Sizing & Finished Measurements:

This pattern will show you how to create a
custom-t hat for any age from newborn to
adult. Sizing will be done based upon head
circumference using simple math.
Materials:
!Worsted Weight yarn, 2.5-4.5 oz
(Pictured: Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe)
! Size H Crochet Hook
!2 pieces Ribbon, 14 each (optional)
!Measuring tape
!Sharp Scissors
!Calculator
!Lighter (optional)
!Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Gauge is not important, as we will be adjusting
measurements throughout the project.
Level: Intermediate.
Special Stitches:
Loop Stitch (lp st), worked in the back loop only
for this pattern.
To make a loop insert hook in the next sc,
holding yarn around the index nger on your
yarn hand from back to front in a 2-inch loop.
Grab the left and right sides of loop with your
hook and draw both strands through stitch. You
now have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and
draw through all 3 loops on your hook. Loop
stitch made.
Note: Make sure all of the loops are close to the
same length so that your loops will look
uniform.
Abbreviations:
ch: chain, st: stitch, sc: single crochet, dc:
double crochet, sl st: slip stitch, lp st: loop
stitch, yo: yarn over

Crochet Cabbage Patch Inspired Hat

Before we begin you will need to do a little
bit of math to determine the size and t of
the hat. The math is key for a perfect t
every time. So grab a calculator and a pen!
Step 1: Determine the circumference of the persons
head (in inches). If it is unknown, consult a chart online
for average head circumferences by age.
Head Circumference:___________________
Step 2: Subtract 1 or 1.5 from the head circumference.
This will determine the circumference of the hat. Hats
stretch so you want it to t snug but not tight.
Hat Circumference: ____________________
Step 3: Determine the diameter of the crown using this
simple formula:
Hat circumference 3.14 (or pi) = Crown Diameter
Crown Diameter: ___________________
Step 4: Determine the length of the hat using this simple
formula:
(Hat circumference 10) x 4 = Hat Length
Hat Length:______________________
Keep these measurements handy! You will
need to check your measurements often as
you crochet.
Begin Crown
Round 1: Chain 4 (counts as a dc + 1 starting loop). Dc
11 times in 4th ch from hook. Sl st into top of ch 3 to
form a circle working in the round. (12 dc)
Increase Rounds
Complete these rounds until the crown of the
hat measures near the crown diameter you
calculated earlier in Step 3. Once you are as
near as possible to your diameter stop doing the
increase rounds and move on to the Regular
Rounds section on page 3.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as a dc here and throughout), dc
in same stitch as joining, 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st
into top of ch 2. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc in same stitch as joining, dc in next
stitch,*2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch*, repeat
around, sl st into top of ch 2. (36 dc)
Round 4: Ch 2, dc in same stitch as joining, dc in next
two stitches, *2 dc in next stitch, dc in next two stitches*,
repeat around, sl st into top of ch 2. (48 dc)
Round 5: Ch 2, dc in same stitch as joining, dc in next
three stitches, *2 dc in next stitch, dc in next three
stitches*, repeat around, sl st into top of ch 2. (60 dc)
Round 6: Ch 2, dc in same stitch as joining, dc in next
four stitches, * 2dc in next stitch, dc in next four stitches*,
repeat around, sl st into top of ch 2. (72 dc)
Note: If the crown diameter does not fit at the
end of any rounds do your final increase row
with half as many increases around.
For example, if the Crown Diameter after Round
4 is too short, and after Round 5 it is too long,
consider doing Round 5 with only 6 stitch
increases instead of 12 stitch increases. The
Round 5 pattern would then be *2 dc in next
stitch, dc in next 7*, repeat around. This causes
you to skip every other 2 dc increase around.
The same could be done for any other increase
round. Simply skip every other 2 dc increase in
the round, which will cause the round to only
increase by 6 stitches instead of 12.

Regular Rounds
Complete these rounds until
your hat is 1 or 1.25 away
from the Hat Length you
calculated in Step 4. Then
move on to the Looped
Rounds. Measure by folding
hat flat and measuring from
the top of the crown to the
bottom of your work.
All Rounds: Ch 2, dc in each stitch
around, sl st into top of ch 2.
Looped Rounds
Complete these rounds until
your hat measures the full
length you calculated in Step
4.
All Rounds: Ch 1, TURN. Sc in
rst stitch and the next several
stitches until you have worked roughly
1/4 of the way around. (Working in
both loops)
Then, working in the back loop
only, begin working 1 loop stitch in
each stitch around until you have
worked 1/2 of the way around.
Then, sc in both loops of the
remaining stitches for the last 1/4 of
the round. Sl st into top of rst sc.
Without turning, repeat these rounds
until your project measures the full hat
length from crown to the bottom
(usually 4-5 looped rounds in total)
Fasten project off. Weave in ends.

Pigtails/Ponytails (Photos above)
Step 1: Measure out yarn and stack neatly end to end.
!0-4 months 50 strands, 17 long each,
!5-9 months: 55 strands, 18 long each,
!10-18 months: 60 strands, 19 long each,
!Child: 65 strands, 20 long each,
!Teen & Adult: 70 strands, 21 long each
Step 2: Take one of the strands, wrap it around the
center of the pile and knot it tightly (A surgeon knot
works best.)
Step 3: Holding the strand you used to make the knot,
use your crochet hook to pull each half of the strand
through the top of the hat where you want to place each
tail (3a). Knot it securely inside the hat (3b), then use your
crochet hook to pull the remaining pieces of the strand
back outside the hat (to blend in with the rest of the tail).
Step 4: Cut off pieces of string to bunch the ponytails.
Make sure strings are long enough that after they are
knotted they can hang down to blend in with the rest of
the tail. Use your ngers to comb the tail out neatly (4a).
With hat sitting upright, line up string where you want it
to bunch, tie a tight knot and slip the knot to the back of
the tail (4b). Then blend the rest of the strand within the
tail. Repeat for as many times you want to bunch the tails.
Step 5: Trim all of the uneven ends at the bottom of the
tail with a very sharp pair of scissors.
Step 6: Add bows if you wish using two 14 pieces of
ribbon. Grosgrain ribbon works well. Be sure to trim and
then fuse the cut ends with a lighter to prevent fraying.
