Est. Time Procedures Assessment
8:15 - 8:20 Time for students to set up, get instruments
together. As students enter, they will have a short
pretest, assessing their knowledge of music style
markings.
Formal - I will use the pretest as a
way to gauge student knowledge
for future lessons regarding style.
8:20 - 8:25 Listen to Part 1 of Sample Track. Ask:

What do you think of when you hear this music?


Why do you think that, what do you hear in the
music that makes you believe that?

Listen to Part 2 of Sample Track. Ask:

What do you hear in this track?


What is different from the rst track?

Listen to Part 3 of Sample Track. Ask:

What feelings or emotions does this make you


feel? What in the music makes you feel that way?

Listen to Part 4 of Sample Track. Ask:

What was different in this track compared to the
last track? Does the change the feeling of the
track?

Informal - Lead discussion
towards the different musical
styles and how they can change
the mood and feeling of the piece.
8:25 - 8:40 Rehearse Coldwater Creek. While rehearsing,
ensure students are playing correct rhythms,
notes, and playing together.
Informal - Listen for breaks in
sounds, matching pitches, and
correct rhythms.
8:40 - 8:45 Class Wrap-up:

-Tell students which sections they need to
specically practice and how.
Informal - Throughout the lesson, I
will listen and evaluate individual
student performance.

then have the class echo back to me what they
hear.

Demonstrate staccato from a neutral articulation
by playing four neutral notes on Concert Bb, then
switching to 2 neutral 2 staccato.

Dene Staccato:
Light, separated, with space between the notes

Show visual representation of staccato notes.

Demonstrate accent from a neutral articulation by
playing four neutral notes on Concert Bb, then
switching to 2 neutral 2 accented.

Dene Accent:
Heavy and Stressed, with weight on the note

Show visual representation of accented notes.
Informal - Listen for difference in
note lengths while playing.

Lesson 3
8:25 - 8:40 Rehearse Eccosaise for Military Band (from
Tradition of Excellence) with new, dened styles.
Isolate Theme A for accent in m6 and m10, and
staccato in m7-8 and m11-12.

Isolate Theme B for Accents on beat 2 in
measures 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 20. Isolate
staccato in measures 15 and 19.

Reinforce performance practice decisions:
-Dynamics in A theme - mf 1st time, mp 2nd time
-Playing order - Woodwinds 1st time, Brass 2nd
time
Informal - Listen for breaks in
sounds, matching pitches, correct
rhythms, and matching
articulations and note lengths.

hear.

Demonstrate staccato from a neutral articulation
by playing four neutral notes on Concert Bb, then
switching to 2 neutral 2 staccato. Then switch from
Staccato to Tenuto.

Ask students: What do you hear? What is the
difference between the rst two notes and last two
notes?

Dene Tenuto:
Smooth and connected, but not slurred or tied.

Have students dene tenuto on their Musical
Styles Handout.

Discuss how a passage of music can be marked
Legato.
Informal - Listen for difference in
note lengths while playing.
8:25 - 8:40 Rehearse Procession from Water Music (from
Traditions of Excellence) with new, dened styles.
Isolate Legato style from written accents.

Work on m21, ensure students do not slow tempo
down. Use metronome if need be to demonstrate
how connected notes are not faster or slower than
separated notes.
Informal - Listen for breaks in
sounds, matching pitches, correct
rhythms, and matching
articulations and note lengths.
8:40 - 8:45 Class Wrap-up:

playing four neutral notes on Concert Bb, then
switching to 2 neutral 2 marcato.

Dene Marcato:
Short and Separated like staccato, but Heavy and
Stressed, with weight on the note like an accent

Have students create a Marcato visual
representation on the backside of their Musical
Styles Handout. Marcato Visual will have the same
note shape as the Accented style, but not length of
the Staccato style.
Informal - Listen for difference in
note lengths while playing.
8:30 - 8:40 Rehearse Procession from Water Music with
new, dened styles. Isolate legato style from
written accents.

Rehearse Coldwater Creek with new, dened
marcato style.
Informal - Listen for breaks in
sounds, matching pitches, correct
rhythms, and matching
articulations and note lengths.
8:40 - 8:45 Class Wrap-up:
