3. GENERAL 3.1 All piping components shall conform to this Guide and ASME B31.3, in that order of precedence.

3.2 More stringent local codes or regulations may supersede the aforementioned requirements and therefore be governing. 3.3 This Guide modifies and supplements the requirements of ASME B31.3 (hereinafter referred to as B31.3). 4. MATERIALS 4.1 General

4.1.1 The use of materials not listed in B31.3, and the derivation of their allowable stresses and required notch toughness, requires approval by Mobil. 4.1.2 Structural grade steels (pipe, plate, or sheet) are prohibited for pressure-containing parts.

4.1.3 The use of refurbished, surplus, or reused metallic materials and piping components requires Mobil approval. Reuse of nonmetallic materials is prohibited. 4.1.4 Ductile iron shall not be used for pressure-containing parts in flammable or toxic services.

4.1.5 Cast, malleable, and wrought iron may be used only in Category D fluid service at temperatures between 0C (32F) and 100C (212F). Ductile iron, good from 0C (32F) to 149C (300F), is preferred over these other materials. 4.1.6 Carbon steel shall not be used above 538C (1000F). It shall not be used above 454C (850F) without Mobil approval. 4.1.7 The low-chrome alloys (1/2 Cr to 9 Cr) shall not be used above 649C (1200F). They shall not be used above 593C (1100F) without Mobil approval. 4.1.8 Carbon-molybdenum steel shall not be used in hydrogen service. It shall not be used in other services without Mobil approval. 4.1.9 When austenitic stainless steel is to be fabricated by welding, the low carbon ("L" grade) material shall be used. However, in certain noncorrosive environments (e.g., boiler feedwater, lube oil systems), it may not be necessary to use "L" grade material. The user should check with the MTC Facilities Group.

4.1.10 Unreinforced Teflon shall not be used where it would be exposed to temperatures above 177C (350F). Reinforced Teflon shall not be used where it would be exposed to temperatures above 232C (450F). [Exception: When used as the filler for spiral-wound gaskets, unreinforced Teflon may be used to 232C (450F)]. Buna-N, EPDM, and Viton shall be limited to maximum temperatures of 82C (180F), 104C (220F), and 204C (400F), respectively. 4.1.11 Nonmetallic materials shall not be used abovegrade for pressure-containing piping components (other than gaskets, packing, and valve seats) handling flammable fluids. Nonmetallic materials may be considered for certain low-pressure, nontoxic services with Mobil approval. 4.1.12 Recommended materials for several nonhydrocarbon services are shown in EGS 1130, Table 1.

4.1.13 Materials for hydrogen and hydrogen-rich gas piping shall conform to API 941. The recommended safety factor is a minimum of 28C (50F) below each curve. 4.1.14 Copper, aluminum, and their alloys shall not be used for piping components in flammable fluid service, except that aluminum may be used in Classes 150, 300, and 600 for temperatures below !46C (!50F). 4.1.15 Lead, tin, and their alloys shall not be used in flammable fluid services. In addition, they shall not be used in other pressure piping without Mobil approval. 4.2 Identification

4.2.1 All pipe materials shall be color coded to provide expedient identification for storage and issue. Color coding shall be in accordance with EGE 16-B-5 or the color-coding system used by the local facility. 4.2.2 Steel valves shall be marked in accordance with ASME B16.34 and the applicable API valve standard (e.g., API 600, 602, etc.). 4.2.3 All fittings, flanges, and unions, and all nonmetallic valves shall be marked in accordance with MSS SP-25. 5. PIPING JOINTS 5.1 5.1.1 5.1.2 5.2 General All piping joints shall be fabricated and erected in accordance with EGE 16-B-40. All joint designs for nonmetallic piping require Mobil approval. Welded Joints

5.2.1 For welded piping in NPS 3 (NPS = nominal pipe size, inches) and larger, buttwelded construction shall be used. For NPS 2, buttwelded construction is preferred. However, for NPS 2 piping in Classes 150 and 300, socket welded construction is acceptable in accordance with Paragraph 5.2.2 of this Guide. 5.2.2 For NPS 11/2 and smaller welded construction, it is preferred that socket welding be used rather than buttwelding except: (a) (b) Where crevice corrosion is expected. Where fatigue failure could occur due to excessive vibration.

