MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
WELCOME TO HARVARD WORLD
MODEL UNITED NATIONS
Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, and Friends of WorldMUN,

It is our pleasure and honor to invite your University to attend the 23rd annual World
Model United Nations (WorldMUN) conference, a unique international experience
with over 1500 delegates from more than 60 countries in attendance. WorldMUN
ofers a unique opportunity for students from your University to engage in exciting
discussion with other high-performing college students about the issues gripping
today's global community. You will be challenged to conduct research about your
committee's topics and your assigned country, formulate opinions, and engage your
peers with high-level debate.
Our conference ensures that we include
the most diverse group of college-
level delegates by moving to a new
international city every year, having
traveled to cities such as Geneva,
Switzerland; Beijing, China; Puebla,
Mexico; and in 2013, Melbourne,
Australia. This year we are pleased to
be hosting our conference in Brussels,
Belgium, at the Heart of Europe. We
are confdent that Brussels rich history
and prominence as a diplomatic hub will
compliment our commitment to diversity
and intellectual exchange. WorldMUN
continues to stand out from other Model
United Nations conferences because it
provides an experience just as social as
it is intellectual.
The WorldMUN Spirit - a spirit
of friendship and cooperation across
borders and a deeper understanding
of cultures and perspectives beyond
ones own - encompasses our purpose
for hosting this conference each year,
and the reason it continues to be the
World Championship of Model United
Nations. In order to ensure that students
from your University will form those
irreplaceable friendships, we have
an exciting number of social events
lined up for each night of conference.
However, our conference would not be
what it is today if not for the delegates
of your Universitys caliber. We want to
share the WorldMUN spirit with your
students, and will help to make
04
your participation a reality in any way
possible. WorldMUN 2014 will be held
from 17 March - 21 March 2014 in the
historic Palais dEgmont. Registration
opens 1 September 2013, and can be
found on our website, http://www.
worldmun.org, as well as other
background and logistical information
about our conference. We welcome
delegates from a wide range of Model
UN backgrounds, so even students with
minimal Model UN experience are
welcome to attend. We will be happy
to help your delegation prepare in any
way we can so that your delegates can
have the best experience possible. This
includes our fnancial assistance, which
is available in two forms:
Fee Waivers, which waives delegate/
delegation fees, and Financial Aid, which
assists delegations in fnancing any part
of the cost of attending WorldMUN,
which may include fees, transportation,
food and lodging. If you are interested
in our fnancial assistance program or
have any questions or concerns, please
do not hesitate to contact us. We hope
to hear from your University, and we
look forward to seeing you in Brussels!
Warmly,
The Secretary General &

SECRETARY GENERAL
HISTORY OF WORLDMUN
WorldMUN was founded
in a spirit of idealism and
todays conference wholly
represents that philosophy
in a way that promises a
unique experience to its
more than 2,200 delegates
from over 65 countries.
06
HISTORY
There were about 300 delegates in 18 committees
at the 1992 conference. WorldMUN grew for
several years, and, in 1997, the conference partnered
with its frst host team, the Budapest University
of Economic Sciences. With the introduction of
the host team, the conference began to develop its
social activities to expand the conference experience
beyond committee: Global Village, with delegates
bringing food, drink, songs and traditions from their
homelands, and Cabaret, a global talent show, began
to bookend the conference as much as Opening and
Closing Ceremonies did.
From the conferences 10th year on, it began to
venture beyond the traditional cities of Europe into
Asia Minor, South America, North Africa and the
Middle East, East Asia and even North America. As
the conference moves into its 23rd year, it has grown
to represent the most diverse university conference
in the world. WorldMUN was founded in a spirit
of idealism and todays conference represents
that philosophy in a way that promises a unique
experience to its more than 2,200 delegates from
over 65 countries.
WorldMUN was founded in 1991 by several
Harvard students who were looking to create a
diferent Model United Nations experience. It was
only natural that the conferences frst session would
be in Miedzyzdroje, Poland, a city that had just had
its borders opened with the fall of the Iron Curtain.
07
WHY WORLDMUN
THE WORLDMUN DIFFERENCE
Experience the WorldMUN Spirit
Anyone who has ever stafed or attended a
WorldMUN can attest to the fact that it is
special. WorldMUN distinguishes itself frst and
foremost in its aim. Founded on the WorldMUN
spirit, it encourages delegates from around the
world to share their ideas on international issues
and form connections that will enable them to
implement their visions for the future. Since its
frst session in 1991 in Miedzyzdroje, Poland,
it has grown to be the most diverse university
conference in the world, spanning Europe, Asia,
South America, North Africa, the Middle East
and North America.
Much more than a competitive conference,
WorldMUN ofers a truly unique experience,
encompassing a wide variety of exciting social
events that help delegates make memories and
connections that will last a lifetime. Global Village
allows delegates to share their culture through
food, drink, and traditions from their countries.
Cabaret, a global talent show, is a fun-flled night
that celebrates the talents and culture of WorldMUN delegates. These unique WorldMUN
traditions have become events that delegates look forward to year after year.
As important as its global reach is WorldMUNs global impact. WorldMUNs Resolution
Project, founded by WorldMUN alumni, fosters social entrepreneurship and gives delegates
the chance to turn their innovative ideas into a reality. Resolution fellows help mentor
youth and implement their solutions to global challenges. Staying true to its mission,
WorldMUN continues to shape the lives of its delegates and the world for the better.

