Data Communication Networks

(EE-3402)
Spring 2010
Lab Description (Catalogue):
Students will be taught the use of computer software OPNET/Packet Tracer for Modeling
and simulation of different Networks Students will also perform !arious e"periments
in!ol!ing switches and routers for building #$N/%$N The lab will end with a group
pro&ect in!ol!ing design and implementation of a network solution
Software: OPNET and Packet Tracer
Topics to be covered during Lab in weeks: The lab will co!er the following scripts'
( Ethernet Cabling
) *P O!er!iew+ %ired #$N using ,TP cables+ -ile sharing in #$N using static

(( ,sing Media <ate=%a> 9outer for %$N using 9*P Protocol
Objectives:
( This $c?uire skills necessar> for data communication networks lab
) Promote group work and staff=student interaction
/ The lab e"periences laborator> pro&ects using the OPNET software OPNET is a
leading software product for simulation and modeling of network applications@
protocols@ and technologies OPNET *T <uru and Modeler are the most popular
OPNET software products for educational use *t allows a user to use point=and=
click to create and configure simple or sophisticated network s>stems@ and
conduct simulations to stud> and anal>Ae the s>stem.s performance OPNET
Modeler has additional functionalit> that allows the user to modif> e"isting
s>stem components and create new ones
0 The lab will soon ha!e routers and switches to teach the management of Ethernet@
fast Ethernet configurations The #$N@ which will be built in the lab@ will include
a switch that will act as a backbone of the #$N %e plan to link the router with
the switch as well to connect to the %$N
Learning Outcomes
1> the end of the lab@ it is e"pected that the student will be able to'
( %ork with the basic components of networks' cabling s>stems@ test kits@ hubs@ and
switches+
) *dentif> and describe the functions of basic components re?uired to build data
communication networks@ both local area and wide area+
/ Describe the process of con!erting information from its original form@ to a form
that can be transmitted through data networks+
0 Discuss how different t>pes of transmission media are affected b> their ph>sical
characteristics and the role that multiple"ing pla>s in data networks+
2 Describe specific processes and functions that appl> to a la>ered network model@
with specific reference to the OS* reference model and TCP/*P+
5 Pro!ide a complete discussion of Ethernet technologies+
7 Subnet a network using multi=le!el subnetting and pro!ide a subnetted *P design
based on a gi!en topolog> or business profile+
8 Configure a router based on a gi!en network topolog>+
: Describe the process b> which routing protocol 39*P4 update information within a
network+
(; *dentif> and discuss different technologies and approaches to implement
congestion control and ?ualit> of ser!ice+