(c) In Classes 900 and higher, where fatigue failure could occur because of frequent temperature cycles [e.g., >260C (>500F) and >50 cycles/year]. 5.3 Flanges and Flanged Joints

5.3.1 NPS 24 and smaller steel flanges shall conform to ASME B16.5 for Classes 2500 and lower. NPS 26 and larger steel flanges shall conform to ASME B16.47, Series B, except Series A flanges shall be used when required to mate to equipment and valves supplied with Series A flanges. Flanges larger than those listed in ASME B16.47 shall be individually designed on a case-by-case basis, using the requirements of ASME Section VIII, Division 1. 5.3.2 Class 150 flanges shall not be used above 399C (750F). Also, Class 150 flanges shall not be used where frequent, severe temperature cycling [>260C (500F) and >50 cycles/year] is anticipated, such as in some coker units and similar services. Care shall be taken when bolting up Class 150 flanges using spiral wound gaskets in piping NPS 11/2 and smaller. Care is needed to adequately seat the gasket without damaging the small flanges. 5.3.3 Cast flanges and flanges made from plate material shall not be used. Cast, malleable, wrought, and ductile iron threaded flanges shall not be used. 5.3.4 Weld neck flanges are generally preferred for piping NPS 2 and above. Weld neck flanges shall be used for the following conditions: (a) (b) Where crevice corrosion is expected. Where fatigue failure could occur due to excessive vibration.

(c) In Class 900 and higher services, where fatigue failure could occur because of severe temperature cycling [>260C (>500F) and >50 cycles/year]. (d) 5.3.5 Severe cyclic conditions (as defined by B31.3).

Slip-on flanges (double welded) may be used in the following services: (a) Category D and hydrocarbon (normal fluid) services (as defined by B31.3) in Classes 150 and 300, at temperatures of 399C (750F) and lower. (b) Lube and seal oil piping (where significant savings may be realized by using carbon steel flanges with stainless steel piping). (c) Cement-lined piping, where slip-on flanges shall be welded on the outside only. The pipe and liner shall be made flush with the flange face.

5.3.6 5.3.7

Slip-on flanges shall not be used to make lap joint (lapped) flanges. Threaded flanges shall not be used, except in galvanized piping systems.

5.3.8 In applications requiring stainless steel and other expensive alloy piping, consideration may be given to the use of lap joint flanges. However, the use of carbon steel lap joint flanges is restricted to Class 150 services; higher pressure classes require the flanges to conform to the main pipe material. 5.3.9 Flange facing finish for raised-face flanges shall be 3 to 8 microns (125 to 320 micro-inches). For flat-face flanges, the finish shall be 3 to 12 microns (125 to 500 micro-inches).

Except as listed below, all flanges for Classes 1500 and lower shall have raised faces. All iron (cast, ductile, and malleable) and brass flanges shall be flat faced. When metallic flanges are bolted to nonmetallic flanges, both shall be flat faced.

5.3.11 Class 2500 flanges shall be ring joint or raised face. Where ring joint flanges are used, they shall be furnished with a flat-bottom groove and finished in accordance with ASME B16.5 or ASME B16.47. As an alternative, Grayloc-type connectors may also be considered. 5.3.12 Wherever flanges of different materials mate in seawater service, consideration shall be given to the need to provide electrical insulation to prevent galvanic corrosion. Similarly, the need for insulating flange sets shall be considered for buried metallic piping, especially where cathodic protection is provided. 5.4 Threaded Joints

5.4.1 Threaded joints with threads tapered in accordance with ASME B1.20.1 shall not be used where temperatures exceed 260C (500F) or pressures exceed 2760 kPa (400 psig) unless they are seal welded. 5.4.2 Except as stated below, threaded joints shall not be used. (a) Threaded joints may be used for NPS 2 and smaller bare steel piping in water, nitrogen, and air services. (b) Threaded valves and fittings may be used where NPS 11/2 and smaller joints must be disconnected. Examples are plugs for vents, drains, and cleanouts; connections to equipment and instruments; and orifice tap valves. The joint on the pressure side of such block valves should be socket welded, or threaded and seal welded, in accordance with EGE 16-B-40. It is preferred that these valves be furnished with one end socket welded and one end threaded. (c) Threaded joints, NPS 1 and smaller, may be used in steam service downstream of block valves to traps, etc., if the design pressure and temperature are less than 1035 kPa (150 psig) and 204C (400F), respectively. (d) Threaded and seal welded joints may be used at orifice flange taps.

