This lesson plan teaches 7th grade students about the formulas for finding the area and circumference of circles. Students will work in pairs to use the internet to find the radius of a planet and calculate the area and circumference. They will illustrate their results in an image. Students will use online resources and games to review the topic and take a short quiz to assess their understanding. The goals are for students to learn the difference between circumference and perimeter, know and use the correct formulas, and apply technology to solve problems and review concepts.

Standards: 1. Content Area: Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.(NYS Standards) 2. Technology:Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes; Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues; Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems; Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media(ISTE Standards)
Lesson Objectives: 1. Content Area: Students will be able to determine the difference between the circumference of a circle and its perimeter. Students will be able to define the formulas as well as their components and use these formulas in the correct context. 2. Technology: Students will be able to use technology to find information needed to solve area and circumference. Students will be able to use technology to review this subject at a later date as well.
Learning Activity: 1. Content Area: The students will begin class by defining the terms of both the area of a circle and its circumference. Using this information we will determine the formulas for area and circumference and the difference between the two. Students will be broken into pairs for this activity. Students will then use the internet to determine the radius or diameter of a chosen planet in our solar system. This information will be used when the students determine the circumference and area of the chosen planet. The students will then use an image editor to show their findings in a picture illuminating which planet they used and its radius and diameter. The students should also include the area and circumference of their planet somewhere in their drawing. 2. Technology: Students will utilize their computers to find the components of each formula and to find the radius or diameter of a specific planet. There will also be a link to an online calculator on my website the students should use if they lack an appropriate calculator. Students should be able to use their computers to access an image editor and construct a diagram using the information they obtained.
Provide Information: 1. Content Area: Students should know that the radius is the distance from the edge of the circle to its center, and is half the diameter. They should also know the diameter is the line passing through the center and connecting two points on the circumference. They should know the equation for circumference, C=2r, and is the distance around the circle. Also, they should know the formula for the area of a circle, A=r 2 , and that it is the number of square units inside the circle. 2. Technology: Students should be able to access this information through a variety of links on the resources page on my website.
Provide Practice: 1. Content Area: If students complete the previous activity in a timely matter then they should access my resources page and use the links under the title Area & Circumference of a Circle to play games and review activities. These games should help solidify the students understanding of the formulas and how to use them in a fun and interactive way. The students will need access to a calculator. 2. Technology: Students will be using online resources in order to better learn the definitions and gain a deeper understanding of the topic. The students will also need a calculator, if they do not have one they may use the one on my website.
Knowledge of Results: 1. Content Area: Students will complete a short 5 question quiz on edmodo during the last few minutes in class. This will illuminate to me who has learned the information and is comfortable with it. 2. Technology: Students will access my website online and go to the resources page where an online quiz will be. The students will use this along with a calculator provided on the resources page to completed to assignment in a timely fashion.
Review the Activity: 1. Content Area: Review what the students learned and have them ask any questions about the topic. 2. Technology: Use the diagrams made to illuminate the different components and formulas learned today.
Methods of Assessment: 1. Content Area: Students will show what they have learned using the short quiz. Students will also be graded on their willingness to participate, the attention level, and how well they showed their mastery of the topic. 2. Technology: Students are able to correctly use technology if they do not stray from the task, are able to use it as an educational aid, and it is easy for them to follow. Students should be able to access the games and review activities on my website leading to them gain a deeper understanding of the topic.
