CLASSY AWARDS ANNOUNCES 8 NONPROFIT WINNERS LIVE ON STAGE
Action Against Hunger Awarded at the Largest Social Impact Awards in the Country
May 8, 2014 San Diego, CA The CLASSY Awards, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, announced eight Winners live on stage this past weekend at the 5 th Annual CLASSY Awards Ceremony. More than 3,600 programs worldwide were evaluated during a yearlong research process. The Winners were selected by the Leadership Council, a prestigious board of 100+ leaders and experts in the social sector.
The Ceremony featured co-hosts Elizabeth Gore, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the United Nations Foundation and Kenna, Founder of Summit on the Summit and Grammy-Nominated Musician, along with 12 influential speakers.
Action Against Hunger was proud to be among the eight winners, taking top honors in the Poverty & Hunger Relief category for our innovative and integrated nutrition programming in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Action Against Hunger is all about providing emergency and sustainable solutions to hunger. Were proud to be honored in a particular way for our lifesaving integrated nutrition efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, explained Andrea Tamburini, Director of Operations, accepting the award for Action Against Hunger. The CLASSY Award means a great deal not just to me, but to our hardworking staff in D.R. Congo, and to the more than 5,000 men and women who keep our programs running day in and day out, in over 40 countries around the world.

In D.R. Congo since 1997, Action Against Hunger has worked closely with the Ministry of Health to build local capacity, strengthen health systems, and provide emergency care. Theyve trained thousands of health workers, equipped hundreds of hospitals and health centers, and provided lifesaving therapeutic care for tens of thousands of severely malnourished children. In 1993, they developed a revolutionary milk formula that slashed mortality rates by 75% for severe malnutrition. In 1997, the milk formula helped create Plumpynut, the first ever ready-to-use therapeutic food, which brings cure rates up to 90-95%.