(e) Threaded joints may be used for galvanized piping NPS 4 and smaller. (Exceptions: In firewater spray piping they are limited to NPS 2 and smaller, and in seawater service they are limited to NPS 3 and smaller). (f) Threaded joints may be used in NPS 11/2 and smaller hydrofluoric acid (HF) service.

(g) Threaded joints may be used in NPS 11/2 and smaller piping in caustic and amine service, where it is necessary to stress relieve welds. However, threaded joints in these applications shall not be subjected to cyclic loading. 5.5 5.5.1 Proprietary and Other Joints No proprietary or special joints shall be used without Mobil approval.

5.5.2 Proprietary joints such as Grayloc connectors may be considered as alternatives to ASME B16.5 flanges for Classes 1500 and higher.

5.5.3 Victaulic joints may be considered for use in firewater or other Category D piping systems, with Mobil approval. 5.5.4 Joints with flared, flareless, or compression bite-type tubing fittings shall not be used in severe cyclic conditions. 5.5.5 Tubing shall not be used in sizes larger than 25 mm (1 in.) OD. Only bite-type compression joints shall be used. The use of these joints is limited to 232C (450F) and 1035 kPa (150 psig) if made of brass; to 399C (750F) and 6.9 MPa (1000 psig) if made of carbon steel; and to 649C (1200F) and 20.7 MPa (3000 psig) if made of Type 304/304L or 316/316L stainless steel. Component parts shall not be interchanged between fittings of different manufacturers. 6. BOLTING AND GASKETS 6.1 General

Gaskets and bolting not conforming to standards and specifications listed in B31.3 shall not be used without Mobil approval. 6.2 Bolting

6.2.1 Except where stress corrosion cracking is a consideration, bolting shall be used as specified in Table 1. Heavy, semifinished hexagonal nuts shall be used and shall conform to ASTM A194. 6.2.2 In environments that cause embrittlement or stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of low-chrome alloy or carbon steel bolting, the bolting shall be as shown in Table 2. 6.2.3 Bolting for nonferrous flanges and for nonmetallic flanges having a metal temperature between !29C (!20F) and 399C (750F) shall be ASTM A193 Grade B7, provided galvanic corrosion is not an expected problem. 6.2.4 Galvanized (zinc-coated) bolts shall not be used in any service above 204C (400F). The use of cadmium-plated bolts is prohibited. 6.2.5 6.3 Headed bolts (rather than stud bolts) shall not be used without Mobil approval. Gaskets

6.3.1 For ASME flanges, spiral-wound and RTJ gaskets shall conform to ASME B16.20, while ring sheet gaskets shall conform to ASME B16.21. 6.3.2 For non-Category D services, full-face gaskets for flat-face flanges shall be made from 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) thick flexible graphite sheet material (see information in EGS 1130). For Category D services, suitable nonasbestos sheet material from approved manufacturers may be used. (NOTE: Many nonasbestos
sheet materials can be temperature dependent and/or service specific.)

6.3.3

With the exceptions noted in Paragraph 6.3.4, gaskets for raised-face flanges shall be as follows: (a) Class 150 [!198C (!325F) to 399C (750F)] 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) flexible graphite sheet gasket (see information in EGS 1130) or spiral-wound gasket with Types 304/304L and 316/316L stainless steel windings and flexible graphite filler material. Consideration may also be given to the use of "low stress" spiral wound gaskets in Class 150 services.

