CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM
Out of the fact that Indonesian economic development brings Indonesia
to be an industrial country, Indonesia is still considered as an agricultural
country. At least, there are two reasons why this country is still regarded as
agricultural country. First, agriculture is still one of leading sector in
Indonesians economy. Even, in the second quarterly 2011 its production
reached 15,4%. Second, around 33% people of productive age (>15 years old)
work in the farmer field.
Ironically, as an agricultural country, Indonesia doesnt have its
independence and sovereignty to fulfil food necessity for its citizen. This
problem is shown by the number of Indonesias food import comodity which
is still high, around 7% of the entire Indonesian import. Based on BPS (Biro
Pusat Statistik) data, last year Indonesia imported 28 food comodities, such as
paddy, maize, wheat, sugar, flour, butter, milk, and other main foods to
Indonesia. Even, during past few days, shockingly we have to admit that our
country imported salt from China and India, whereas in fact we are one of the
countries whose coast is the longest in the world.
Those facts above show that the Indonesias demand to import foods
does not decreasing year by year, but keep increasing. Maize, for example, in
semester one in 2010, its comodity import reached 600 thousand ton, and in
2

2011 it reached 2 million ton. This situation happened not only for maize, but
also for other main foods. It will be a serious matter if the number of
Indonesias food imports increases more and more.
Based on research conducted by the government, this problem is not
only due to limited food supply in the country, but more because of the
failure of plant seedling by farmers. In Gowa, South Sulawesi, for example,
the rice plant seedling is threatened to fail since rain keeps falling during
weeks. The condition becomes worse when stem borers also attack main
foods plant as what happened in Mamminasae. This declining production of
staple commodities makes the food conditions in our country is getting worse.
Another problem also happened in Madiun as stated by Kartika
(http://rri.co.id/index.php/detailberita/detail/11499). She said that farmers in
Kaibon village, Geger, Madium worried and complained since the seeds of
rice plants subsidized by government have poor quality. It, of course, leads
the risk of crop failure. That is why Subakir, farmers in Geger district argued
that the seed provided by government should be examined thoroughly before
it is distributed to farmers so that the crop has a good quality.
Responding to the crop failure condition in Indonesia, government has
tried to run some programs, such as the need to expand dam building for dry
land areas, the implementation of integrated pest management, and the
improvement of the plant seed quality. In doing so, the government spends
three billion to only cope those problems. However, according to Badan
3

Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo
Nugroho, it is not easy to realize those ideas.
Based on those problems faced by farmers and government, the
researcher is eager to find out an alternative way to improve the quality of
seed plant. The researcher wants to know whether classic music gives
positive effect to plants since based on Dr. Masaru Emotos research result
classic music gives very good effect to fetus. His research on human fetus
shows that when water (in mothers uterus) listens to a calming music, i.e.
classic music, the water molecules form a beautiful hexagonal crystal. Since
the water has a very good quality, the fetus of course will have a good quality
too. Whereas in fact, water is one of the main factors to grow seed plant and
to affect its quality. With this reason, the researcher wants to observe,
whether classic music can give possitive effects to the growth of beansprouts
because this plant contents of water inside them.

B. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM
Classical music has a lot of benefits to our mental and soul. Besides,
listening to classical music since we were children may help our brain
development, especially its language comprehension and understanding
ability. Even, some scientists argues that classic music can accelerate the
growth of fetus. The research conducted by Europe and America scientist
shows that when a fetus listen to Bach or Mozarts music, the music can
4

expand the brain volume, add the main nerves activity, and help to stimulate
imagination stimulation when the child grows.
Spains scientist also found that fetus can distinguish whether the music
is good or bad. Although the fetus is still in mothers uterus, a fetus whose
birth is estimated twelve weeks later is found to like listening Mozart or
Vivaldis music ( kind of calming music with a high harmony, and very
different to the heavy-metal and rap music). Besides, research also shows that
classic music can calm a premature baby down. Usually, premature babies
show that they feel uncomfortable from their attitude, their expression, or also
from the heart rate which is increasing. However, when they listen to classical
music, their attitude, expression, and heart rate will be normal.
Those benefits can be obtained because of the effect of classical music
to water in moms uterus. Classical music gives influence to fetus since 70%
of our body consists of water. Dr. Masaru Emoto said that water or liquid has
awareness. Therefore, when it listens to a calming music, the water molecules
form a beautiful hexagonal crystal. This crystal which the fetus needs makes
it grow optimally and gives a lot of benefits to it.
There are some factors which influence the growth of plants. One of
them is water. Scientists believe that the plant will grow well if it absorbs
high quality water. That is why the researcher wants to know whether
classical music also gives positive effect to the growth of plants since water is
really necessary for plants.

C. LIMITATION OF THE PROBLEM
Due to the time constraint, this research is limited only to find out the
effect of classical music to the growth of beansprout. Beansprout is used as
the representation of other plants since beansprout can grow fast and be
observed in days. Also, classic music is chosen since it is a kind of calming
music and has been proven to give effect to waters quality which is one of
the main factors to grow a good seed plant.

D. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM
Based on the discussion above, the main problems can be formulated in
the following question: What is the effect of classical music to the growth of
beansprout?

E. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Based on the problem formulations, the writer formulates two
objectives of this study. Those two objectives of this study are as follows:
To know weather classical music gives effect to the growth of beansprouts.

F. BENEFITS OF THE STUDY
This research is expected to give contribution in two fields, such as
scientific and agricultural fields.
6

In the scientific field, this research aims to provide a tested theoretical
of the way to grow plants so that the farmers will have another alternative
way to plant their seeds.
In the agricultural field, the alternative way will be implemented to
produce a lot of good crops. It means that it would be the main income in
Indonesia. For entrepreneurs who work in agricultural section, implementing
this researchs result to their bussiness will increase their production as well.
For individual entrepreneur, by having information of the music effect to the
plants, they know what follow up treatment they should take for their plants.
