asynchronous,severalkeyareasmustbeunderstood.EMCtypicallyreferstotheseasthepainpointsofremote

EMCRecoverPointisanenterprisescalesolutiondesignedtoprotectapplicationdataon
heterogeneousSANattachedserversandstoragearrays.RecoverPoint providesmanyfeaturesthat
makeitauniqueandtestedsolutionforbackupandrecovery.
RecoverPointallowsfortheaccessofapointintimeimage,eitherlocallyoratanothersite,while
stillperformingreplication.Theabilitytoaccessdatafromacopyallowsfortestingwithout
sacrificingprotection.Thisfeaturealsoisintegratedwithvariousapplications,suchasExchange,
SQL,andVMware.Thisallowsforapplicationdrivenpointintimecopies.RecoverPointalsocanbe
usedwithVMAXsSRDFfeaturetocreateadditionalprotection.
Pointintimecopiescanbecreatedforeachwrite,ortheusercanchoosetheamountofdatalag
thatcanbetoleratedforan application.Thisoptionisconfigurableforeachgroupofvolumes,and
canbeeditedatanytime.

Therightremotereplicationsolutioncanlimityourexposuretoplannedandunplanneddowntime,
enablingnonstopoperation.Perhapsyoualsoneedtoprovideyourorganizationwithefficient

TheintroductionofUnisphereforRecoverPointallowsforconsistentmanagementinterfacesand

TheRecoverPointRESTAPIinterfaceenablescustomscriptingandapplicationsviastandardRESTful
protocols.
ImprovedintegrationwithVMwareSiteRecoveryManager(SRM)allowsfortestingandfailoverto
anypointintimecopy.IntegrationofRecoverPointlocalreplicationandSRDFallowsforlocal

Previously,thiswasonlysupportedwithfibre connectivity.Regardlessofwhetheroverfibre orIP,

BeforeRecoverPoint3.5therewerethreetypesofavailablewritesplitters:host,arrayand
intelligentfabricsplitters.AVPLEXSplittercontainsawritesplitterthatisbuiltintothe
VPLEXengine.ThisisasimplemethodtoimplementaRecoverPointbusinesscontinuity
solutiontoprotectthemobility,availability,andcollaborationofVPLEXAccessAnywhere
forbothdataandenterpriseapplicationswithVPLEX.
TheVPLEXwritesplittersupportslocalandRemoteReplicationusinganysupportedarray
type.TheRecoverPointVPLEXsplittersupportsvirtualizedenvironmentsandclustering
environments.TheseenvironmentsincludeVMwareHA,MicrosoftMSCS/Failover
clustering,OraclestretchedRAC,OracleOVMandAIXstretchedclusters.

TheRecoverPointAppliance(RPA) isthedataprotectioncontrollerforRecoverPoint.RPAnodes
utilizeprivateLANandsharedRPAvolumesforcommunicationsusingstandardTCPprotocol.No
FC/IPconvertersareneededtoreplicateacrosstheWAN.ThesetofRPAsateachcluster
constitutesanRPAcluster,whereeachclustercanincludebetweenoneandeightRPAs,asset
duringRecoverPointsysteminstallation.
Theclustersizemustbethesameatallclustersinaninstallation.Innormaloperation,allRPAsina
clusterareactiveallofthetime.Consequently,ifoneoftheRPAsinaclustergoesdown,the
RecoverPointsystemsupportsimmediateswitchoverofthefunctionsofthatboxtoanotherRPAin
thecluster.
Generation5RPAsperformhardwarestatusnotifications.Ifaharddriveorpowersupply
ontheRecoverPointappliancefails,ahardwareeventnotificationwillberaisedinthe
systemlogs.Ifconfigured,theeventwillalsocreateacallhomeevent,sendingasystem
requesttoEMCCustomerService.

Thenetworkconnectionconsistsofamanagementnetworkandareplicationnetwork.The
managementnetworkhasastaticIPaddressforeachapplianceandafloatingstaticIPaddressfor
eachcluster.Themanagementnetworkmanagestheappliancesaswellasaccesstothe
replicationsmanagementCLIandGUI.
ThereplicationnetworkconsistsofastaticIPaddressforeachappliance.Itcommunicatestothe
appliancesontheoppositeclusterandreplicatesdatabetweentheclusters.AnNTPserverensures
propertimesynchronizationwiththeoutsideworld.Itislocatedonlyontheprimarycluster,since
theapplianceshaveaninternalsynchronizationmethodtoensureallappliancesaresynchronized.
AnNTPserverisrecommendedbutnotrequiredandistypicallyconnectedthroughthe
managementnetwork.

group.consistencygroupsmaintainwriteorderbetweenthedatasets.Settingsandpoliciesfor
dataprotectionaredefinedforeachconsistencygroup.Examplesoftheseparametersare:

1.Theproductionhostwritesdatatotheproductionvolumes,butisfirstinterceptedbythesplitter.The
splittersendsthewritedatatotheRPA.
