Explanation of the Literacy Log Assignment for 11th Grade American History

Literacy Logs: There are ten topics you are assigned to research and write an
informative report. This is called a literacy log. You are required to read from creditable
resources and paraphrase (write in your own words) your findings. Each topic will be
written on its own page for a total of ten pages.

Each one-page response will be divided into three sections: Definition, Importance,
and Personal Awareness.

Definition is the general explanation of this person,
place, event, or idea and where the information was found.

Importance is an explanation of why this person, place, event, or idea is something or
someone everyone should know.

Personal Awareness is an explanation of whether or not you knew about the topic before
researching it and why.

You may not use Wikipedia. These topics relate to your upcoming history courses at
Florence High School, so not only are you fine-tuning your writing and research skills,
but also gleaning information on important topics for your history class.

New Deal McCarthyism
Marshall Plan Civil Rights Act of 1964
Brown vs. Board of Education Watergate
Johnsons War on Poverty Radical Islamic Terrorism

All students have been given usernames and passwords for these resources; however, we
expect that some may forget. If this happens, please feel free to email our librarian, Kim
Gunter at kim.gunter@rcsd.ms. Be sure to include your childs first and last name in the
body of the email. Podcasts and written instructions for each resource are available
on the FHS Library site.

Directions for formatting the paper are as follows:

Students should type the reports using the MLA format:
Use size 12 font
Times New Roman font style
Double space
1-inch margins
inch header
No contraction use
