KASHRUT LESSON PLAN

What I want to achieve in these lessons is I want to make the pupils aware of what constitutes a kosher
and non Kosher animal, fish and bird. Children should recognize different Kosher symbols. I also want to
make the pupils aware of the commandment in Devarim, Parshat Reeh [14:21] You shall not cook a kid
in its mothers milk.

Continually emphasize that Judaism is not an all-or-nothing religion. Every time we do eat something
Kosher its a Mitzvah.

Lesson 1:
Discuss the signs of a Kosher animals, fish and birds. Teach them Kosher song. Show them slide show of
different animals and let them point out which animals are kosher and which are not.

Lesson 2:
Venn diagram Smart Board lesson. Students demonstrate and internalize what theyve learned about
the signs of kashrus of various animals. Those animals possessing both signs should be moved to the
middle overlapping area. These are the kosher animals. The camel and rabbit should be on the right
indicating that the only chew their cud but do not have cloven hooves. The pig should be alone on the left
indicating that it has cloven hooves but does not chew its cud. The dog and lion should remain outside
the Venn diagram indicating that they possess neither sign. Upon completion of the Venn diagram, the
answer key should be pulled out via the tab on the right side of the screen.

Lesson 3:
To further clarify which animals are kosher and which are not, students should move the animals into the
Teiva. There are two of each non-kosher animal and seven of each kosher animal. Only the correct
number of animals is available to move, so when the supply of a particular animal is depleted after only
two, this indicates that the animal was not kosher.

Check boxes to test students understanding of which animals are kosher. Drag the word KOSHER or
NOT KOSHER into the check box for each animal. Check box will return a green check indicating a

correct answer or red X indicating an incorrect answer. Click on any animal for a hint about that animal.

Lesson 4:
Go on a Kosher hunt. Sort through food items and draw at least 3 different Kosher symbols on
your page. Discuss what the P or D stand for.

Lesson 5:
Discuss the Mitzvah of separating meat and milk. Bring bag fill of food items. Sort each food into
different baskets labled Milk, Meat, Parev.

Lesson 6:
Show slide show of all the non-kosher birds listed in the Torah. Discuss why birds of prey are not
Kosher. Firstly that Kashrut is a Chok something that we ultimately do not understand. But
one thing that we could learn from Kashrut is - What characteristics do birds of prey possess? Do
we want to internalize those aggressive characteristics?