HIGH-strength bolt as classified by ASME B16.5, Table 1B. INTERMEDIATE-strength bolt as classified by ASME B16.5, Table 1B. LOW-strength bolt as classified by ASME B16.5, Table 1B. This grade bolt and other Class 1 grades of austenitic bolting made to A193 and A320 should only be used with sheet gaskets or self-energizing gaskets (for example, o-rings or other types of gaskets considered as self-sealing). Low strength bolts are limited to pressure classes 150 to 300. Consideration should be given to "controlled torquing" or "pre-loading" of bolts for specific design conditions. When hydraulic tensioning equipment is used, bolt lengths shall be increased at least one bolt diameter in order to add an extra nut for the tensioning equipment to "grab." When low alloy bolts (B7 to B16) are used with austenitic flanges, the bolts shall be tightened to not more than 50 percent of the specified minimum yield strength, since the flanges will expand more than the bolts in the hot condition. Consideration should also be given to the use of Belleville spring washers to offset any differential thermal expansion and subsequent bolt relaxation. Exercise caution when insulating flanged joints with a temperature of 399C (750F) or higher. Joints should be adequately torqued prior to installing the insulation. Additionally, use of B16 bolts should be considered, since they have a higher strength, compared to B7 or B8M bolts, at temperatures of 399C (750F) and higher. The insulation of flanges in hydrogen service with greater than 690 kPa (100 psia) hydrogen partial pressure and 260C (500F) shall be subject to Mobil approval. ASTM A453 Gr 660B bolting may be used if higher strength bolting is needed for austenitic flanges with temperatures between 399C (750F) and 649C (1200F) and for ferritic flanges with temperatures between 594C (1101F) and 649C (1200F).

Corrosion protection and maximum ring hardness shall be as specified in ASME B16.20. For corrosive and/or erosive services, consideration should be given to providing a solid Teflon insert for the annular space inside the RTJ gasket, provided the temperature does not exceed 204C (400F). The ID of the insert shall match the pipe bore, and the OD shall match the ID of the RTJ gasket. 6.3.7 Use of gasket types other than those specified requires Mobil approval.

7. VALVES 7.1 General

7.1.1 All NPS 3/4 and larger metallic gate, globe, and angle valves (located abovegrade) shall be the OS&Y type. All of these valves shall have bolted packing glands. (Exception: NPS 3 and smaller brass gate, globe, and angle valves may be the ISRS type with a screwed packing gland.) Underground gate and globe valves should be the NRS type. If they are the OS & Y type, their stem threads shall be protected by installing the valves in a concrete valve box. 7.1.2 NPS 3 and larger valves shall have bolted bonnets or covers. Valves with pressure-seal bonnets may be considered for Class 600 and higher services. Generally, such valves do not conform to API 600, but to ASME B16.34. For services where corrosion or fouling are a factor, such valves shall meet the applicable requirements of API 600. ASME B16.34 valves may be used where corrosion or fouling are not a factor. ASME B16.34 valves shall be tested in accordance with EGS 1130. Other limitations on ASME B16.34 valves are contained in EGS 1130. Except for instrument-type valves, all NPS 2 and smaller steel valves shall have welded or bolted bonnets and covers. Union bonnets are not allowed in steel valves. Also, valves with bonnets or covers secured to bodies by fewer than four bolts, or with bonnets secured by U-bolts, shall not be used. 7.1.3 All NPS 3 and larger valves in Classes 150 and 300 shall have flanged ends. In Classes 600 and higher, valves shall have buttwelding (preferred) or flanged ends. For NPS 2 valves, flanged ends are preferred. However, for NPS 2 valves in Classes 150 and 300, socket weld ends are acceptable (see Paragraph 5.2.1). NPS 11/2 and smaller valves may have socket-welded, buttwelded, flanged, or threaded ends (see Paragraph 5.4). Threaded end valves made of cast iron, malleable iron, or ductile iron are prohibited. 7.1.4 For most services, the required trim for steel and low-chrome alloy valves is API trim #8 (half hardfaced). For Class 600 and higher steam service and all services in Class 1500 and higher, API trim #5 (full hardfaced) is recommended. For valves NPS 2 and smaller, trim #8 is recommended, but the manufacturer's standard trim is normally acceptable. 7.1.5 All resilient seated valves, other than modified API 600/602 gate valves, to be used in flammable or toxic service shall have met the firesafe design requirements of API 607, API 6FA, or BS 6755, Part 2. They shall have met or exceeded the external leakage requirements of the firetest standard. Unless these valves also pass the firetest seat leakage requirements, they shall not be used in open-ended service, as block valves on tanks or vessels with large liquid inventories, as unit block valves, or as emergency shutdown valves. 7.1.6 Geared handwheels shall be supplied for NPS 10 and larger ball and butterfly valves, and for NPS 8 and larger plug valves. Smaller sizes may be lever operated [maximum lever length is 450 mm (18 in.)], provided the torque at any operating condition does not exceed 203 J (150 ft-lb). 7.1.7 Geared handwheels shall be supplied with gate, globe, and angle valves as follows:

7.1.8 Impact wheels, which provide a sudden force to open/close a valve, should be considered for all gear-operated steel valves NPS 8 and larger in Class 600 and higher ratings, and for all steel valves NPS 6 and larger when operated with chain wheels. Impact wheels shall not be used on cast iron valves or on valves with cast iron handwheels, nor shall they be used on quarter-turn valves. 7.1.9 7.1.10 7.2 The requirements for valve electric motor operators shall be as specified in EGE 32-B-18. Pressure relief valves shall conform to the requirements of EGE 32-B-17.

Gate Valves

7.2.1 NPS 2 and larger steel gate valves shall conform to API 600. NPS 11/2 and smaller flanged, socket-welded, and threaded end steel gate valves shall conform to API 602. Use of valves that conform only to ASME B16.34 should be considered only for services with a corrosion allowance of 1.25 mm (0.05 in.) or less, and then only with Mobil approval. 7.2.2 Gate valves shall have a plain solid wedge or a flexible solid (one-piece) wedge. Generally, a plain solid wedge is acceptable for valves NPS 4 and smaller, while a flexible solid wedge is used for valves NPS 6 and larger. 7.3 Segregation and Special Valves

7.3.1 Where shutoff tighter than that usually provided by NPS 4 and larger gate valves is required, or when special valving conditions exist, consideration should be given to the valve types shown in Table 3. MTC should be contacted for specific valve recommendations in severe or special service applications. 7.3.2 When rotating disc valves, expanding plug type valves, butterfly valves, ball valves, and lubricated or nonlubricated plug valves are used, they shall have a positive visible indicator. They also shall be constructed so that the indicator (whether it be the handle or some other type of indicator) cannot be misassembled to give an incorrect indication as to whether the valve is open or closed. The appearance of these valves should not be such that they could be confused with closed gate valves. 7.3.3 Pressure-balanced lubricated plug valves may be used only with Mobil approval. All other lubricated plug valves are prohibited. 7.3.4 Butterfly valves shall meet the requirements of API 609. Valves NPS 24 and larger to be used in water services may be in accordance with API 609, Category A. All other butterfly valves shall be in accordance with API 609, Category B. All butterfly valves intended for flammable or toxic services shall have met the requirements of an approved firetest standard (API 607, API 6FA, or BS 6755, Part 2).

7.3.5 As a minimum, all butterfly valves shall be the lug-type with through-drilled holes (not tapped). Where equipment removal or blanking is required, double flanged butterflies shall be used. These valves shall be capable of holding the full rated system pressure with the downstream flange removed. Wafer-style butterfly valves may be considered for Category D services with Mobil approval. When butterfly valves are used with cement-lined pipe, there shall be clearance between the disc and pipe liner. 7.3.6 Ball valves may be used provided their published pressure-temperature ratings meet the specific requirements of the service for which they are intended. (Note that resilient seats can be very temperature dependent.) 7.3.7 (a) Soft-seated ball valves shall be limited as follows: For sizes # NPS 4 in Classes 150 and 300, the floating ball design is recommended.

