The Justice Center Reorganizing Law Enforcement
WHAT THIS HANDOUT IS ABOUT: This handout is about abolishing police misconduct and corruption. WHY DO WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT THIS? Police misconduct and corruption occurs in many ways. It does not just effect the victims but it also effects everyones rights and safety. The real problems may not be so obvious, when you are not in the system. STRATEGIES: Make more people aware of that these police corruption and miscon- duct is a frequent occurrence, and require police officers to wear per- sonal surveillance systems while they are on duty. Also, improve train- ing and education for police officers for tough situations and extreme frustration. STRATEGY 1. Make People Aware: If more people know that police officers do not always follow the book, they will begin to educate themselves about their rights as a citizen and the laws that are in place. Make Public Service Announcements:
-Online
-On T.V.
-On the Radio
STRATEGY 2. Personal Surveillance Systems: This idea is already being implemented in several states due to the high number of complaints against police. In some states police offic- ers are required to wear a small camera or audio recorder attached to their uniform. This is a great way to make quick work of those brutali- ty or violated rights cases that people can sometimes falsely accuse officers of, and that can prove that they did, if that is the case.
STRATEGY 3: Improved Training and Education:
Handeling stressful situations: There are many cases where police officer looses their temper in situa- tions with people, which is understandable. However, when they pull their gun and innocent people, or people who are not threatening an- other person, or innocent animals die, that becomes a problem. More training needs to be done for officers when they are in frustrating situ- ations, and possibly test how they handle them. Determining life threatening situations: If police officers are going to violently enter peoples homes, in order to catch non-violent people, they should be trained on how to know when they are actually being threatened. Many police officers become trigger happy in those situations because they never know who they are going to walk into. But who wouldnt scared, if you are entering someones home who is a serial plant grower. Dealing with the mentally handicapped Police officers need to be taught and understand how to recognize and handle situations that involve people who are mentally handicapped. and people under the influence of drugs: This also goes for people on drugs. In either scenario, the person may not be able to act rationally, and could confuse even simple requests.
FINAL THOUGHTS There is much room for improvement in our system that was created for fighting crime. We must encourage people to speak up about these problems, have more priority in finding solutions to these problems, and implement ideas that help to prevent them as well.
