OnThursdayweheldaparentcoeemorningwherewefocused
onthesafetyofourElementarySchoolchildren.Webeganby
talkingaboutwhatweasaschoolhaddoneoverthepreceding
weeksintermsofreviewingstudentsafety.Somepoints
highlightedwere:

specialistclassesandinacviesaerschool
Areviewofouraendanceprotocolsintermsofouraerschool
acviesprocedures
Howweaddressbeingsafewithinourcurriculum
OurhiringproceduresofallwhoworkatISM

Wethentalkedaboutthelanguageparentscanusewhentalking
totheirchildrenaboutbeingsafe,especiallyinregardtotheir
body.Weacknowledgedthat,atthispointinme,theschool
doesnotaddressthesubjectofbodilyawarenessandsafeand
unsafetouchingexplicitlywithintheElementarycurriculum,but
wewillbeincorporangthisintoourframeworkforthestartof
thenewschoolyearinAugust,2014.Wenotedhowimportantit
wastoempowerchildrentotalkaboutsuchmaerstotrusted
adultsbutwithoutbeingalarmist.

Thenalpartofthesessionwasdevotedtosmallgroup
discussions,whereparents,facilitatedbyourCounselors,were
abletoexpresstheirconcernsandoutlinehowtheyaddressedsuchmaersintheirfamilies.

Themostimportantelementofthemorningwasthatwehavebegunaconversaonwithourcommunityaboutwhatbeing
safeatISMlookslike.OurGuidanceDepartmentwillbeprovidingresources,specicallytailoredtoESparentsnextweek.
Meanme,theLeadershipTeamwillbeplacingtheissueofstudentsafetyandwellbeingfrontandcenterasoneofour
schoolwidegoalsforthenextacademicyear.

Thankyoufortakingthemetocomeontocampusanddiscussyourchildslearningwiththeirteacher.Thiswastherst
mewehavehadasecondroundofconferencesandassuch,wehavetakenfeedbackfromthePTA,ourteachingfaculty

eachyear,hencethecomposionofthevaccineisupdatedannually.Fortropicalcountriestheuispresentyearroundwith

EveryonewithavalidISMID,teachersandtheirchildrenmayparcipateinthisvaccinaonsession.Pleasecompletethevaccina

notlaterthanThursday,May15.Thevaccineswillthenbeorderedandnofurtherregistraonscanbeaccepted.

Re-enrollment: SY1415 Returning Students: Medical Update
DearParents,
Asyoumayknow,foranumberofyearswehavehadrequiredmedicalcheckupsforstudentsatdierentstagesin
theirschoollives:G1;G5;G9.Inrecognionoftheincreasingconcernabouthearthealth,especiallyinconjuncon
withphysicalexerciseinatropicalclimate,weshallbeintroducingamandatoryElectroCardiogram(ECG)testfor
olderstudents.

SuddenCardiacDeathinAdolescents,especiallyduringsporngacvity,isarecognizedsyndromeandwellover100
childrenayeardieofthisintheUSA.Medicaladviceisthatitmakessensetotestonlystudentswhoare12yearsold
andbeyond.Inlightofthis,weshallnowhavetwothresholdsformedicalexaminaonsinsteadofthepresentthree.
ThesewillbeinGrade1andGrade6.AtGrade1,therewillbeaphysicalexaminaonperformedbyadulyaccredited
doctorasisthecaseatpresent.AtGrade6,therewillbeasimilarphysicalexaminaonbutwiththeaddedcompo
nentofanECG.AllnewstudentsbetweenG1andG5willhaveaphysicalexaminaon;allnewstudentsfromG6
onwardwillhaveaphysicalexaminaonandtheECG.

Inorderto"grandfatherout"ourpresentcohortofstudents,pleasenote:
IncomingG6studentswillhaveanECG,butwillnotneedaphysicalexaminaon,sincethiswasdonewhenthey
enteredG5
IncomingG9studentswillhavethefullmedicalexaminaonandanECG.