(b) For sizes $ NPS 6 in Classes 150 and 300 and for all sizes in Class 600 and higher, the trunnion mounted design is recommended. 7.3.8 Retention of the stem in butterfly, ball, and plug valves shall not depend on the packing gland. A shouldered stem with bottom entry or other suitable design shall be employed. In addition, the design of quarter-turn valves (butterfly, ball, and plug) shall include a means to prevent overturning of the ball/disc/plug. This design shall be independent of any stops provided in the valve operator. 7.3.9 Balls and stems in ball valves #NPS 8 shall be solid alloy material. In larger sizes, electrolessnickel plating (ENP) of the ball is acceptable subject to Mobil approval. Chrome plating is not acceptable. As an alternative, in valves where the ball seating area has a weld-deposited corrosion resistant alloy material, the ball material may be of the same nominal chemical composition as the body material. 7.3.10 Steel plug valves, both lubricated (pressure-balanced) and nonlubricated, shall be fully qualified under an approved firetest procedure (API 607, API 6FA, and BS 6755, Part 2). An exception is that nonlubricated plug valves do not have to pass the firetest seat leakage requirements unless intended for: (a) (b) (c) (d) Open-ended service. Block valves on tanks or vessels with large inventories. Unit block valves. Emergency shutdown valves.

7.3.11 Non-lubricated plug valves may be used provided that all nonmetallic components in the valves can withstand the maximum temperature encountered in service (or during steamout, where applicable). 7.3.12 HF acid valves shall be hydrostatically tested with kerosene. Testing with water is not permitted. Valve body castings intended for HF acid service shall also be pneumatically tested using 2070 kPa (300 psig) helium. 7.3.13 For temperatures below !101C (!150F), all valves shall have extended bonnets. In Classes 150 and 300, for NPS 3 and larger block valves operating below !101C (!150F), MTC-approved butterfly valves are recommended.

Control-Type Valves (Globe, Angle, and Check)

7.4.1 NPS 3 and larger steel globe, angle, and swing check valves shall meet the applicable requirements of API 600. NPS 2 and smaller steel globe, angle, and check valves shall meet the applicable requirements of API 602. [Applicable requirements include body thickness, body and trim materials, stem diameter (where used), and testing per API 598]. Use of valves that conform only to ASME B16.34 requires Mobil approval. 7.4.2 For general services, the preferred check valve is the dual-plate lug style (per API 594) in sizes NPS 3 and larger with through-drilled holes (not tapped). Wafer style dual-plate check valves may be considered for Category D services with Mobil approval. Conventional swing check valves may be used where more rugged construction is required. 7.4.3 7.4.4 (a) For compressor discharge check valves, see EGE 16-B-22. Check valves for sizes NPS 2 and smaller shall be as follows: Ball check valves shall be used in services where fouling can be a problem.

(b) Lift-type (ball, piston, or disc) check valves shall be used in clean services where pigging is not likely. 7.4.5 7.5 Where pigging is to be performed, full-open swing type check valves are required. Drain, Vent, and Sample Valves

7.5.1 For pressure classes 600 and below, steel drain, vent, and sample valves shall have welded or bolted bonnets and integral extended bodies and shall conform to API 602, Class 800. These extended-body valves should also be used for NPS 11/2 and smaller branch connections serving instruments. In pressure Classes 900 and 1500, these valves shall conform to API 602, Class 1500. For pressure Class 1500 valves, welded bonnets are recommended, but bolted bonnets may be considered where in-line repairs may be necessary. 7.5.2 Additional requirements for drain, vent, and sample connection valves are contained in EGE 16-B-1. 7.6 Stem Seals/Packing

7.6.1 Graphitic material has been found to be the most universally applicable packing for rising stem valves. The preferred packing configuration should consist of two end retainer rings made from braided graphite and three intermediate rings made from die-formed flexible graphite with a density of 1120 to 3 3 1280 kg/m (70 to 80 lb/ft ). This configuration is recommended for all hydrocarbon and non-Category D services, and may also be used in Category D services. 7.6.2 Teflon packing may be used in valves in Category D services, or in certain chemical services when approved by Mobil. 7.6.3 Bellows seal valves may be used, with Mobil approval, for services where stem leakage of any kind is unacceptable.

