State Updates New Staff: You should have all received and read the email sent on Tuesday announcing that we have filled the Public Health and Problem Gambling Prevention Coordinator position. Roxann J ones will be joining our team on May 12. We are excited as she has worked in problem gambling in the past in J ackson County and has knowledge and experience with outreach, which will be a focus of efforts in the coming years from the state.
2015 Outreach Calendar: The student art has been selected for the 2015 calendar. We received lots of submissions this year with good representation from all over Oregon. One of Roxanns first tasks will be the ideas regarding the design and facts/information that will be included. Our plan is to have calendars and flyers for the 2016 art search printed and ready for distribution by mid-August for those of you that may want them when making connections with teachers during late August and the start of the school year.
OHT Data Update: Received status update from Rusha this week that updated data and error occurring from data system almost completed. She hopes to have something to us by mid-May.
Lottery partnership: Had meeting with the Oregon Lottery again this week regarding the outreach efforts and redesign of the helpline webpage and branding of new materials. Timeline for completion has been moved back, however hope to be completed by August with helpline and new materials. Currently taking feedback on their ideas for the helpline, logo, new name, etc. and this information will be provided to the materials review group of Nancy M, Andy, C, J ulie H, and Becca H next week. If you want to be included on this workgroup, please let Greta know. Otherwise, Lottery representatives came to the conference last week and presented on current outreach efforts and research they have been doing. It was a well-received presentation by providers and they will be asked to present at the J une 12 all provider webinar on this and the redesign efforts.
Upcoming Regional Trainings: PGS will be hosting regional trainings this summer across the state. The purpose of these meetings is to continue to talk about outreach, encourage collaboration among prevention and treatment providers regarding outreach efforts, etc. and to develop a network on local providers to assist each other. It will be important for all providers to attend the training in their region. Dates are almost finalized, trainings will be from 9-3 and lunch is provided. Locations will be Portland, Albany, Tillamook, Baker City, Bend and Grants Pass. An email with registration and other information will be coming soon.
Prevention Summit: Registration is now open and I would encourage everyone to attend, if possible. Greta and Roxann, along with Wes Wood from Voices of Problem Gambling Recovery, will be there to meet the pg prevention coordinators.
J uly Meeting Date: Since J ulys scheduled meeting occurs on the J uly 4 holiday, committee discussed whether to reschedule or cancel meeting. It was decided to cancel the meeting for the month of J uly.
Discussion Topics:
Spring Prevention Summit: Opportunity to partner with the 9 Tribes At the time of this meeting, an agenda has not been distributed; however the summit will involve partnerships with Tribes and tribal culture and systems, among other non-tribal topics.
Deschutes County Question: What are folks doing around suicide prevention and problem gambling? Yamhill County Reply: They did a presentation on this for National Public Radio (NPR) that will be aired in J une. Also doing a push around Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training for local businesses.
Check In and Sharing: Marion County: One of the 2015 PGS calendar artwork winners. Currently in an OLCC collaboration, and are contracting with PAXIS for A&D and problem gambling retailer project and hope to get this rolling during summer 2014. Tillamook County: Providing a Protecting you, protecting me program to first graders at the elementary school. Curriculum is very healthy brain approach. An 8 th grader from Tillamook county was selected for calendar artwork. Lane County: Retail reward/reminder: found out we can do this-planning environmental scans around Lottery, and to get baseline data around youth purchasing lottery tickets. Reminder: requirement for tobacco due end of J une. Yamhill County: Doing an inspection with OLCC. Yamhill will be presenting for the May 6 & 13 client finding outreach webinars. They will also be offering a curriculum training Boys and Girls Circle. These are two days each for the boys and the girls segments. There is still room if anyone is interested in participating. Multnomah County: Completed first problem gambling prevention procurement-will meet with V.O.A. for an annual plan.
