks or identifying lines. The comments do not affect the plot, but are used
to document the plot file.
LABEL code X Y ang ht #char pen#/ string
The LABEL command plots a string of characters beginning at the location X,Y and proceeding at the angle (ang) from the horizontal
(measured counterclockwise) for a total plot length of (ht * #char). The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or
plotter units. If #char=0, the date will be plotted. If #char=-1, both the date and time will be plotted. The number of characters is limited
to 74. Pen#is optional. If used, the pen specified will be used only for this plot command. The starting location is the lower left hand
corner of the first character in the string. A slash (/) or quote mark is optionally used to delimit the character string. A quote mark will
recognize leading blanks in the character string while a slash will not.
LEGND code X Y ang len delta size ndec
The LEGND command plots a graphic map scale with alternating top and bottom increments filled in. The map scale begins at X,Y
and proceeds parallel to either the X-axis (ang =0) or the Y-axis (ang =90). The total length of the scale (len) may be entered in either
plotter units (code =0) or project coordinates (code =1). The length and labeling of the scale increments are controlled by delta:
Scale increment =delta / XSCALE (for a map scale in the X-direction) Scale increment =delta / YSCALE (for
a map in the Y-direction)
For example, if the map scale is 1" =50 and delta =50, each increment will be 1" long and labeled above the map scale starting with a 0,
then 50, 100, etc. The character height for these labels (size) may be entered in either project or plotter units. Ndec is the number of
decimal places and defaults to -1 (no decimal point).
LINE code X1 Y1 X2 Y2 size
The LINE command plots a solid or dashed line between points X1,Y1 and X2,Y2. If size is less than 0.05, a solid line will be plotted.
A dashed line will be plotted if size is greater than or equal to 0.05. The size of the dash pattern will be in plotter units if size is greater
than 1.0 and will be in project units if size is less than or equal to 1.0.
METAF filename
METAF accesses and plots the commands from a metafile.
MOVE2
This command moves data stored in ARAY2 to ARAY1.

Page 122-14 Revised: 23-Oct-06
NUMBR code X Y ang ht value ndec
The NUMBR command plots a real number (value) at the specified map location (X,Y), at the given angle (ang) from the horizontal
(measured counterclockwise). The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or plotter units. The numeric value is plotted
with the number of decimal places specified by (ndec). Ndec=0 will plot the decimal point. Ndec =-1 will not plot it.
NUORG code xcon ycon
The NUORG command will set a new origin for a plot at the location xcon, ycon.
PEN# n
The PEN#command selects which plotter pen is to be used. N is the pen to be selected (1,2...). Once selected it will be used for all
commands following until specified otherwise.
PLYFL code pen edg pct raster_type
The PLYFL command shades a polygon with pen as color. The polygon can also be outlined if edg =1.0 (the current pen will be
used as the outline). The default for edg is 0.0, (no outline). To select a pen to shade the polygon using a Calcomp plotter simply refer
to your color chart and use the color number associated with the color of your choice. For Hewlett Packard plotters refer to the 120
-Technical Section on setting up a palette, then use the pen number of the palette selection you have set up. The code parameter of
PLYFL should be set to 1 or 2 based on which ARAY you are using. PLYFL with code 1 should be used with ARAY1 commands; use
code 2 to fill a polygon defined by ARAY2 commands.
For Hewlett Packard plotters, you can specify a shading level for the fill command by setting pct to a value from 1-100. One side-effect
of this is that the setting will stay in effect until it is reset. This will affect the BORDR command as well as PLYFL. To reset the shading
level, use PLYFL with a code of 0. For example, PLYFL 0 0 0 50 will reset the shading level to 50%. Using 100 for pct will reset the
shading level to solid fill.
To solid fill, set pct=100 and raster_type =0. A raster_type >0 will override pct.
POINT code X Y ipen pen#dash
The POINT command moves the pen from its current location to a new point at (X,Y) with the pen down (ipen =2) or with the pen up
(ipen =3). Pen#is optional. If used, the pen#specified will also control any plot commands. If dash is specified, a dashed line will be
plotted that will connect points. Dash is the length of the dash pattern.
POLYG code X Y ang slen #side
The POLYG command plots a polygon of equal length sides (slen) beginning at (X,Y). The starting point (X,Y) is the lower left vertex
of the polygon. Slen must be specified in plotter units. Ang is the angle of the base of the polygon from horizontal (measured
counterclockwise). The number of sides for the polygon is specified by #side. If side is negative, a star is drawn with sides points.

