Fluency means reading at a good pace with accuracy and expression.
The more you practice reading a selection, the better your fluency will be.
For this activity you will need a timer a stopwatch, a sand timer or clock
with a second hand will do that can measure one minute. You will also
need someone to help you.
Directions: Read Page Two out loud. Have your helper use the timer and tell
you to stop reading when the timer measures one minute. Record how many
words you read on the chart below. This is your WPM (Words per Minute).
Do this four times. You can practice in between!
Remember accuracy and expression!
Words Per Minute (WPM)
1st reading
2nd reading
3rd reading
4th reading
Now do some math. Example
Take your WPM for your 4th reading. __________ 58
__ __
Subtract your WPM for your 1st reading. __________ 40
The difference is how many more words 18
you are reading in one minute.
Here is some help in counting words.