08
HARVARD WORLD MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2014
THE RESOLUTION PROJECT
An Appetite for Impact
The Resolution Project inspires young leaders through their proven model of Resolution
Social Venture Challenges (SVCs) and Resolution Fellowships:
Resolution partners with existing youth summits like the one WorldMUN hosts;
others include the Clinton Global Initiative University and the Youth Assembly at the
United Nations.
Resolution invites undergraduate students attending these conferences to propose
social ventures through the SVC. This is a multi-stage competition, combining web-
based submissions, live rounds of presentations, and due diligence.
Resolution then awards Resolution Fellowships to the most compelling leaders with
the most promising proposals from the SVC.
The Resolution Social Venture Challenge allows WorldMUN attendees to build teams
and submit their plans for actual social ventures that will make a positive impact today.
Resolution will provide a grant of up to US $3,000 and strong advisory support for the
winning Resolution Fellows and their ventures. There are currently over 100 Resolution
Fellows working on all 6 inhabited continents in diverse, high-impact felds such as water
resources, sustainability, education, healthcare, and human rights.

WELCOME TO
BRUSSELS
INTRODUCING BRUSSELS
INTRODUCING BRUSSELS
The 23
rd
Session
As the capital of Belgium and the de facto capital of the European Union (EU), Brussels
is an ideal loation for the 23rd session of WorldMUN. Its central location will allow for
an even more diverse contigent of delegates to attend, while its prominence as the home
of numerous international organisations, politicians, and diplomats aligns perfectly with
WorldMUNs commitment to international relations and an intergrated global community.
Home to the European Commission, Parliament and NATO, Brussels is a buzzing, infuential
city where history is made. The city is a key European commercial hub too, a base for
many progressive international companies. But more than that, Brussels is a compact city,
friendly, positive, cosmopolitan, easy to get around. Eating out plays a signifcant part in
Belgian life. Along with the celebrated local cuisine, there are restaurants representing
every corner of the globe. Nightlife is lively, with plenty of concerts, bars and clubs, theatre
and dance - something for everyone. For a major European capital, Brussels is surprisingly
eco-friendly too, peppered with parks and green spaces. A walk through Brussels takes
you through a potted architectural history, from ancient medieval buildings to strikingly
modern edifces, taking in the Art Nouveau stylings of illustrious architect Victor Horta
along the way. With ofcial sanction, huge walls in the city are covered in bright murals,
outsize homages to the countrys many comic book heroes, including Tintin, Lucky Luke,
Largo Winch and the Smurfs.
Brussels city is quickly becoming a trendy spot for weekend getaways and holidays. Apart
from its famous chocolates and beers there are many attractions that most visitors cannot
begin to imagine. It is a centre of European culture, ofcially nicknamed the European
Village, with almost 90 museums, beautiful parks, fascinating walks, trendy restaurants
and bars.