Revised: 23-Oct-06 Page 122-15
RESET code X1 Y1 XMIN XMAX YMIN YMAX
The RESET command can be used to reset the plot origin and the map parameters. If X1 +Y1 equals 0.0, the plot origin will be
moved to an X-coordinate of XMAX +4 plotter units and a Y-coordinate of YMIN. If X1 +Y1 are greater than 0.0, the plot origin
will be shifted by X1,Y1. This command will also reset any SHIFT or NUORG commands. If XMIN, XMAX, YMIN, or YMAX are
0.0, XMIN, XMAX, YMIN, YMAX will not be reset.
SHADE code dist1 ang1 dist2 ang2 pen#outline
The SHADE command is used to shade, or cross-hatch, the area defined by the closed, clockwise boundary created from the ARAY1
or ARAY2 commands. Two sets of cross-hatching can be used. The first set has a spacing of dist1 at angle ang1, and the second sets
spacing is dist2 at angle ang2. If code =1, ARAY1 is used. If code =2, ARAY2 is used. If dist<1.0, it is assumed to be in plotter units.
Ang must be between +90 and -90 degrees. Pen#defaults to the current pen#. If outline =1, the shaded area will be outlined.
SHIFT code xadd yadd
This command is used to shift the coordinates of any following plot commands by a constant (xadd, yadd). If code =0, only plot
commands in plotter units will be shifted. If code =1, only plot commands in project units will be shifted. Plot commands can be
shifted with negative or positive values for xadd, yadd. When plotting a contour map produced from M607V1, you normally have
to shift the plot 0.5 blocks in the X,Y direction. You can shift with project units only if you specify a CONTW command. You would
normally shift with plotter units.
SPECS xmin xmax xscale ymin ymax yscale
The SPECS command is used in the same manner as the MAP line in the run file. It specifies the minimum, maximum and scale
used. Its primary use is to overlay a map that has been generated with a different scale.
SYMBL code X Y ang ht nsym pen#
The SYMBL command is used to plot a single symbol at location X,Y with the angle (ang) from the horizontal (measured
counterclockwise). The height of the symbol may be entered in either project units (if ht>1.0) or plotter units (if ht<1.0). The symbol
(nsym) to be plotted can be obtained from the symbol charts that follow. If a symbol chart for your plotter is not included, use the
sample file included in the Sample File Section to plot your own chart. Pen#is optional. If specified, it is only used for this plot
command.

M126MF METAFILE VIEWING PROGRAM
(EMPC and Unix workstation versions only)
PROGRAM SUMMARY
M126MF is used to interactively view and edit metafiles
and to create USERF files of the displayed information.
I t is one of the Mi ne Si ght Gr aphical Interface
(MGI) programs.
PROGRAM FLOW DIAGRAM
RUN FI LE:
I NPUT: CALCS:

REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS
Metafiles
Metafiles are files of graphic images that can be viewed
and used as overlays with MGI pr ograms. They can be
created from Mi neSi ght USERF files with M122MF
or with the Add Objects function in this and other MGI
programs. Only metafiles created through the Add Ob-
jects icon can be edited. The standard extension of these
files is HMF, although any extension is allowed.
Metafile Groups
Metafiles can be organized into groups for easier file
management. For example, one group might contain all
overlays relative to pit design; another, all those for anno-
tating plots. The default gr oup is COMMON.
PROJMETA.NDX
The index file, PROJMETA.NDX, is used to manage all
the metafiles in use in a particular project. For each
metafile, this index contains the metafile name, its eleva-
tion or section, its group and a one line description.
Pr ograms M122MF, M126MF and M650ED will all create
this index the first time a metafile function is run. There-
after, each metafile function used will update the index
file. The index file can also be cr eated and edited with
your systems text editor. A sample file is included at the
end of this documentation.
This documentation includes dir ections for getting the
program started. Detailed information on individual fea-
tures can be found in the on-line help file.
An overview of the common features of all Mi ne Si ght
Graphical Interface programs can be found in the

