Stress is part of modern life. But what can we do about it? Here are
eight DOs and DONTs for coping with stress from Dr Peter Kelly,
Director of the Stress Control Society.
DO find a hobby so you can switch off and forget about work.
DO take short breaks. They are often better than long holidays
with pressure before you go and problems when you are
back home.
DO keep down consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, and cola
drinks.
DO plan things in advance. Saying no now can stop stress levels
going up in the future.
DO work off stress with physical activity. Exercise can make
stress levels go down.
DO look after yourself eat when youre hungry, rest when
youre tired. Take time off if youre ill.
DONT bottle feelings up. Talk about about them, write about them.
DONT forget about relaxing. Use a technique like transcendental
meditation, or yoga, or listen to music or a relaxation
cassette.
