This paper contains FIVE (5) Questions. Candidates are requested to answer ANY FOUR (4) Questions.

Question 1 (a) (b) (c) State the first and second moment of area theorems. [6 marks] Derive the equation governing the second moment of area. [7 marks] Consider a simply supporting beam 8m long, carrying three point loads 20kN in magnitude, at distances of 2m, 4m and 6m respectively from the left hand support. The beam has a cross section of 150mm x 300mm, and the modulus of elasticity of the beam is 15 GN/m2. Determine the maximum deflection and maximum bending stress. [12 marks]

Question 2 (a) Derive the equation governing the torque applied to a thick hollow circular shaft, or interior radiu s a 1 and exterior radius a 2. [6 marks] Define the term Polar Second Moment of area of a circular shaft. Derive the Polar Second Moment of Area for the beam described in part (a). [6 marks] A propeller shaft in a ship is 350mm in diameter. The allowable working stress in shear is 50MN/m 2, and the allowable angle of twist is 1 degree in 15 diameters of length. If the shear modulus is 85GN/m2, determine the maximum torque the shaft can transmit. [13 marks]

Question 4 (a) With the help of sketches, give two examples of determinate and indeterminate structures. [8 marks] A cantilever beam of length L m, carries a uniformly distributed load of w per meter run. It is propped at its free end, with a vertical load P. Explain how you would apply the theory of deflection of beams, to calculate the vertical load P. [9 marks] Explain how the method of slope deflection can be used to solve unknowns for indeterminate structures. [8 marks]

Question 5 (a) A thin cylindrical vessel containing liquid under pressure is subjected to two types of stresses. Describe, with the help of sketches, and derive the relationship between these two types of stresses. [10 marks] Show that the volumetric strain of a thin shell can be given by the following equation:

(b)

?V/V
where

= P r /Et ( 5/2 2? )
?V: V: P: R: t: ?: change in volume original volume internal pressure mean radius thickness of vessel Poissons Ratio. [15 marks]
