Space station

We chose to let our space station orbit around Saturns satellite, Dione. The
gravitation of the space station will be ensured by means of a number of motors
positioned around the space station, thus forming a belt.
Our space station has an approximate spherical shape. To calculate its volume, we used
the following formula
The surface of the sphere can be determined by means of the formula
The density of the air is represented by this constant
The centripetal acceleration of the station can be determined whilst using this
formula

Other aspects which we determined are
o the rotation rate $.%&& rpm
o the surface area '.%(" )m

o the volume ".$((.&&$ )m

The Sphere is a very attractive option since it resembles the shape of our +arth.
The difference between the satellite and +arth is represented by the fact that we
would live within it and not on its surface. The spheres outer surface will be covered
with solar panels and other means of collecting energy. ,owever, by using a belt
around the e-uator of the sphere to provide gravity, one can manage to ensure optimal
living conditions only at the +-uator of the satellite, a fact proven by numerous
scientists in the past decades. Therefore, despite its volume, the spheres living area
will decrease.

/n order to be able to survive on a space station, the human beings need to lead a life
similar to that on +arth. 0s a result, gravity represents an utmost important aspect in
the design of a space station. ,umans could suffer a series of harmful and serious
conse-uences if exposed to 1ero2gravity for extended periods of time. Therefore,
gravity must be created through artificial means.

The aspect which we considered is creating artificial gravity by installing a belt
around the stations e-uator, which would generate the gravitational field.
Technically, this is not really artificial gravity, but gravity itself. The drawbac) of this
method is that it re-uires an extremely large mass to produce minute amounts of
gravity and is therefore uneconomical. ,owever, given the scientific brea)throughs of
the last decade, we thin) that one can manage to develop a system that would prove
itself to be appropriate from an economical standpoint. 3uch research has been done
over the past years to find the suitable comfort 1one for artificial gravity. This
research has indicated that 4earth2normal5 gravity is obtainable, provided a number of
elements wor) together effectively. These are that the stations radius, the centripetal
acceleration, the angular velocity and the tangential velocity *$ *" wor) together to
create feelings as close as humans feel on +arth as they move around their
environments.