Editing Metafiles
Metafiles that were initially created with the Add Objects
icon can be edited with the Add Objects icon in any MGI
program, not just M126MF. Metafiles which were cre-
ated through other Medsystem pr ograms, such as plot
files, cannot be edited through the Add Objects icon and
should be revised using the program which created them.
Although you are not able to edit a plot metafile, you may
create an overlay while the plot metafile is visible.
For detailed information about metafile editing,
refer to the on-line help file available under ? icon on
the main screen. Select the Help Topics Icons then
Add Objects Icon, then look for t he section titled

REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS
M140V1 will output either a plot commands file or survey file.
Multiple input files can be used and input data can be used
selectively. Output plot commands use the M122V1 commands
ARAY1, DASHL, SYMBL and LABEL.
The linetypes, symbols and colors used to display survey data
are defined in the survey code parameters file. Survey points
may be labeled by using the appropriate ITM command.
Labeling may be by point number or by elevation. Relative
elevations may be plotted by specifying a constant to subtract
from the elevation of each point. The constant to subtract is
specified as a positive number. Data can be interpolated between
input survey points to provide an output file with denser point
spacing. The interpolation is linear at a regular specified interval.
The higher density of point spacing may be needed to produce
more control when modeling a surface.
Program M122V1 must be used to display plot command output.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION - PLOTTERS
Creating a pen palette for the HP650C Plotter
M122H2 outputs plot commands with up to sixteen (16)
logical pen numbers. The different pens are used to
distinguish cutoff values, geologic pr oper ties, structural
types, etc. It is important to remember that the pen
numbers are logical pens and do not r epresent any spe-
cific color or line thickness. It is recommended that some
thought be given to the representation of these items and
that the same standard be used throughout the life of the
project.
Using the HP650C ink jet plotter, you can define a logical
pen to have a specific color and thickness. For MED-
SYSTEM the setup must be done at the plotter. The
plotter has a factor y default setting which cannot be
changed and two (2) changeable settings, Palette A and
Palette B. Sixteen pens can be defined using different
widths and any combination of the plotters 256 colors.
The default line thickness is 0.35mm. The minimum
thickness is one pixel (0.13mm), and some color s ar e a
dot pattern at this thickness. We recommend that Pen
1-8 be pr imary or dark colors, and Pens 9-16 be light
colors, to be used for shading polygons and blocks.
1. To VERIFY the colors available, plot out the Palette
demo plot.
a. On the plotter panel press the Enter button, then
the down arrow button until
DEMO PLOTS appears in the display.
b. Press the Enter button until PALETTE appear s in
the window, then press the Enter button.
2. DEFINE the palette (A or B).
From the Status screen, press Enter. Press the up
ar row twice to scroll to Pen Settings then press Enter.
Scroll to Define Palette and press Enter, when A or
B displays press Enter . You will be setting up palette
A or B.
Scroll to the PEN NUMBER you wish to define, and
press Enter, the cur rent setting for this pen width will
be displayed. Scroll to the new setting and press
Enter.
Scroll to COLOR you wish to define, and press En-
ter, scroll to the color number you want and press
Enter. ( The color number may be obtained from the
demo plot.)
3. LOAD the Palette.
From the Status screen, press Enter. Press the up
arrow twice to scroll to Pen Settings then press Enter.
Scroll to the desired pallette (A, B, or Factory) , and
press Enter. The displayed palette is now loaded.
Using M122LP
In order to use M122LP you need to have it in your
MEDEXE dir ectory. You also need to create a file that
corresponds to the type of printer you have. This file will
need to be located in the dir ectory where you wish to plot
from. The file name is PRINTER.DRV. You create this
file by going to your MEDUTIL directory and running
the DRIVERS.EXE program.
DRIVERS.EXE creates the PRINTER.DRV by offering
you several printer manufacturer names and their differ -
ent printer models. You simply choose Printers, then the
manufactuers name, then the model type and the resolu-
tion.
The only tricky part is determining the resolution to use
( especially for HP LaserJets). The resolution of the
printer is determined by the amount of on-board memory
that the printer has. I would suggest that you pick 300 dpi
r esolution first and try a test plot. If the plot comes out
okay, then thats all there is to it. If the plot is only
partially plotted, or if part of it is shifted, you need to
create a PRINTER.DRV with the next lowest resolution.
Continue until the plot is perfect.
You may need to find the GEOCOMP diskette that came
