RUQYAH
AND
NUSHRAH
RUQYAH IS HALAL (PERMISSIBLE) AND
NUSHRAH IS HARAM (PROHIBITED)

By Dr. Abu Marya Sayeeduddin
There is a difference between Ruqyah and Nushrah. Ruqyah is Halal
but Nushrah is Haram. Allah s last prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said
people can do Ruqyah. According to Sahih Abu Dawood, prophet
Muhammad (S.A.W.) said Nushrah (exorcising of Jinn ,spirit etc) is a
satanic act.
Ruqyah This is a permissible act. According to Bukhari and Muslim
it is mentioned that a companion of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W)
recited surah Fatiha on the chief of a tribe who was stung by a
scorpion, to cure him. This is called Ruqyah. To recite surah Alfalaq
and Surah Naas on a person affected by eyeing or by magic and spell
is called Ruqyah. To recite dua of prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.)
keeping hand on that part of the body which is paining is called
Ruqyah. These are permissible acts in Islam.

Nushrah This is exorcism of Jinn and spirit. According to Sahih Abu
Dawood, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said that Nushrah is a Satanic
act. Had there been a fact of possession of Jinn and spirit, it would
have been an act of reward and a good job of exorcising, not a
Satanic act. Our beloved prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) did know the
fact that the possession has no existence which is why he called
exorcism as a Satanic act.

Some old Islamic Scholars, (whom I respect very much) who held the
aqeedah of possession, were not ready to accept this hadeeth in
straight forward manner because this hadeeth goes against the
aqeedah of possession and exorcism. So these Ulemas began to do
Taweel. They began to say that Nushrah is of two types (1) to do
Nushrah with Quranic Ayat is Halal. (2) To do Nushrah with Shrikya
words is Haram. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) never classified
Nushrah. He clearly said that Nushrah is a Satanic act. But people
who held the aqeedah of possession, declared this Satanic act to be
halal one. Like the persons fond of Biddah divided Biddah into two
types, Biddah-e-Hasna and Biddah-e-Sayeeah, though every Biddah
undoubtedly leads to hellfire.
