How Do We Define Leadership?

Leadership Reflection Read the following selection and answer the questions below.
A leader is not necessarily a person who holds some formal position of leadership or who is perceived as a leader by others. Rather, a leader is one who is able to affect positive change for the betterment of others, the community, and society. All people, in other words, are potential leaders. Moreover, the process of leadership cannot be described simply in terms of the behavior of an individual; rather leadership involves collaborative relationships that lead to collective action grounded in the shared values of people who work together to elevate an organization, cause, or community. Adapted from the Higher Education Research Institute. 1) Do you agree with this definition of leadership?

2) How else might you define leadership?

3) Can you think of examples of people in society that fit this definition?

4) Can you give an example of a time where you demonstrated leadership?

Be Smart!
SMART goals help us make goals that are more easily achievable by outline specific requirements for success.!!

S M A R T

Your goals should be SPECIFIC. Include dates, resources, and dollar amounts you'll need to accomplish them. They should be MEASUREABLE by the date, the amount (increase %), or another appropriate unit. Your goals should be ATTAINABLE for your situation. You might even be able to complete part of your goal right now. If your goals are REALISTIC and RELEVANT to your life, they'll be easier to achieve. You'll need a specific TIMELINE to accomplish your goals. Prioritize and create a strategy.

Example: I will increase my GPA by .3 points by the end of the semester by studying at least 2 more hours a week, hiring a tutor, and visiting my teacher's office hours.

You have come a long way in your leadership development. But leadership is a continual process. You continue to learn new skills and new things about yourself every day. As you go out into your life, your classes, your jobs, and your organization, you will face many decisions, you may make mistakes along the way, and you will grow considerably. What will keep you grounded are your values and what keeps you going is your vision.