APPENDIX B NOTES TO CLASSIFICATION SHEETS (1) It is not permitted to use materials above or below the temperature limits for which pressure ratings are shown or referenced. Interpolation is permitted between listed pressures. (2) Types 304 and 316 stainless steel valves may be used interchangeably for hydrocarbon and hydrogen services. Consult the MTC Facilities Group if there are questions of their interchangeability in other services. (3) Stainless steel valves are most readily available in Type 316. Consequently, Type 316 valves are specified for both Types 304 and 316 SS line classes. If the corrosion resistance of the welds (and their HAZ) attaching socket weld-end valves is a concern, flanged valves should be used. The same situation exists for Type 347 SS valves, which have been specified for both Types 321 and 347 SS line classes. (4) A wide variety of fiberglass reinforced epoxy and polyethylene piping materials are currently available. The user should check with the individual manufacturers as to the compatibility of their product to design conditions, process medium, and other applicable parameters of the users specific application. (5) In the lower pressure classes, standard weight pipe has been specified in a majority of services. Thinner wall pipe, where the required thickness is calculated using the specific design conditions for the service, may actually be acceptable in many cases. However, other factors need to be considered before using the thinner wall material. These factors include: standardization on certain wall thicknesses within a plant; availability of thinner wall components (especially fittings); overall costs (thinner wall material often requires a premium to produce); and mechanical strength (for spanning between supports, preventing "ovalizing" on supports, and preventing pipe overstress). (6) A number of branch connection tables have been included in several line classes; not every line class has such a table. These tables are intended to represent the requirements for branches under normal operating conditions. For severe services or special applications, refer to Paragraph 8.2 in the text. Note that in cases where reinforcement is required, the amount of reinforcement has not been specified. It has been left to the user to calculate the type, size, thickness, etc. of any required reinforcement.

HISTORY OF CHANGE

The history of change contained herein does not constitute a complete listing of revisions and changes made to this document. Only revisions and changes of significant technical content (per sponsor and Steering Committee) are listed. EGE 16-B-30 1994 EGE 16-B-30 1994 supersedes the 1987 version with the following significant technical changes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Greater use of slip-on flanges is allowed. B16 bolts are recommended for high temperature applications up through a bolt temperature of 595C (1100F). Specific material recommendations are made for standard gaskets and packing. Greater use of high performance butterfly valves is suggested. Typical branch connection charts have been added to several line classes. Several line classes for commonly used services have been developed and added. Items of an informational nature have been removed and incorporated into EGS 1130. Through-drilled lug-style valves (e.g., check, butterfly) are recommended over wafer-style. Requirements for branch connections have been clarified.

atmosphere (e.g., vents, drains) unless they have passed both the external leakage and through leakage (seat leakage) requirements of API 607 firetest standard. (3) Approved plug valves may be used on pump discharge lines, as control valve

blocks, as level column blocks, and other locations where positive shutoff is required and frequent valve operation is necessary. (4) Approved gate valves may be used for normal isolation services that do not require

a positive shutoff. (5) Ball check valves shall not be used, and piston check valves shall not be used in

vertical lines. (6) Approved plug and gate valves may be used as primary block valves for

instruments. (7) Bolting that will be immersed in HF acid shall be K-Monel (Alloy K-500) per

ASTM F468 UNS N05500. (8) O-let type set-on fittings shall not be used, except threadolets may be used for

branch connections provided good fit-up practices are followed. There should be no crevices for scale buildup. (9) Material purchased to A234 WPB shall be made of ASTM A106 Gr. B raw material.

If plate material is used for large diameter welded fittings, the plate shall conform to ASTM A516 Gr. 60 and the following: (a) Limit the sulfur and phosphorus contents of the steel to 0.005 wt. percent

and 0.010 wt. percent, respectively. Limit tramp elements (e.g, columbium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and nickel) by limiting the carbon equivalent (CE) to 0.43. Order plates with sulfide shape control melting practice. (b) Plate materials shall be vacuum degassed and supplied in the normalized

heat treated condition.

NOTES FOR SERIES WC (Contd)

SERIES WC (5 of 5)

(c)

Ultrasonic examination of plate is required. Examination shall be in

accordance with ASME SA 578, Level II, except that defects shall be contained within a 25 mm (1 in.) diameter circle.

(10) The carbon content and carbon equivalent (CE) of A106 Gr. B pipe shall not exceed 0.25 wt. percent and 0.43, respectively.

(11) The edges of all pipe flanges, valve end flanges, valve bonnet flanges, and the like shall be painted with HF-detecting paint (Valspar 220-Y-7 or equivalent) to monitor for leakage.