15
WORLDMUN COMMITTEES
WORLDMUN COMMITTEES
Unlike most other conferences, WorldMUN divides all its committees into three
organs: General Assembly (GA), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and
Specialized Agencies (SA). Each of the three substantive organs of WorldMUN
ofers a unique experience. In the large General Assembly committees, delegates
encounter the entire range of countries and opinions that are contained in the United
Nations. Their experience closely mirrors that of delegates in the actual UN. The
size of GA committees means individual delegates will have to form large coalitions
and make personal connections with many other delegates. In the medium-sized
ECOSOC committees, delegates tackle specialized issues in smaller groups. The
smaller size of ECOSOC committees allows delegates to delve into issues in more
depth and get to know their entire committee. In the small Specialized Agency
committees, delegates simulate the powerful UN Security Council or travel to the
past in a historical committee. The small SA committees create intense discussion
and responsive crises that keep delegates on their toes. The SA also features the
Third Party Actors committee, where delegates travel between other committees
acting as members of Non-Governmental Organizations or the press. Each organ
has its own special opportunities for delegates to have a memorable experience, and
we invite you to discover which one suits you best.
General Assembly
The General Assembly encompasses all 193 Members of the United Nations, posing
this unique forum at the deliberative, policymaking, and representative core of
the UN. Established under the original 1945 Charter of the UN, the GA was
conceived alongside the birth of the UN and captures the all-encompassing spirit
of multilateral discussion that motivated the formation of its parent international
organization. Because of the organs inclusiveness, and therefore far-reaching
infuence, GA resolutions have often taken on the role of landmark documents
refecting UN commitment to international issues and serving as a manifesto for
solving these issues. At WorldMUN, the GA is distinguished by well-moderated,
fuid debate; passionate delegates; and necessarily intense and productive caucusing
to forge broad alliances to sustain innovative draft resolutions.
16
Economic and Social
Council & Regional
Bodies
The Economic and Social Council
(ECOSOC) governs approximately 70%
of the the world today. The regional
bodies provide a culturally sensitive
and geographically focused platform
for discussion on vital issues, carrying
out the mission of the UN in diferent
areas of the world. Due to their ideal
size, these committees allow delegates
to not only be challenged by diverse
perspectives, but take the foor multiple
times, ofering a unique opportunity to
engage in intense, yet intimate debate.
One of the most exciting elements of
these committees is the unexpected
crises that erupt throughout committees,
which requires the expertise and
immediate cooperation of delegates
both within and across committees,
providing a unique experience that
challenges delegates to react to real
time events, engage with delegates
from other committees, and even get a
taste of the debate occurring in other
committees.

WorldMUN ofers the most intimate and
crisis-oriented committees, promising
thrilling simulations, refreshing diversity,
and tight-knit environments. The SA

BRUSSELS
The best way to explore Brussels is on foot
and its easily done: all the main sights are
within a 1km radius of the central Grand

neighborhoods check Google maps). But
walking on uneven cobblestones can
become tiring, so if you fnd yourself
at the opposite end of town from your

but can be confusing for frst-time visitors
so do check the transport system STIB/
MIVB website www.stib.be. They have a
detailed map and timetable, you can check
when the next train/tram/bus passes and
they even have an application that you
can download on your phones.
Many metro stations are even worth a
stop because they have been beautifully
decorated by famous Belgian artists; the
Anneessens metro station is decorated
with paintings by Alechinsky and
Dotremont, Bourse/Beurs with paintings
by Paul Delvaux, Stockel with comics of
Tintin and pals, Horta with cast-iron by
Horta in the stations foyer, Porte de Hal
with Schuitens wall compositions entitled
Le Passage Inconnu (The Unknown
Passage) merge old trams and futuristic
vehicles in scenes mirrored in his best
cartoons. Finally, to get around by taxi,
note that only taxis with a blue and yellow
emblem are licensed, you can always call:

ROME

March 22-25: From 329
Rome, come here for history, for artistic enlightenment, or to eat so much pasta and
pizza that you wont leave until someone rolls you out. Nowhere else in the world could
you view the immaculate ceiling of the Sistine Chapel after exploring the dilapidated
remains of ancient settlements, and still dance the night away once the sun has set. Rome
brings every Italian experience together but remains truly unique, and you cant expect
to conquer it all. Are you ready for the challenge?

VENICE
March 12-15: From 379
March 22-25: From 439
Venice boasts plenty of labyrinthine side streets and narrow canals waiting for you to
discover Venices past preserved in dilapidated palazzi, syncretic architectural fourishes,
and even signs written in the vanishing Venetian dialect. An incredible performance art
and music scene, some of Italys best seafood, and busy docks just wait to be discovered.
If youre not afraid to step of the beaten path, youll come to appreciate a subtle Venetian
magic that cant be discovered on a gondola ride or captured in a postcard.
