TECHNI GOLD

25 ES

TECHNI GOLD

25 ES is a neutral non-cyanide gold plating formulation suitable for electronics,

semiconductor, wafer, electroforming, or general applications. Without additives, the solution
yields soft, bright-to-satin-bright deposits meeting the requirements of Type III A of MIL-G-45204
C (ASTM B488-95 as revised).

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION

Tanks: Temperature stabilized natural Polypropylene, Polyethylene, rigid PVC, Koroseal
lined steel with Plastisol coated exterior or other materials that will not
contaminate the plating solution.

Anodes: Platinized Titanium or Columbium. Anodes are available coated single or double
sided in thicknesses of 125 and 250 microinches. Contact your Technic
representative for assistance in selecting the appropriate anode for your
application.

Anode Bags: Not required.

Heaters: Titanium, low density, Silica Sheathed, Teflon Coated or PVDF-clad panel
heaters with thermostatic control.

Filtration: Continuous, using leached 1 5 micron (1 micron preferable) woven
polypropylene filter cartridges with a flow rate of three (3) five (5) times the tank
volume/hour.

EQUIPMENT PREPARATION

Tanks:

Prior to makeup, the process tank and ancillary equipment should be thoroughly cleaned and then
leached with a sulfuric acid solution.

This procedure is particularly important for new equipment or equipment previously used for other
processes.

Leaching Procedure:

Please follow the recommended leaching procedure below. DO NOT install the plating solution
until the entire leaching procedure has been completed.

NOTE: If the tank walls are heavily coated with materials which cannot be removed by scrubbing,
a tank liner is recommended.

1. Remove the anodes and filters from the tank to be used. Dispose of filter cartridges and
anything else that may be contaminated with previous process chemicals.

2. Thoroughly wash down the tank and ancillary equipment with clean water.

3. Recirculate water throughout the complete system to remove water soluble materials.

4. Discard the recirculated water.

5. Add the cleaning solution to the tank and heat to 38 50 C (100 - 120 F). Recirculate
the solution throughout the tank and filter pumps for 4 - 8 hours.

6. Drain the cleaning solution and rinse the tank with clean DI water.

7. Fill the tank with clean DI water and recirculate throughout the tank and filter pumps.

8. Discard the rinse water.

9. Add the leaching solution and recirculate throughout the tank and filters pumps. Leave the
leaching solution in the tank for a minimum of eight (8) hours.

10. Drain the leaching solution and rinse the tank with clean DI water.

11. Fill the tank with clean DI water and recirculate throughout the tank and filter pumps.

12. If the tank had previously been used for lead-containing processes, analyze for lead (Pb)
and bismuth (Bi) concentrations in the rinse water. If the concentration of either is greater
than 5 ppm, discard the rinse water and repeat steps 9-12. If concentrations are both less
than 5 ppm, proceed to next step.

13. Discard the rinse water.

14. Prepare the plating solution according to the recommended specifications.

4. Check solution pH. If necessary adjust to pH 6.5-7.0 with Techni Gold

25 ES pH+ or
Techni Gold

25 ES pH- as needed.

5. Add gold as TG-25 Concentrate. Mix thoroughly.

6. Adjust to final volume with deionized water. Continue mixing and raise to operating
temperature. The solution is now ready for use.

REPLENISHMENT: TG-25 Concentrate contains 2.0 tr. oz. (62.2 gm) of gold per liter. Add one
troy ounce gold (=31.1 g or 500 ml) as TG-25 Concentrate every 4.2 ampere-hours.

pH ADJUSTMENT: The pH of Techni Gold

25 ES may be raised if necessary with Techni Gold

25 ES pH+, or with a 20-40% solution of sodium hydroxide.

The pH of Techni Gold

25 ES may be lowered if necessary with Techni Gold

25 ES pH-.

SPECIFIC GRAVITY: The specific gravity of Techni Gold

25 ES tends to rise slowly in use.

Depending on application, the solution can be used at specific gravities up to about 30 Baum.

COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONS:

TG-25E Additive A is an arsenic-containing additive that can be used to increase the overall
deposit brightness without significant increase in deposit hardness or loss of current efficiency.
Normal dosage levels are from about 5-30 parts per million. Addition of 10 grams TG-25E
Additive A per gallon (2.6 g/l) of plating solution provides a concentration of 30 ppm arsenic.

TG-25 Additive E is an organic brightening agent that can be used to increase both brightness
and hardness of the deposit. Normal dosage is 5-10 milliliters per U.S. gallon (1.3-2.6 ml/l), in
which range the Additive functions primarily as a brightener only.

The brightness and uniformity of the deposit are best controlled by Hull cell. To increase the
brightness, add Techni Gold

Additive E (0.5-1.0 ml/l increments). If there is not a sufficient

response, Additive A should be added in increments of 0.45g/l (5ppm As) until the desired
brightness level is achieved.

TG-25E Buffer Salts - The concentration of TG-25E Buffer Salts tends to decrease slowly over
time (weeks to months). In order to maintain chemical stability of the solution, the concentration
should be analyzed periodically and adjusted as necessary. An analytical method is attached.
The nominal concentration of TG-25E Buffer Salts in the plating solution is 6 ounces per gallon
(45 grams per liter). When adding TG-25E Buffer Salts to the bath it is useful to add 2-3 grams
of TG-25E Stabilizer per ounce (28.3 g) of TG-25E Buffer Salts replenished.

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

BEFORE HANDLING ANY CHEMICAL PRODUCTS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ THE
APPROPRIATE MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET.

When handling chemicals, always wear the prescribed protective clothing as detailed in the
appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet.

In case of skin contact, flush affected area with copious amounts of cold, clean water for at least
10 minutes. In case of serious exposure, particularly for eyes, obtain medical attention.

STORAGE

Store all chemicals in upright, original containers away from direct sunlight and in a dry area at 10
32C. Keep container closed when not in use.
